Al Gaston: Mah friends, and I know you all are mah friends. DEMOCRATIC No national presidential cam- paign between the democrats and republicans could have had more unflinching spirit or more practical motives than the 1955- 56 Chesterton High School elec- tion for president and vice presi- dent of the Student Council. Bosom buddies, Bruce Bassett and Ben l-lovvery were chosen to oppose each other in the race for the presidency. With a flurry of posters, speeches, and parades, these boys opened the most dy- namic and vvell-balanced cam- paign in CHS history. The campaign banners of Al Gaston and Jerry Goldstine, jun- ior candidates for vice president, were soon flying full mast. Democracy prevailed in every move of the campaign. Political platforms of the four candidates were presented to the student voters. They were urged to think about the candidates' personality, his ideas, and his industry and dependability. And then on October 4, en- lightened citizens of CHS cast their ballots. After days of pains- taking work and keen competi- tion, the inevitable winners and losers were selected. Bruce, the new president, and Al, the new vice president, with their worthy and admirable op- ponents, Ben and Jerry, resumed their former lives. DEALS FLOURISH l Bruce Bassett: Please! Please! Vote for me Jerry Goldstine: Now it sezs here. The boys have learned a valuable lesson-how to win and how to lose-and the students have learned with them. They carried out the code of sportsmanship to the hilt, and the Singing Sands ot 1956 would like to offer them its sincere con- gratulations. ive-----w-m......, Nm www-.,i ef 'Y' ,,,,..Mwsvw-vm.-H 'dusHV 'f M'W-.x MUN 'fi- Swimming MJ ft 1' HST' has 'fx X-1 Mm. 'Ff2ff'BwE, SENIOR CLASS HISTORY lt all started in 1952 when the old hands from Chesterton Junior High and the new re- cruits from St. Pat's began the adventurous task of making themselves into a unified, capable class. In their initial election they chose Sandy Young for president, Dick Hokanson, vice presi- dent, Carol Groff, secretary, Warren Ormiston, treasurer, and John Lascoe, Student Council Rep- resentative. Opportunity Night was their first chance to work as a team and they came out in first place with The Man I Love and Melancholy Baby. Then came the exciting Freshman-Sopho- more Reception making them full-fledged stu- dents of CHS. ln May the freshman class party was held in the gym. Crepe paper streamers spelled out Class of '56. They iust laughed. It was a long way off. lg N' 'sr ' : Bef ' . Each day under the leadership of John Lascoe, president, Carol Groff, vice president, Kathleen Earley, secretary, Warren Ormiston, treasurer, and Karen Wallin, student council representative, they came closer to their goal of becoming a true class. As hosts of the Freshman-Sophomore Reception they had that experienced feeling of knowing the ropes. A class picnic and dance at Goodfellow Camp terminated their second year of learning and laughing. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Popcorn, fresh popcorn. Would you like to buy a magazine? Now these are the best Christ- mas trees in town. Whenever people saw a mem- ber of the iunior class, they ducked for he was sure to be selling something. T955 was packed full of projects to raise money for the New Year's Eve Dance and the Prom. On May 6, after months of vigorous planning, hard work, and determina- tion to make it a hit, Younger Than Springtime their first prom, became a reality. The brains be- hin,d the brawn this year were President John Lascoe, Vice President Ben Howery, Secretary Pat Slont, Treasurer Warren Ormiston, and Student Council Representative Karen Wallin. The class chose Judy Bishop and Bruce Bassett as candi- dates for Vice President of the Student Council with Judy winning in a close race. l fn , l jf' - v .- ..555-wg:::-.-.,.-:-:-:fc-.-:+LN-9:-. With this in mind the seniors wasted no time in making their last year one never to be forgotten. For the third consecutive time, John Lascoe was elected class president. Mark Holmberg became vice presi- dent, Sandy Young, secretary, Bill Jeffrey, treas- urer, and Ben Howery, student council repre- sentative. The Fall Fiesta was held in St. Pat's gym. The Hungrey Five a German Band, won first prize for comedy in Opportunity Night. After a dynamic campaign opposing Ben Howery, Bruce Bassett emerged as President of the Student Body. The Senior Play, working on the annual, and the prom brought this their final year to a fleeting unbelievable close. Now after four years of making history for the Maroon and Gold, they leave their Alma Mater. With fighting hearts and sturdy minds they advance into the hazy, chal- lenging future, always and forever a compliment to CHS. 3l -Ven.. it F, PRiscil.LA ANN BAC-BY Prill l'm not denying that girls are dumb. Chesterton's mighty harriers for the fifth straight year distinguished them- selves among top teams in the State of Indiana. Showing exceptional depth for a small school. The Trojans finished 8th in their quest, along with IAO other schools for a state championship. The seven teams that bested the bare-foot boys from Chesterton have larger enrollments from which to draw athletes, yet they can't boast of the con- sistently superior showing the runners from the small school of Chesterton have displayed annually. Coach Raymond Edman's harriers sped through the season with seven wins and two losses both to the state runnerup, Hobart. During big meets they placed first in the closed division of the Shortridge Invitational, second in the Marion Invitational, fourth at the Hobart Invitational and second at the Hobart Sectional. Veteran runner, Dave Coombs, earned the school, the team, and himself state- wide recognition with his sterling performances. Coombs garnered first position in every big meet except the state finals where he finished a close second. His best time this year was 9:37.7 at the Hobart Invitational. Chesterton will lose Warren Ormiston, four year letter-winner in cross country, Bob Wozniak, Bill Jeffery, and Coombs due to graduation. Others responsible for the team's success were Ed Tilden, Gerry Humphrey, Bob Lowther, Lenny Jersey, Pete Coombs, Roy Ormiston, Morris Medley, Jim Medley, and Len Cooper. 1955 X-COUNTRY RECORD Griffith ,, Hobart C , Crown Point Froebel , CHS 2nd-Marion Invitational Michigan City CHS 4th-Hobart Invitational CHS, a,,,a,,,a , ,a,,,a,a,, 24 CHS aaaaaa, 7 ,35 CHS W ,, 7, ,,a,a, or 720 CHS ,a,,,,,,,, 7, C, a,a,, , 17 CHS ,a,o,,a,,,,,,,a, , ,,,.,a, 25 CHS, H a,,,.,o,.,.,,.o.. ,33 CHS, . ,,..,aa,.. ., 721 Crown Point 63 Wanatah 94 Hobart ,aw,, ,,oo, Valpo ,,,,a CHS ist-Closed Division Sltortridge Invitational CHS H ,, ,,,,,24 Laporte . ,,a, Culver Military 61 CHS 2nd-Sectional CHS 8th-State Finals BEST OF THE BAREFOOT Wfif at ,Q 'I I DAVE COOMBS .JA Q X A V .F I 5, .5 . , QQ-T 'MQnfi.1L Dave Coombs bests Dale Lubs of Laporte at the Hobart Invita- tionals. Secretly Chesterton's 1955 baseball team claimed the County Championship, officially we retained the title, but finished in a tie for the lead with Wheeler. During the season the Trojans soundly trounced the co-holder 7-2. This lopsided decision was the basis of their boast. Experienced senior letter winners who led the team were: Bruce Bassett, catcher, Don Chaplin, outfielder, Al Jensen, pitcher, and Howard Kremke, first baseman. These boys and the rest of the team were recipients of gold baseballs signifying their top position in the county. , E' S fi SE. ': 'E .,., Y ' ' - amy. ffl' .twine- fx 5 X -1.2:-: X' 'f f 4. Among the proiects undertaken this year by the council were the choosing of a school pep song and a school loyalty song. Supervision and use of the intercom was turned over to the student body. Working with a student committee the student council completely revised the Student Guide Book, making it more in- teresting and up-to-date. The group successfully sponsored the New Year's Eve Dance. Intramurals were smoothly carried out with tournaments climaxing the boys' and girls' divisions. Dancing and debating were introduced for the first time to promote noon-time recreation. The duration of the campaign for student council offices was one of the constitutional changes affected. Regular locker inspections were made by council members through the year. They also promoted a drive to keep the auditorium clean at lunch time, decorated the school for Christmas, helped select paid convocations, and promoted a success- ful clothing drive. ... According to the National rules, it is recommended that the member- ship be limited to 15 per cent of the Seniors and 5 per cent of the Juniors. This year fifteen seniors and six iuniors met the requirements. Before being considered, seniors must have a B semester average for their first seven semesters. Juniors bust have a B semester average for their first five semesters. After passing this, each senior high faculty member will rate them on character, leadership, and service. A total of 20 points may be gained in the following manner. Each student may obtain four points for superior scholarship. These points are automatically doubled. Of 100 per cent, scholarship is 40 per cent, the remaining 60 per cent is based on the following qualities: leadership, service, and character. Four points for each quality and a sum of l2 points is the highest possible. This total combined with the points from scholarship equal the above possible 20. They braved a bumpy five-hour ride to Indianapolis to follow the speedy cross-coun- try runners to the State Finals. For the second consecutive year, Chester- ton was a two-way victor at the County Tourney, winning both the tournament and the cheering awards. Resplendent in maroon and gold arm bands and bow ties, the T60 Queens Court Trojan Boosters, among other county schools, monopolized the attention ot the spectators with their originality, volume, and loyalty.
