This year, the festival was held in early November at SIU Carbon-dale. The choirs rehearse all day in preparation for a concert that night. In order to participate the school music director must send in students' names along with a rating of their choral performance. The district committee then selects people from each school. When all the talent is put together, it sounds as though the people have been studying together all their lives. Front Row Mike Zang. Amy Cray Second Row Mark Tessereau. (ill Gentsch, lami Sternberg FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS From Finland Marko lauhiainen From Germany: Barbara Herrmann COMMENTS... Marko Jauhiainen: Being here is much different than in Finland. In the beginning it was difficult but I have already gotten used to it. I think this is an experience which real value is revealed not until I'm back home But the best in being here are all those marvelous people I have made friends with. Barbara Herrmann: I like being at this school very much. I like the students, the teachers and the easy way of life everybody has. Besides the food I like cruising through the town the most. But I also like the band and the games (football and basketball) a lot, since we don't have these things at home, back in Germany. HALLOWEEN 1. Where's Charlie Brown? 2. I vanl your blood' 3. They cheered along with the cheerleaders and even started some of their own cheers. Their efforts not only boosted the spirits of the players, but also helped get the crowd involved. During the games, there was a special feeling of electricity and excitement in the air And all of this is due to one group; the Black Knights. ASSISTANT EDITORS David Friess Lori Johnson 59 The Summit Staff is the backbone of the yearbook They spend many long hours working to meet their deadlines to create a book full of activities and the memories to leave behind them At the beginning of the school year each member visits a number ot local businesses asking them to help support our yearbook by purchasing an ad. These sales are the major contributors to the cost of the book Another fund-raiser which helps keep the costs low is the selling of shorts and t-shirts with the school mascot on them. For Valentine's Day, the annual carnation sale is held Students purchase a carnation and send it to their friend along with a special message The following fall when the Summit'' is handed out, the staff members eagerly examine the finished product realizing that all of their time and effort was well spent. 1 Clockwise Section Head Gma Gerber ding. The team consisted of 15 seniors, 17 juniors and 2 sophomores. They worked hard as a team and consequently they played hard as a team. Although the record doesn't show it the team was more competitive during the season since they were totally out of only one game Defensively the lackets were not outstanding Many times during the season did defensive play hurt them. As on every team there is an outstanding defensive player. Defensive End Greg Barnhart receives this title on account of his 57 tackles and 30 assists He also recovered two fumbles and sacked the quarterback seven times. Other noticeable defensive play was contributed by Linebacker Tim Atchison, with 36 tackles and 38 assists; Linebacker Chris Gaertner, with 40 tackles and 19 assists, Tackle Scott Hammel and Defensive End Chris Lingle, both having 30 tackles and 19 assists. The offensive play was centered around Quarterback Curt Clendenin and Split End )im Howie. They connected through the air many times to put the lackets on the board or pull them out of a tight spot. David Uffelman handled most of the running attack all by himself. He picked up approximately 900 yards on 130 carries The offense scored a total of 328 points in the season This year 3 lacket members were named to the All-SWE Conference teams. |im Howie was named to the first team as a split end for the second year Along with him to the first team was David Uffelman as a running back Scott Hammel was named to the second team for offensive line Both |im and David were also selected to the All-South team. The team won few meets, but they had highlights throughout the year, especially when the 3200m Relay team broke the school record in that event and continued to shave seconds until their time dropped to 8.31.9. The team ran in numerous invitationals and placed 5th in the conference meet at the end of the season. At the sectional meet, Uffleman placed in both the 200m and 100m run. In fact it was their last meet of the season, a tri-meet against our rivals Sparta and Murphy. The girls kept each others spirits high, ran very hard and deserved the win At the conference meet the girls ran very hard, placing in many events, including a first and second in the long jump and discus, but it wasn't enough to place them any higher tnan fifth. Melissa Reiman threw the discus 104' for a first place at the sectional meet. This throw qualified her for state competition and set a new school record.
