If graphing, scale draw- ing and simple equations are your desire, General Mathematics is the course of in- terest to you. A different approach to the study of math is found in Algebra which takes up sined numbers, formulas and factoring. Juniors eligible for membership must have a Bn or better average for the first five semesters .and a citizenship grade not below a UC. During the seventh semester an addi- tional ten per cent of the seniors who are eligible may become members. Since the or- ganization is limited to five per cent of the junior class and fifteen per cent of the senior class, the entire faculty judges each student as to their merits. Final screening for mem- bership is done by a committee of teachers appointed by the principal. Each spring new members are initiated into the organization at a special convocation con- ducted by their sponsor, Miss Lillian Sayers. 3 U Xlilit SCl!QE.XlifSE2+ LlABt5fiSHlF SIHUCI TWO-YEAR MEMBERSvFront: Miss Sayers. row: Nancy Hokanson, Judy Stephens, Sandy Third row: Phil Brockington, Ron Reglein Wy'coff. The Student Council is constantly on the lookout for new ideas that will result in an even better rep- resentation of the interests of the student body. Meeting every two weeks, discussions on matters concerning the establishment of a car club to cope with the increasing number of student drivers, pro- viding a penalty for disorderly lockers, replacing detentions as a result of the new noontime schedule, establishing spring elections of student council of- ficers and having greater student council representa- tion were challenges worked out for the over-all benefit of the students. A plan by which schools have an opportunity to visit each other to compare their systems of govern- ment and exchange ideas has been a highlight in the past few years. Lectures, Tours, Projects Inform Science Clu Fellow germs and asiatic flu viruses of the Science Club and Mr. Henry Looft, Mr. Cyral Turner, Mr. Elwood Mull, and Mr. Edwin Wiens, sponsors, held the i'Bacteria Bop with the proceeds from the dance going toward the completion of the greenhouse project. The refined members toured the Standard Oil Refinery. seeing a movie of blends and compressions of gases and oils and exploring research laboratories. Paving the way forward into the '57-758 school year, Don Wycoff, president, Carol Anderson, vice president, Phyllis Hyde, secretaryg Len Jersey, treasurer, and Denny Dille, student council representative carried out the task successfully. HElect-Ron shocked the student body as it elected Ron Wycoff as president of the Student Council over Denny Dille. The social activities of the year were kicked off with the Fall Fiesta held in the new multi-purpose room. A tribute to the fall season was the over-all theme with scarecrows and cobs of corn. The hall rocked with the music of the Esquires. Those blues were never bluer as the Basin Street Bunch blew to the tune of first place in Opportunity Night. C.H.S.'s man with a horn, Dan Could, took second place. The gone cats of the Charleston,' kicked their heels high and received honorable mention. A long anticipated event finally arrived as many long, tedious, fun-filled, hours were spent in preparation for the 'Senior Playf, We learned, too, the meaning of a udeadlinel' as those who worked on HScoop and the year- book experienced the last minute rush to meet those deadlines. ln May, the Prom, followed by Senior Day, Baccalau- reate and Commencement brought down the curtain on another Senior Class. Now we, who have worked together during these years, go our separate ways into the future. We thank lVlrs. Janet Davis, Mrs. Mary Dold, lVlr. What a hectic year was ahead but we accepted the challenges and handled them successfully. Citizens of Chesterton, here come the Juniors. To lead these ambitious juniors,'Rudy Vanlzoon, presidentg John Carpenter, vice president, Karen Taylor, secretary, Sue Drozda, treasurerg JoAnn Wallace. student council representative, were chosen. The one big project for the officers was the Prom and how it was going to be financed. Selling maga- zine subscriptions and a sock hop were big money makers. The audience rolled in their seats as '6Minerva's Merry Maidsi' won first place in Opportunity Night. The fair maiden of the island, Patty Leigh, and her troup took second place for the juniors. The merry magician, Marcia Oddi, also represented her class. Along in May that long anticipated day came as the dolled-up girls and their escorts attended the Prom. Many happy, fun-filled hours of preparation and decorating were spent in having a prom that lived up to past tradition. All too soon, we realized that this wonderful. eventful year was now history. The staff wishes to thank the photographers who flashed the pictures captur- ing the events of the yearg the sponsors, Mr. R alph Shields and Mr. Cyral Tur- ner, without whose OK would have made it impos- sible to put this book to- getherg the teachers who so willingly cooperated when we interrupted their classes: and last but not least the students who made up this yearbook and without whom th e re would be no yearbook. With all of the ups and downs, we all agree that it was a wonderful experience putting this book together and hope you enjoyed it as much as we did assembling it.
