1977 SUMMIT Volume 45 Chester High School Chester, Illinois 3 Summit Honors Mr. John Trapp A man once said, A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. Adams This statement holds time as judge of its truth. Some teachers quickly make outstanding impressions upon their students. The influence of others is often not noticed for some time. We of the Summit Staff dedicate this yearbook to a teacher who has greatly influenced us both as a person, and as a teacher and coach. We also feel that now and in the future, other students at C.H.S. will be greatly affected by his teaching and coaching experience. The Summit Staff proudly dedicates the 1977 Summit to: Mr. John Trapp A DM1N1STRA TION . . . Here comes the setting sun. The seasons are passing one by one. Superintendent Holly C. Marchildon Mr. Holly C. Marchildon has served the city of Chester for many years as superintendent of schools. Under his direction all departments of the high school and grade school are run smoothly. It is Mr. Marchildon who coordinates the work of the school board with that of the students and teachers. Due to the skillful execution of his duties, Mr. Marchildon's presence is felt by all. 6 Principal MR. WARREN BUESCHER Mr. Buescher has served our school for three years now, and has done a great job as principal. His warm friendliness is appreciated by all who attend C.H.S. Assistant Principal Mr. King, the new assistant principal, is already a well-known figure at C.H.S. His generous personality has made him much admired. MR. ROBERT KING School Board Mr. A. The team will only lose three seniors, however, and next year, having retained all of their pitching talent and most of their batting talent, will pose a formidable threat to any first place contender. 1st ROW: Coach Thompson, Chuck Bemasek, Tim Thornton, Mike Gentch, Rob Wolz. 2nd ROW: Greg Koeneman, Chris Jones, Ed Kerkhover, Curt Weese, Tim Sickmeyer, Taylor Search. Although they only won one meet, this year's track team, under first-year head coach Herschbach has shown some encouraging signs. While Mark Stockwell was largely responsible for any successes the team had, the track team on the whole has shown much improvement. This season saw the first home track meet in school history, and it is hoped that several more home meets can be held next year. With fifteen of the nineteen team members returning next year with their talent and experience, the track team is looking forward to an even more successful season in 1978. 34 Struggles Won. . . . . . and Lost 135 Mark Stockwell, undoubtedly Southern Illinois' most outstanding athlete, had a truly unbelievable track season this year, finishing with a record of 384 points. He also won the Olney Decathlon with a total of 6442 points, surpassing the old record of 6236. The highlight of Mark's season was a third place finish in the high jump and the long jump and fourth place in the 330 yard low hurdle at the state meet. Mark set a total of five school records and eleven individual records at large meets. It will probably be a long time before Chester sees another athlete with talent as brilliant and varied as Mark Stockwell's.
