During football season, the band works very hard to put on pre-game and half-time shows for the fans. In December, they perform at the annual Christmas Concert as well as Tri-City in March and the Spring Concert in May. They also perform pep-band music at every home basketball game and march in several parades. The band has several fund raisers which include cheese, sausage and fruit. This year the band was honored by being chosen out of 88 bands to travel to Champaign. II. and perform during the State Girls’ Basketball tournament. SENIOR BAND MEMBERS Front row Troy Clendenin. The cheerleaders started working two weeks before camp in August. They brought back several ribbons and the Varsity won a spirit stick. One of the highlights of their football season was the alumni-cheerleaders cheering with them, second quarter of the Homecoming game. They also did loyalty and rode in a truck in the Homecoming Parade. The cheerleaders also had one little addition to their squad, a mascot cheered with the Varsity cheerleaders in home games and pep sessions. 43 VARSITY FOOTBALL (l to R) 1st row: Mike Phoenix. The Jackets did well considering they played in a conference that put three teams into post season play. This year's team was comprised of fourteen Seniors, fourteen Juniors and one Sophomore. Senior Curt Clendenin was behind the wheel of the offense and completed a total of 112 passes to his receivers. The top four of his receivers included Dan Hecht who caught a total of 31 passes. Bob Misuraca who pulled in 16, Mark Fleming who caught 18 and Troy Clendenin who brought down 14 passes. The backs were also moving the ball up the field with Brian Thomas and Rob Hittmeier who gained 329 and 30 yards respectively- While the offense was busy gaining yards for the Jackets the defense was continually trying to drive back the opponents. Leading the defense in tackles was Dan Hecht who had a total of 36 solo tackles. Close behind was Senior Tim Atchison with 35 solo tackles. Patrolling the backfield of the defense was Bob Misuraca playing conerback who snatched a total of 3 interceptions to stop key offensive drives. Curt Clendenin received many honors this year. He was selected to the All South football team and he also set new school records in passing with 1651 yards and with 16 touchdown passes. His career record for his three Varsity years also set new school records with 270 complete passes out of 529 attempts for a total of 3875 yards. Thirty-seven of his completions were touchdowns. To add to all of these honors Curt was rightfully named to the SWE All-Conference team as second team quarterback. Other Chester players named to the All-Conference teams were Dan Hecht who made the first team as tight end and Tim Atchison who made the second team as a offensive guard. Though their record may not show it, the Jackets deserve high praise for all their hard work and determination that they put into this season. Coach Hittmeier and Asst. Coach Sid Allen The Sophomore team, who was coached by Sid Allen, suprised many of their opponents this season as they finished 4-4 overall and 4-3 in conference. They played in some close, exciting games including a 22-14 overtime win over Nashville. Jamey Garner and Bobby Roberts teamed up to score many touchdowns on long bombs. Scott Lochhead led a balanced running attack, and Robert Colvis led the defensive attack of the Sophomores. The Sophomores should be able to step in and help out the Varsity next year. This years Freshman team, who was coached by Mike Spradling. finished 0-7. Although they didn't win a game they showed signs of a promising future. Darrel Hennrich led the team in rushing this year. Hopefully the Freshman will benefit from the weight program this summer and have a productive season next year. 49 VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Front Row Jo Andrews. Dawn Thielemann. Lee Ann Bridges. The two seniors led the team in close games and always showed enthusiasm in loss. The two seniors will be missed. The Lady Yellow jacket will be returning a lot of underclassmen for next years team. One of the returners is Laura Wittenbrink. Laura was the leading rebounder for the Lady Yellowjackets and has been a 3 year starter. Another returner is Ginger Yu. Ginger has gained a lot of valuable playing time this year and last year. Melissa Reiman played an important role this year. They finished 5th in the Conference and second in the regional. Chester had Conference wins over Nashville. Anna-Jonesboro, and Sparta giving the Jackets their most victories in Conference play since the 1979-80 season. In the regional tournament the Jackets played fine ball defeating Trico for the third time and beating a tough Coulterville team that had embarrassed the Jackets earlier. Chester lost to a State favored Pinckneyville basketball team in the final game. Every player on the team contributed in some way this year. Senior Mark Fleming played a point guard and was an important key to the team. He led the team with 89 assists. Senior Dean Rucker was a reserve that played well. Dean played a good ball during the regional tournament coming in at key times during the Coulterville and Pinkneyville games. Senior Chris Colvis played well all season as the Center for the Yellow Jackets. He averaged 12.1 rebounds a game and set a school record of 626 career rebounds. He also played good defense this year leading the team with 33 blocked shots and 325 ebounds. Junior guard Len Severs teas among the areas top scorers for most of the year averaging 15.7 points per game. He also led the Jackets with 39 steals. Another Junior that started all year was Joe Friess. Joe has a good shooting form and should be able to score plenty of points next year. Junior Kent Brookman was the team's sixth man. He played well all season coming on strong during the second half of the year. Two other Juniors. Brian Snider and Wade Tudor, didn't get much playing time because of injuries, but. if healed, should see plenty of playing time next year. Sophomoes. Kirk Brewer and Kevin Cartwright, who played J.V. all season, are expected to contribute a great deal to the team next year. The Jackets were pleased, but not satisfied with their season. They hope to keep building and improving in the years to come. L to R (fr) Dean Rucker. Kevin Cartwright. Kent Brookman. Len Severs. Mike Abernathy. Wade Tudor. Brett Bollman. The Student Council is the students' governing body which consists of 5 officers. 4 representatives from each class and 6 liaisons. This year's student council is sponsored by Mrs. Woolcott and Mr. Gilmore. This year's Student Council was extremely busy. By acquiring most of its funds from noon and basketball concessions, they were able to contribute money to a very worthy cause to the Trico school and were also able to give a gift for all the teachers on Teacher's Day. A big part of Student Council time is spent preparing for the Homecoming Dance and Parade. Sweetheart Dance and the Spring Dance. They not only plan the dances but help to construct the decorations and centerpieces for them. At the end of the year there is a week of fun known as Student Council Week. Each day has a different activity which students take part in and Friday, the classes compete in different games and races to end the fun filled week. As you can see. the Student Council is very busy throughout the school year. It proves to be a very rewarding experience when the members can work hard and still have fun.
