Through his teaching and coaching he has instilled in students and athletes drive and determination to strive on. To paraphrase the late Sir Winston Churchill: Never was so much owed by so many to one man. The 1975 Summit Staff proudly dedicates this book to that man: Mr. W. 0. Magazine Qales ... is another activity sponsored by Student Council. It is an effort to raise the needed money for dances and other programs for CHS students. Homecoming ... is one of the most hectic, exhausting, and enjoying weeks of the year. There is nothing to compare with the fun of building a float, the spirit in the snake dance and bonfire, the entertaining parade, the exciting game and the beautiful dance with the theme: Babes in Toyland . All of these things make Homecoming something special! With Each Dawn The Class of 1975 We'll Always Remember This year to coincide with our theme of nostalgia, the teachers were asked to give us a picture from their high school years. In order to gain an insight of the teachers, we asked them to write a short essay on the human and humorous sights of their lives. The Summit Staff wishes to thank all the teachers who participated in our project. Superintendent Mr. Holly C. Marchildon has served the city of Chester for many years as the Superintendent of Schools. Under his direction all departments of the high school and grade school are run smoothly. It is Mr. Marchildon who coordinates the work of the school board with that of the students and teachers. Due to the skillful execution of his duties, Mr. Marchildon’s presence is felt by all. 26 Mr. Holly C. Marchildon Mr. Wayne Collmyer is a new person at CHS, holding a new position as Assistant Principal. His duties consist of helping Mr. Buescher manage the activities at school and lending a helping hand to students; he also instructs a class. Mr. Warren Buescher Principal Assistant Principal Mr. Warren Buescher, the new principal at Chester High School, has become a well known figure to all students. He has showed his interest in students by letting the Osage Lute concert be held in the gym and by backing the Bleacher Bums. The Summit Staff welcomes him to CHS and thanks him for doing a great job. and Mr. Wayne Collmyer 27 Mr. V. Asselmeier; Mrs. R. Petrowske, Sec. to the Board; Mr. P. Fleming; Mr. J. Thomas; Mrs. A. Irvine; Mr. H. C. Marchildon, Super.; Mr. W. A. Schuwerk, Pres, to the Board; Mr. D. Hartenberger; Mr. T. Search, Jr. School Board and Office Staff Mrs. Sue Klindworth Mrs. Pearl Wagner 28 The most embarrassing thing that I can remember happened the first year I taught at Chester. My seventh hour class was decorating a Christmas tree. Since the room was small, we had to put the tree next to a tall narrow bookcase. As one of the boys started to get up from putting the skirt around the bottom of the tree, he grabbed the bookcase to pull himself up. The case turned over and all the books fell out on the head of another boy sitting on the floor next to the case. It made the most awful noise you can imagine and sent half the school up to see what had happened. I can never decorate a tree without seeing the look on that boy's face, as he sat there buried in books!'' Mrs. Ella VanMeter For one of my student teaching experiences in college, I had to teach a Sophomore gymnastics class for three weeks. Since this was the first class I had ever taught, and two of my professors were observing my teaching , I was concerned with doing my best. The first piece of apparatus that I was demonstrating was the vaulting horse. As I was showing the first and simplest vault, my foot got caught in the pommel and I fell flat on my face. ” Mrs. Linda Egge 30 Whatever happened to those crazy curls? J. Trapp B. Bryant '' An embarrassing situation came about on my second day of a junior high P.E. class. This occurred when I noticed several kids calling one boy Grubb”. As a teacher showing interest in his students, 1 asked the boy how in the world he got the name Grubb”. You guessed it - his name was Kevin Grubb! Mr. John Trapp Broadway John V. Al-Asad My most embarrassing moment, which was undoudtedly the class's most humorous incident, was the day my English IV students discovered my knowledge and love of herbs and spices such as PARSLEY. (It does, by the way, occasionally come in dried form, students!!!) Mrs. Billie Bryant . . . she gets younger as the years go by. Queen of the Hop One fall day some years ago I set out to explain the French direct object pronouns le” and la . While pointing at the words on the blackboard, I explained in the most authoritative voice I could muster, Now, that is the he-it, and this is the she-it.” The students became hysterical with laughter and I was mortified. I look back now with a smile to that time when a slip of the tongue like that shocked a whole class of teenagers and embarrassed the teacher as well. Mrs. Virginia Al-Asad 3! 32 One time I was wearing a dress that buttoned down the front. As I started between the rows of chairs I brushed against one and my dress came unbuttoned from top to bottom. Needless to say I didn't wear that dress again!'' Mrs. Wanda Riley Those were the days. It's going to be one of those days! Relaxing after school. My first year of teaching was in a small high school in Missouri. I was Junior sponsor and it was my duty to direct the class play. One day, during lunch hours, I was working with a group of students putting up scenery. With all of the sawing and hammering, I failed to hear the bell ring. When I glanced at my watch, I had worked most of the hour while I was supposed to be teaching science. I dashed to the room to see what had happened to my class and found the principal watching them. Mr. Robert Fuqua Mr. Elliot Reiman teaches Geometry, Math IV, Physics, and Advanced Physics. He is a very dedicated teacher. He takes time to sponsor the Radio Club and help any student interested in science. Mr. Manley O. Limbaugh is a unique teacher. He makes the uninterested student come alive in his class. Mr. Limbaugh teaches Biology and General Science and in addition sponsors the Science Club. Junior Miss The most embarrassing thing happened to me when I went to high school one day with my house slippers on. In order to save face I told everyone that I had stepped on glass and couldn’t wear shoes. I limped around all day getting sympathy from everyone. All went well Until 3:30 when Everyone runs to the bus to go home.'' Ms. Darlene Hornbostel Mr. Wiley is one of C.H.S. 's newest teachers. He teaches World Problems and Sociology. Mr. Wiley is truly a credit to CHS. Want to play ball? The Graduate One very warm day 1 was teaching a History class. I felt a little faint. I laid my head down on my desk and passed out. The students say 5-10 minutes later I came to and as 1 raised my head there was the class as quiet as could be staring straight at me.” Mr. David Nottrott O.K. Mr. Smith! Once I was in a play and was standing center stage and had forgotten my line. The prompter whispered to me Where is the chair? I looked all around and saw no chair. Again the prompter whispered. Where is the chair? I turned toward the prompter and said, That's what I'd like to know? Mr. William Smith D. Hornbostel D. Nottrott D. Wiley W. Smith 33 My favorite color is yellow because it generates a happy response from viewers. And because of other things too . . . My favorite teacher was the high school art teacher Miss LaRue, who married my next favorite, Mr. Woods who taught history. The student body watched with interest as their love blossemed and grew. Many attended their wedding ... We cheered when their first child, a boy, was born . . . We cried unashamedly at her death two years later. Perhaps that is why I can still hear her say, (when we asked for constructive criticism) Put a little yellow in it. Perhaps that is why my favorite color is yellow. Mrs. Pauline Paetzhold D. Clendenin R. Heldebrandt So serious An embarrassing moment happened to me at a basketball game between two arch rivals. The opposing team had an outstanding player, who could jump like a jack rabbit and was pulling down many a rebound. We as cheerleaders were very displeased with him. In the fourth quarter during a time out, we went out on the floor to do a cheer. As we went out someone said, Let's trip him as he comes out of the huddle.'' Well, guess who ended her cheer in the splits and right in front of the opposing team huddle and who ended up with the player tripping over her back leg and falling on top of her - Me! Mrs. Donna Clendenin Hold that pose! Mr. Roy Heldebrandt teaches Agriculture and General Science. He is always willing to help his students when they have trouble. He also takes the time to sponsor F.F. A. and the freshman class. P. Paetzhold 3 out of five, getting better. S. Fuqua J. Birchler Mrs. Shirley Fuqua is C.H.S.'s typing, clerical and record-keeping teacher. She guides students The cat jumped over the moon? Now in subjects they never had before. She has devoted really! her free time as a junior class sponsor. J. Frazier Mr. Innocence One of the funniest experiences I had was back in 1966. I was coaching Junior Varsity Baseball and we were playing Columbia. The game was tied 2-2 and we were at bat for the last time. We had two outs; Bruce Buatte was on second base in scoring position and our best stick was at the plate. Sure enough, the batter hit safely through the middle and here comes little ol' skinny Bruce going as hard as he can go. 1 give him the green light to go all the way, but in my enthusiasm I hit him in the fanny as he rounded third base and knocked him down. Bruce got up and tried to score, but they nailed him at home plate. Columbia got a run in their half of the inning and beat us 3-2. Mr. John Birchler Say cheese!' Working with such creative geniuses as my Home Ec. Ill class has been quite an experience for me. On several memorable occasions this group’s special talents have been displayed, such as: the body cake decorating surprise, their Academy Award role playing presentations of advertisements and dating relationships. But the top was my rather unique Christmas gift - an indispensable item with a variety of uses - Knee pads, a double hanging planter, or bumper guards for my car!! 35 Mrs. Judy Frazier Newlyweds An embarrassing moment happened to me during a tournament game at Benton. Before the bus left, I put my dark uniform in my bag. As we were dressing, 1 noticed the other guys were putting on their white uniforms. Hey, Isaid, we're wearing black tonight. No,” they said, White. Yep, my white suit was at home. I had to wear a top that was too small and the trunks from one of the SPARTA players - His was the only one that came close to fitting. Luckily Mom had a pin to hold them up!! Mr. Leonard Clendenin Mr. William Bondurant is known to all at C.H.S., especially to those who take shop or building trades. Besides teaching, he finds time to sponsor the senior class. Mr. Bondurant is truly a remarkable teacher with a hammer and a saw. Oh these right angles always get me! One of the most familiar people around C.H.S. is Coach Rocky Bridges. He is C.H.S.'s athletic director. He teaches Boy's P.E. and coaches the freshman football teams. Coach Bridges is also a driving instructor. Dear Joe Namath, ” Ain't I a Doll? Besides his duties as coach of the varsity football team and track team, Coach Ken Pau-lus also teaches Driver Training and Safety. Coach Paulus takes time out to sponsor the C-Club. An embarrassing moment was one evening a certain student dropped the standards that hold the volleyball net, down on me. I had a bruise that lasted for three weeks! Ms. Cathy Monroe ''I'm ready to go cruisn' R. Bridges K. Paulus C. Monroe 37 It was the beginning of our sewing unit and I was explaining the various sewing machines. As I walked to the machine in the back of the room, I slipped on an extension cord and nearly fell; luckily I managed to catch my balance just in time. Hoping no one had seen, I was even more embarrassed when the class broke out laughing. After regaining my composure, we went immediately into the rules of safety while sewing.” Mrs. Sandy Col vis Over at last! Oh, my little soldier boy. School is like savings in a bank. You can not take out what you never put in. Nor can you tell how much you will need, until it is too late to increase it. Mr. Sherman Martin M-I-C see ya real soon, K-E-Y why, because we like you” M-O-U-S-E. Probably one of the funniest times of this year was my debut as Mickey Mouse. Actually the Disneyland halftime performance let me be a part of the band again - in a funny sorta way. I really enjoyed the experience because it was one of the many which helped my first year at C.H.S. to be a fun-filled one. Mrs. Judy Hopkins As I entered Room 207, twenty eager, vehement, enthusiastic students awaited me. It was an exam day. I was going to give the test by using the overhead projector. In a few minutes everything was ready and I sat down on the swivel stool, when I suddenly realized my foot was caught in the rung of the stool. I tried to get both of my feet flat on the floor, but it was too late. The stool swiveled one way and I the other. Result - one teacher on her stomach on the floor. Was I embarrassed! J. Hinkle Mrs. Alice Sabo How did you get by me with only two classes on your schedule?? One boy 1 coached went to a track meet and warmed up, got ready to go -got to the starting line, pulled his sweatsuit off and didn't realize 'til everyone broke up, that he had forgoten to wear his track suit. ’' Mr. Jim Hinkle In a class of English in C.H.S. I was trying to give memory devices to the students to aid their spelling. I used the phrase seize by the neck to emphasize the sequence of SE, and lay siege to the city for the sequence of SI. Finally I came to the word WEIRD. My cue here was we are weird.” I carefully enunciated the words with the hope the students would see the use of the letters WE in both words. In the silence which followed my profound statement, some stalwart sophomore spoke out, Speak for yourself, Mrs. Wool-cott. The shy new pappa. 39 Mrs. Bernice Woolcott Mrs. L. Schuchert, Mrs. W. This year marked the second season of cross-country at C.H.S., and it was even better than last year. The Jackets achieved third place in the conference meet compared to 6th place in the meet last year. The Jackets had a tough time getting started but once over the hurdle of winning their first meet, the Jackets gained enough momentum to end up with a record over . 500. Danny Ohlau was the most outstanding player on the team, and also in the conference. He was first place runner in most of the meets, and also won first in the conference meet. Danny Ohlau and John Schmerbauch were the two senior lettermen. Mike Schulte, Don Martin, and Kevin Dierks, who broke his ankle in the last half of the season, were the junior lettermen. Tom Buescher and Kevin Hartman, sophomores this year, also lettered. The Yellowjackets are looking forward to next year and an even better season, with five of the seven lettermen returning. The new dimensions in sports this year at Chester High were the girls’ softball, volleyball and track teams. The first team organized in the fall was the softball team. The team showed much promise for next year and years to come. The girls were all rookies and their coach, Miss Monroe, worked mainly on improvement. The team did improve a great deal by the end of the season. Three girls were chosen for most improved, most valuable, and most sportsmanlike awards. J. V. Bask The J. V. had a successful season as they tied for second place in the S. W.E. Conference while compiling a 12-6 won lost record. They continued to progress as the season stretched on and could give Chester its first back to back winning seasons in quite a long time. The J. V. imitated the Varsity’s style of play and several players had much varsity experience. They will be able to execute this year’s varsity's style of play effectively. 125 FRONT ROW: Mike Schulte, Gary Bert, Joe Buatte, Terry Snider, Mike Tindall, Jeff Bodeker. The Frosh ended their season with a very respectable record of 13-4. This is the best freshman team to come up in a long time at CHS, and they have a great future ahead of them. Sam Hammel was the high scorer for the freshman. The sophomores had a rather disappointing season this year, with a record of 2-9. Although they were not as successful as they had hoped to be, their poor season can be panially attributed to the loss of two of their best players. The sophomores are looking forward to next year, with the hope that they can put it all together for a more successful season. 126 FRONT ROW: Scott Buescher, Joe Buatte, Terry Snider, Taylor Search, John Cowell. Double Champions With the return of five lettermen, all having much playing experience from the previous year, things had to look-up” for the Yellow-Jacket Cagers in the coming season of 1975. Coach Hinkle coined the slogan Chester Basketball will come alive in 1975 , which would be used many more times in the upcoming season. Quite true to Coach Hinkle's predictions, Chester basketball did come alive in 1975. The won lost record of 18-10 was only one of the great improvements over previous years at Chester. The Yellowjackets won their own Invitational Tournament, a feat which hasn't been accomplished in the whole existence of the tourney, or thirteen years. The Jackets’ longest winning streak was five games; that is as many games as they won all last year. Their record was the best of any Chester cage teams in the last fifteen years. The Jackets averaged almost 75.5 points per game which paints an accurate description of the kind of basketball they played in 1975. Exciting. And speaking of exciting, one might have to mention the high point of the season which was undoubtedly the regional championship. The Jackets won the first regional title ever by a Chester team by defeating 10th ranked Sparta 91-89 in a thrilling overtime contest. The Jackets earned a very respectable 10th ranking among Class A schools in Southern Illinois after their defeat of highly touted Sparta. The team of 1975 won two championships and probably started a new era for Chester basketball. This year's team was composed of almost the same people as last years and still only three starters will be missing when the season starts next year. The basically young team handled the fundamentals much better this year and therefore gave their opponents much more serious competition. The Jackets showed a better defensive game to their opponents as well as an improved hitting attack. With the experience gained this year in the field and on the mound, next year’s Yellowjacket team hopes to be a major contender for the conference title. 130 J.V.
