It is troublesome and deep digging for pure waters; but when once you have come to the spring; they rise up and meet you. 2 The theme the I 1973 Summit is I Climb Ev’ry Moun- 'j? tain.” This book fj may well represent [I one mountain top h reached in each of ■ our lives. Therefore, I, let us, in the future, ™ continue to CLIMB EV’RY MOUNTAIN 1973 Summit Dedication The teacher who is attempting to teach without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn is hammering on cold iron. The above quote by Horace Mann is, without a doubt, quite true. If a teacher cannot inspire his pupils to learn, the task of teaching is as difficult as hammering on cold iron. Many teachers are not as dedicated to their work as the one the 1973 SUMMIT is honoring. This teacher has the ability to inspire her pupils to learn in the vari- ous classes that she has taught. She has earned the respect from her students and fellow teachers that she well deserves. She has influenced many with her fine character and knowledge in the past and will continue to do so in the future. The SUMMIT staff proudly dedicates the 1973 SUMMIT to: Mrs. Leslie Ellis 4 organizations organizations • organizationi Mrs. Woolcott; Mrs. Paetzhold; Nancy Howie, secretary-treasurer; Kathem Wilson, vice-president; John Bodeker, president; Cathy Saxenmeyer, Social Chairman; Mr. Breuer; (not pictured, Cheri Coffey, Extra-Curricular Chairman). V. finished off their season with a 3-5 mark. These boys will be good varsity material next year, as many saw varsity action this year. Pat Mulholland, Dwight Brown, Kelly Lawrence, Larry and Wayne Korando, Toby Search, and Jr, Vieregge played Varsity. The freshmen put together a record of2-4, Tindall and Bodeker were the team’s leading rushers. Tindall was also the leading scorer with 7 TD's and a total of 52 points. If these boys keep up their enthusiasm, we'll have fine football for years. Craig Witbart was the leading rusher with 113 yards in 20 carries. The defense was statistically impressive as only one first down was alloted the Tornadoes. Chester fought hard to earn its second victory. It was 9-0 over the Wildcats of ANNA-JONESBORO. The only scoring came as a result of a recovery of a bad snap for a safety, and a short plunge by Witbart for a TD. The credit for the shutout goes to the defense as it kept the Wildcat drives from crossing the goal line. The first disappointment of the year came at PINCK-NEYVILLE. The Jackets played well in the first half, but then in the last half, Kirk Provart got the Panthers rolling. Provart ran 50 and 81 yards for scores and threw 45 yards for a TD. The final tally registered 26-0 for Pinckneyville. The Rangers of BENTON paid back the Jackets for the humiliating 12-6 win the year before. The Rangers, known much better for their ability to win on the court than on die field, enjoyed a revengeful 28-13 victory at die expense of Chester. The Jackets had their big chance to break the losing streak against the Hornets of NASHVILLE. Nashville also saw the game as one of opportunity. The disconsolate Jackets just could not maintain a drive into the end zone. In the 22-8 Hornet win, injuries played a part. Brad Wit-tenbom scored the only CHS TD on a fumble recovery. Game Summaries Stan Clary gave quite a show, but no Yellowjacket enjoyed it in a 48-8 DUQUOIN Indian massacre. Clary scored touchdowns of 9, 50, and 63 yards. Hopkins hit Butch Powley with a pass for Chester’s only score. Sophomore Mike Sulser made the longest Chester gain in the night as he went 40 yards from scrimmage into Indian territory. Tim Brown and his MURPHYSBORO team-mates could hardly believe that they were playing the supposedly lowly Yellowjackets in the first half. Finally Brown rallied his team by throwing five touchdown passes on the night. The game was the CHS Homecoming and was played in typical Chester football weather - rain. The final score was 40-12, Murphysboro. The poorest exhibition of football occurred at DUPO. Ex-Jacket coach Jerry Germain let his players pour it on in a 60-8 win. Parder and Parrin figured in almost every touchdown for Dupo. The SPARTA Bulldogs rounded out the '72 season for Chester in a game played in the friendly confines of the Chester bowl. David St. James played the role of Gary Dollins in the 44-0 rout. The longest of his runs was for 50 yards and a TD after he had reversed his field to avoid the hustling Jackets. The game marked the end of high school football for 14 CHS seniors. This was Coach Paulus' third season as head coach of the Yellow-jackets. Statistically, it was a poor season. However, despite the 2-7 record, there was a sort of pride that was associated with the team. A sort of pride of being part of a team, a part of a unit. Certainly, these boys will never forget the practices, games, winning, losing, working with K. P. and his staff, and all the other experiences they had with the team. 121 PAT DENNIS JIM DAVID JOHN RICK SCOTT CRAIG MULHOLLAND HOPKINS FLEMING KORANDO BODEKER ROCHE WELGE WITBART BRAD MIKE DWIGHT KELLY MARK GARY STEVE MARK DEMOND SEYMOUR BROWN LAWRENCE HORNBOSTEL CASETTA LEUSCHKE McKENZIE LARRY DON WAYNE TOBY 'JUNIOR' PHIL WAYNE TIM KORANDO FAVIER SHEMONIC SEARCH VIEREGGE MACIEISKI KORANDO KORANDO BOB GARY DELBERT BUTCH STEVE KEVIN RANDY BRAD WALL ALMS PETROWSKE POWLEY RAHLFS WEBER RODEWALD WITTENBORN COACHES: HEAD COACH PAULUS COACH SMITH COACH TRAPP COACH BRIDGES 122 Basketball ’ FRONT ROW: Steve Leuschke, Pat Mulholland, Paul Koeneman, James Best, Randy Rodewald, Tad Search, Rich Feuerhammer (mgr.). Gibbs allowed only three hits in his seven innings of pitching. The following day the Bulldogs pounded the Jackets 12-1. Caron had the loss. Chester found they could hit in the next game against MURPHYSBORO. Hughes, Bob Wittenborn, and Frazer had two hits each, and as a team, Chester collected 12 hits but lost 11-8. In their next game, Chester came up with 11 hits but only 3 runs as they lost to TRICO 6-3. PINCKNEYVILLE handed Chester their tenth consecutive loss. The final score was 4-1.
