'- H R r v THE DUNELAND ECI-I0 Published by the Senior Class ol I93I Westchester Township l-ligh School Chesterton, Indiana Qin 4,1 Page 2 DEDICATION E, 'FIIE VLASS OF 15131, dedicate this work to our beloved principal, whose efforts on our behalf will ever linger with us we think of his fairness and faithfulness through our high school days. l, am the Annual of 15131. l am the result of the best efforts of those who made me and whose inspiration 1 am. Progress, ever as a torch held on high, is my theme, chosen to remind you of our principal 's long period of service-over twenty-five years in C. H. S.- a, silver anniversary, which honors me most highly, and is a fitting theme to illustrate the finest and highest peak of effort and esteem an instructor can reach. V I, myself, am not to be compared with this man. It is my THEME that commemorates the way in which he has achieved. My theme also would point out progress and change in the school itself. Once long, long ago, this region was represented by a barren waste of wooded and sandy mother earth. Vast waves beat upon a crisp sandy beach. A red sun gleamed upon rugged waters-came inhabitants who built wigwams and cabins. They also built schools and churches. More and more came, the spirit of progress dominant among them. We are taught by the examples of those men. Our friend and teacher, Mr. Goldsborough, has been such a man. Mr. Goldsborough has piloted us skillfully .through our high school years. lt is also largely through his leadership that C. H. S. is now what it is. As you read the pages of this book, carry my thought in your mind. l am your Annual of 1931. r L G I 1 i F. M. GULDSBOROUGH Princ-ipnl Page 3 i -, Ai N 1 X 9 , Atil, . She tells us that juniors like to comb seniors, hair and that someone said that someone told him that Mary Eileen giggles very easily. Mrs. Eraser hasn't much time because she has to hurry on to the next house, so we'll let her speak for herself-Mrs. Eraser. 'LHello, did you hear that Thomas Skibbie received a letter for service in Mildew College? And do you know that Louis Gland 's idea of a human parasite is a mother-in-law? Er-How long do you think it is since the seniors started to serve fish on Friday? I wonder how Roy Brooks got his stiff neckf, Roy Holm was electrocuted in Physics class the other day, and his hair has stood on end ever since. Mr. Jones and Mr. Harvey and Miss Morgan have the flu .... Mr. Vedell misses a half day, and Mr. LeRoy is sick and so is Miss Friedrich. To top it all off .... Miss Zehner has appendicitis. lt looks as if the pupils aren't the only ones who like to play hookey. llelmah Borg done blew himself and got a new green comb .... you say it might be his sistah Heaven sakes no-go see-hels done got a green sweatah to match. UH HUI-Il' 'AFIREV' yells a junior and at this moment a courageous freshie, armed with a fork, dismounts his gallant rocking horse, Pyramid,H and bravely steps forth amidst the crowd. Standing on an aged desk he cries-HI Wish I was a little fith-l'd thwim and thwim and thwim! .... f'Wl'1oool', scorned the Wise old owl in the science hall. Down with him! And they rode him around the assembly on a kiddie car. f'See you in jail in cell 21 old boy .... so long .... and don 't forget-we have dinner in cell 35,,' yelled a lusty junior, the villain of '32, I wonder if they have the gate pad- locked yet? 'Twas a gorgeous day .... the little buttercups and sweet dandelions wafted a lovely fra- grance through the air .... He looked into her lovely eyes-and gazed on her golden hair- How cruel she was as her eyes met his .... he pleaded and beseeched, but all in vain .... The sun gleamed remorsefully down on that cold heart while she took her pencil and wrote him out a detention slip. Oh, by the way-what in the world has happened to Mrs. Eraser?-l didn't see her go . . . . Oh! . . . . there she sails . . . . deary me, right out of the window and-and-and down the chimney .... how awful .... well, anyway, that's the end of her, thank goodness. He was, however, like tl1at when he came out from under the ether jag,l' too. ln other words, it was quite natural. But to get down to business, Herbert was o11ly having his nose set after Olle of l1is big fights and had a PCEISOII for being his usual carefree and unusual self, for he had won that fight and it had brougl1t big opportunities to hin1. Mrs. Mensalear went on to tell me another unusual case whicl1 had come under her' notice since she l1ad been head nurse. She said she had had another patient by the name of Miss Adeline Peterson. For three days, Miss Peterson was one of her assistants, but it seems she was selected to be a helper to the chief s11rgeo11 i11 an intricate a11d delicate operation upon the cerebellum phelicknosmism on a patient from the Institute for the Mentally lnfirm. Mr. Holm married the former Miss Wya Wellcumm, the former chairman of the Cum ln Home and Garden Institution. One of the best woman lawyers in the United States now has the honor of being the first woman Speaker of the House of Representatives, introducing Speaker Kemil. There has been much controversy about the wisdom of this change, but so far, there has been no drastic action taken, for the simple art of conversation and wit. She is one. Needless to say, she has ardent Ruth Lundberg has become, we reason that Miss Kemil has shown her ability in the capable of leading a political movement or misleading supporters in the Class of '31. are convinced, one of the country ls best advisers and consultants in the commercial line. Miss Lundberg did 11ot stop at high school teaching but is now teaching future teachers how to teach. She is a mighty good teacher. In fact, a Walloping good teacher. Our former classmate is now teaching at Terre Haute, Ind., as head of the commercial department at Teachers' Normal. Faith Schabes is head of the home economics department at Northwestern University and also one of the country's best authorities on home economics, especially since the ad- vent of the policy of compulsory study of the home and its problems. This course requires every girl, taking the home economics course, to study the peculiarities of husbands, how to operate a budget, etc., or, in other words, manage a home. In her spare time Miss Schabes is one of the regular pianists for radio station WCHI, Chicago. Clarice Marquart-Assistant editor of the New York Gossiperf' Miss Marquart occupies a unique position, in that she is free to travel anywhere to get material for her writings and consequently her articles for this paper are of many different varieties. For instance, one day Miss Marquart may write a beautiful poem, and the very next day some important message for the common good of the people about geology. In her spare time, for a person's character is judged by the way they spend their spare time, she composes songs. You may judge from the preceding sentences the state of her finances. A horticulturist-Mr. Robert Peterson, Private. Have you ever seen that name on a door? It is to be seen in any of three large cities in northern Indiana. Mr. Peterson has thirty acres under glass and with big florist shops in each large city, it is likely that his returns are big-in fact-very big. Of course, thirty acres is certainly not all in flowers. He also deals in fresh vegetables. This business Comprises his Chief industry in winter months. Frequently, all three offices are vacant, with MF- Peterson nearly always personally supervising operations on his huge farm near Porter. We also have a basketball coach in the person of Mr. Reginald Allison Mabin. Mr. Mabin is coach at Wayside Sticks, Colorado. He has turned out to be a very capable coach and the school is proud of the honor Mr. Mabin has bestowed upon them by training their boys. As you know, Mr. Mabin received his training at a vcry early and delicate age. He was the originator of the famous loop-the-loop glide, a device by which the player, by means of numerous cart-wheels goes down the floor taster than the opponents and when the opponents try to guard the victim they are so dizzy that it is impossible to guard him. The victim then lets the ball fly, and how, in his intoxicated condition he hits the basket, is one of the mysteries to be solved by the next Sherlock Holmes. Aviator par excellence-Mr. Martin Rintz-expert on racing aeroplanes, and most ex- cellent pilot of same. Marty has participated in several Pulititzler races of international fame, having brought to the United States the Pulititzler trophy for three consecutive years. He is now contemplating a special Riutz Super Flying Engine, designed for a speed of six hundred miles per hour. When Marty gets on solid soil again and rides in an automobile at say about fifty miles on hour, he7ll feel like heis going backwards. Everette Witte-the most expert metallurgist of all times now employed by Dartmouth College and Northwestern University, neither school wishing to give up his services entirely as his knowledge of metals is most uncanny and remarkable. Viola Riley-Hailed as the greatest singer since Galli Curci. She is now in civic opera. Miss Riley has practiced under such great instructors as Gay Paree and Parley La Voo. She takes the leading part in that huge success Aida with Morton Downey, Jr., playing opposite her. It has been a feature at the Schletzenhower playhouses for six months now, and is showing no signs of decreasing in favor. A mathematical genius recently Went insane trying to figure the number of vibrations in Miss Riley's throat while hitting her highest note. Eternal Music Teacher-Miss Lelah Simison, the former Lelah Simison of trombone fame in C. H. S., is the music teacher at Indiana University. Because of natural ability as a musician, a two-year preparation was all she needed to gain this honorable position. She is the composer of the new Dutch-Serbian song, HShellackda Voo. The words are by one of her pupils, Varcelona Roomania. She was discovered, She took her screen test five weeks later. Talent and beauty WILL out. She is now reported engaged to the Finnish actor, Oozie Voo. Musician-none other-there is no other. Miss Gladys Wise is the clarinet player at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. In her spare time she instructs music at the Lewis Institute in Chicago. She once played under Rubinoff, the famous Russian orchestra leader. lncidentally, I once worked under Rubinotf myself, until Mr. Rubinoif decided to drive his ow11 car, Miss Wise is also the inventor of the Saxonet, a combination of the saxophone and clarinet. There was so much adverse criticism of the saxophone she thought she would combine the clarinet with it, to make it a little milder. lt doesn't sound much Worse. They boast that twenty graduates of their school have attained fame by either winning dancing marathons or dancing the rock road to fame and fortune be- fore the footlights or through Hollywood's smooth, but precipitous, byways. A well known graduate of their school is the Gilda Gray of 1951-Hortence Silver. Oho! A radio announcer-Miss Jeanette Stephens has had the luck of having attained success in her own old. home town. Junior-Senior Hunt Un September 251, the big game of hide-and-seek Legan. At one-thirty all of the seniors met at Ella Straleskey's home. They then packed into six cars driven by Virgil Hokanson, Rpy Holm, Margaret Sam- uelson, Everette XVitte, Douglas Anderson, and Adeline Peterson, At two-iifteen the seniors had arrived at their hiding place. It was in Dunes Park by an old house in the woods. There also was a clearing near the house 'which was owned by Virgil Hokanson's parents. A car went back for Mr. and Mrs. Harvey, our ehaperones, and the hunt was on, The seniors had a good time playing catch, horseshoe, baseball, and football. Some of the seniors also walked to the beach, The hours passed one by oneg the sun went down and a tire was built. The seniors gathered around the tire to keep warm. At seven-thirty the lights of a Ford flashed in the da1'k. Mr, Harvey quickly put out the tire and all of the seniors made a quick scramble to hide behind the cars. The Ford flashed its lights on our cars and immediately went as fast as it could down the road. One car followed it and to our great relief, we found out that it was not the juniors after all! It was only a few minutes to eight, so the seniors discussed chieiiy where tl1ey were going-home. movies, or what? Everyone dressed ill beautiful, gay-colored Italian costumes. The party began with a grand march, Many games were played, and at nine ok-lock the seniors were given Italian money to be spent at the booths and side shows. Fortunes were told, laughter came from the tent where the fat woman was housed. Candy, peanuts, and confetti were among the numer- ous luxuries to be purchased. The wheel of fortune hummed merrily throughout the evening. At ten o'clock the juniors and seniors filed into the beautifully decorated lunchroom and enjoyed a real Italian lunch.
