• — Summit 1981 Volume 49 Chester High School Chester, Illinois Dedication The Summit of 1981 is dedicated to a teacher who for nine years has been an advocate of Chester High School’s youth. Any item pertaining to C.H.S., its youth, or events is represented on the door of her room. To the students of our high school, this shows how much she really cares. Her caring attitude is only one of the many reasons that the Summit staff would like to dedicate the 1981 yearbook to . . . What’s New at C.H.S. C.H.S. has gone through quite a few changes this year. In addition to some of the changes pictured on these two pages, we had computer scheduling for the first time, several new teachers, and a new school activity sign. 1. Instead of junk food the concession stand sold nutritious snacks. 2. Due to extensive storm damage, Colbert Memorial Gym had to be remodeled. 3. This picture is a last look at the old gym before remodeling began in February. 4. Other parts of the building were also redone because of the damage. This photo shows one of the many new wall graphics that were painted throughout the school. Notes On ... Well, we thought we would let you know. Ingredients used to make your yearbook were: croppers, pica rulers, grease pencils, quad-packs, lay-outs, ladders, deadlines, signatures, flats, double-page-snreads. type style, ghosting, tool lines, 4-color process, job stamp, body type, rough drafts and most of all... a theme. Add a sponsor, editors, section editors and general staff. Mix well and let simmer for one year and preston ... you have a yearbook!!! In order to learn this yearbook recipe, some staff members are chosen to attend the yearbook camp. Now let’s talk about cost. For an eight page color flat, used for senior pictures, the price was $670.00!! That’s not even the tip of the iceberg. To raise money to pay for these precious memory books the staff sold ads to area merchants and held a carnation sale on Valentine’s Day. 1st row (1 to r): Lori Welge, Jane Richey. Susan Korando. Everyone was excited about the plans that would finally start reconstruction in February on the old gymnasium. However that excitement was dampened for the Student Council and Art students when they found that the Spring Dance could not be held in tne gym as before. Many problems arose. Construction of all 27 characters plus two trees had to be done in the Art room, instead of on the stage as before. Another location was needed to hold the dance and the Chester Grade School was chosen. Then there was the problem of moving all the characters, the two trees, the latticed gazebo, tables, chairs, streamers, tools and any equipment essential for building to the grade school. The Council might have been in a difficult, if not impossible, situation had it not been for Gilster Mary-Lee and Mr. Raymond Kester. The Friday before the dance Mr. Kester came to the high school with a Gilster's trailer truck and helped load the decorations and delivered them to the grade school gym. The following Monday he again moved the decorations and equipment back to the high school. Our warmest THANKS are extended to Gilster’s and Mr. Kester. 56 Heather Laudan experiments with aerodynamic shapes and sizes. Notes on ... Anna Reiss investigates statistics. Before school let out in May of 1980, tin: new student council members were already making plans for new as well as old projects for the school year 1980-81. Preparations were made throughout the summer for Chester's first Popeye Picnic in September, at which the council sponsored a Popeye characters look-alike contest During August the council held an orientation for the incoming freshmen to help familiarize them with the school. The next .old biggest project for the council was I fomecoming. October 6-11. Work began 11. months before on the snake dance, bonfire, parade, game and dance. To promote school spirit the council sponsored a Halloween Dress-up Day. Since there was a home football game that night, the orange and black colors associated with Halloween helped raise the team's spirits. In November they sponsored a can food drive for the needy. It was to be a contest between the classes. However only 78 cans were donated. 65 of these came from the senior class. The week of December 15-19 a hall decorating contest was held. Each class was given an area to decorate in keeping with the Christmas holidays. Awards were given during the December 23rd assembly with the seniors taking first place. A movie was also shown during that time. During February a Sweetheart's Dance was held w ith the coronation of a King and Queen. A Special Olympics drive was also held February 23-27. The council set up a can at the concession stand during lunch hours in w hich donations were to be put. Each day the council donated S5 and the students were asked to match or exceed that amount. A total of $50 was donated. On St. Patrick's Day. March4!?, the council gave cookies to those students and teachers w ho were wearing green. The second largest project came in April — the Spring Dance. Due to renovation on our own girls' gymnasium, the dance was held at the grade school gym. Even though many complications arose, the dance was a success. In May came Student Council Week with school spirit promoting events scheduled throughout the entire week. Along with these projects the council also helped out with community projects. They provided ushers for the Chester Area Concert Association and helped promote the Blood Mobile. To help raise school spirit they sold Yellow jacket buttons to students and tow nspeople. Four Assemblies were held during the school year for the student body. The Council also assisted the teachers at the Parent-Teacher Conferences in November. For the first time the council bought matching l-shirts in school colors. The council's main fund raiser was the concession stand. Members were required to work during lunch hours, football and basketball games. Twice they participated in a student council exchange. In November two of the members went to Sparta and in April four council members from Marissa visited our school for a day. In March several members attended the District Convention and in May new officers attended the State Convention at Chicago in order to get more ideas for next year! 59 SADIE HAWKINS DAY PARTICIPANTS Terri Reask, Lorena Shaffer. Lori Welge, Gina Roth. Lynn Gerberding, Caroline Varsity The varsity volleyball team started the season out with high hopes. With two returning starters and the other four coming from a one-loss season at the junior varsity level, this seemed like the year that the girls would finally win the district crown. Coach Urquhart started his squad in a one-setter line-up. Lori Welge being the lone setter. The strategy won as many games as it lost. So Coach Urquhart moved all-conference selection Lynn Gerberding to setter. Lori's and Lynn's sets, along with Beth Ludwig's and another all-conference selection Caroline Kester's vicious spikes, kept the squad in many matches. Out of the team’s eleven losses, four of them went to the maximum three games. One match included the district opener against arch-rival Snarta. Chester won the first game 15-11 but dropped the last two with scores of 13-15 and 14-16. Truly the season outcome does not tell the true determination and spirit of the Yellowjacket squad. 120 Kester, Mary )o Korando, Beth Ludwig. Coach Urquhart. TOP: Freshmen. Four of the losing matches went to three games, and the others were lost by a few points. With all of the starters moving up to the varsitv level next year, hopes are high for a successful '81 campaign. In the only freshman match the Jackets split a pair with Per-ryville. Freshman Cliff Andrews promises to be a good prospect as he broke the school record in the 1600-meter run. Because of the large number of underclassmen. Coach Ken Paulus’ aid was sought. The freshmen and sophomores placed fifth in the conference track meet. 123 NOTES ON ... The offical s job is to give the bizarre, crazy, erratic sport some sort of sanity. VARSITY FOOTBALL Jackets suffer a disappointing season If one was lo look at a season record alone, you wouldn't be very impressed with the varsity football team. Sporting a 1-8 overall record, the true determination and spirit of the Yellowjackets is not reflected. One must look at the individual games to understand the team's character. Their first game was at Dupo. The lackets played a fine first half, but turnovers in the second half cost the boys the game. The final score stood 34-6 in Dupo's favor Arch-rival Sparta was next on the lineup. The jackets led at half-time, but the Bulldogs tied the score at the end of the third quarter. The opponents scored twice more and had a 15-3 lead when Ron Williams turned a 70-yard punt return into six points. Chester tried for an onside kick, but Sparta held on to win the game 15-10 The first home contest against Carlyle saw the Jackets topole 36-0 Turnovers harmed the squad as arives to the goal line were stalled by fumbles, interceptions, and penalties. Yellowjacket pride was evident in the season's fourth game. DuQuoin held a 20-0 half-time lead. Head coach Don Flowers then fired up his troops They responded bv tieing the game. In the overtime period Cnris Graber scored the first TD ana Chip Wittenbrink intercepted the Indians desperation pass as Chester won 32-20. The next three games proved fatal to the Jackets. These opponents were conference leaders Anna-Jonesboro. Murphysboro. and Pinckneyville. The defense held their ground by holding Anna and Murphy to only 27 points a piece. Chester was routed by Pinckneyville 53-0. The last conference game against Nashville was a do-or-die situation A win assured Chester of a sixth place conference finish while a loss would put them in the cellar After a defensive battle. Nashville finally broke the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. Chester counteracted with its own TD. but Nashville put it away in the closing seconds to win 14-6 In the season finale, many underclassmen saw playing action because several seniors were suspended for rule violations. Even though the Jackets lost 31-14 to Columbia, the young players were able to get a head start lor next year. OFFENSE The jackets scored 68 points for a touchdown-per-game average. They had 1,237 total yards. Chris Graber rushed through defenses for 333 yards. Tom Yankey led the passing attack. completing 28 of 91 passes with 8 interceptions. Yankey also held the punting chores as Brett Klind-worth handled the kicking. DEFENSE Opposing teams gained 2,808 total yards against Chesters defense. The Jackets tallied seven fumble recoveres, ten interceptions. and six quarterback sacks. Scott Maes led the way with 131 total tackles. FOOTBALL CHEERLEADERS Varsity Raising the spirits of win-starved fans is no easy job, but the varsity cheerleaders attacked the problem with enthusiasm. Deciding on who the tackle goes to or who pulled down the rebound is a tough decision. No matter what the decision is, somebody is going to get mad. I had more steals than that, or Didn't I have a faster time?” Despite what the athlete thinks, the statistician is probably right. When a player is out on the floor or field, the adrenaline is really flowing. Combine that with the yelling and cheering of the crowd and wierd things can start to happen. How while my eyes see only Thee, My life is still wet clay. Take my life. Lord, and use it While my hands are quick and ready And my heart is anxious to get a job done. Now Lord, while youth's dreams still fill my soul And youth’s ambition spurs me on. Use me now Lord Jesus, Before my eager hopes are tread to dust By other men who laid their dreams aside. Now while all the world's a harvest ready to be plucked And every man a soul in need of Christ. Use me, Lord, Now in this hour While I am sensitive to Thy touch And listening for Thy voice, Lest in another time, another day Thy Spirit find me fighting, Holding gain of earth or pride or lust. Lest then Thy voice be tin upon my ear And I be but a mass of hardened clay, Self-made, self-wrecked. Oh God, use me now To go and work and do or else to wait. Whatever it may be, Take my life and use it now and for eternity. Amen. 171 by Carole Gift Page £ • 175
