SUMMIT 1983 Volume 51 Chester High School Some lifelong friends are discovered during high school years, friends that mean a great deal to us. People who listen and care, give advice when it is needed, and never turn away when you are in need of a listening ear. We share some great and wonderful moments with our friends, for there is no possible way we could struggle through high school without them. They have taught us valuable lessons and shared in great joy. Friendships do not just come into being, they must be worked toward with understanding and trust. Let us, therefore, not let our minds lapse and drift apart from those who mean so much to us, but rather reach out and touch, that we may remain close. We hope this yearbook will help you remember your years at CHS and those who have been so close to you. Chester faced a tough team from Louisiana High School in Missouri and jumped out to a slim lead. It was a close contest throughout as host Cliff St. James fired question after question at the eight students, but Chester was finally defeated by Louisiana, the last question making the difference. Scholar Bowl C.H.S. sent a team of students of high academic standing to John A. Logan College in Carterville, where they competed with other area high schools in areas of general knowledge. Qualifications are fairly stiff. To be a member, a 4.25 grade point average must be held, and the student must be high in character, leadership, scholarship, and service. Qualified students are then voted for and judged by members of the faculty. Those who are picked then join the old members and their sponsor, Mrs. Riley, in the very prestigious and elite group. The highlights of the season, though, were some very strong individual outputs by several members. As an example, Paul Daschka was a conference medalist shooting a 76, and Larry Wingerter finished fifth overall by shooting an 81. 84 Football Captain Rhonda Wagner Jodi cheers on Even though the varsity cheerleaders were faced with the difficult task of raising the spirits of fans who were witnessing a losing season, they rose to the occasion and performed splendidly.
