Friday afternoon, the Homecoming parade was led by the Civil Air Patrol Color Guard and the Chester Yellowjacket marching band. Convertibles carrying the retiring queen and the 1965 queen candidates were followed by the floats and die senior football players. Before the parade was over, everyone was wishing for fur coats and umbrellas for protection against the cold and rain. Friday night the Chester Yellowjackets defeated the DuQuoin Indians 13 to 6. At halftime, after the band float, We'll Get ’Em in the End, had been announced winner of the prize for best float, retiring queen Donna DiBenedetto crowned Miss Sheila Linton the Homecoming Queen of 1965. Mike Korando starts the three-day Homecoming festivities by lighting the bonfire. The C. H. S. marching band leads the Homecoming parade. The senior float, SWE, Here We Come, secures second prize. The band float, We'll Get 'Em in the End , takes first prize. The seniors show tneir enthusiasm by riding in the parade before the game. Schroeder 1965 Junior Play Finders Creepers was a zany mystery-comedy featuring those brilliant teenage detectives, Wilbur Maxwell and Hercules Nelson. The two supersleuths decided to solve the mystery of Mr. Quigley's presumed death. In the process, they were almost killed; they ruined Mr. Quigley’s plan; and they got Here's Uncle Bob thrown into the klink. However, everything turned out fine, and Here and Wilbur were crowned the heroes of the day. The cast, under the able direction of Mr. Trew Lockhart, was as follows: Aunt Mary, Bernetta Headrick; Celeste, Susan Preusse; Claude, Gary Schwent; Daphne, Nancy Brown; Dr. Brown, John Greager; Frankie, Patty Yankey; Granny, Cynda Klosterhoff; Harry Schuster, Terry Bollman; Hercules Nelson, Ricky Cash; Madeline, Mardell Moeller; Mr. Quigley, Benny Picou; Nina, Sheila Linton; Uncle Bob, Darrel Ehlers; Wilbur Maxwell, Nicky Wolff. 1965 Spring Dance On Friday, May 14, 1965, the Student Council sponsored its annual Spring Dance, The theme for this year Bon Voyage was depicted with colorful decorations of light blue and white. Along the sides of the dance floor were waves which gave the effect of one's being on the deck of a ship looking out over the ocean. A gangplank, erected at the entrance of the dance floor, created a feeling of walking onto an oceanliner. Music for the dance was provided by a St. Louis combo called the Du Tones. Retiring queen: Monna Morgan 1965 May Fete The senior girls majestically perform the stately May Pole Dance, Page Lynn Weber and herald Nancy Eggemeyer. 1965 May Fete Queen, Miss Sandy Howie, pays tribute to retiring queen Miss Monna Morgan. 12 A novelty dance featuring two white mice carries out the Cinderella theme. The 1965 queen and her royal court. Cinderella Cheryl Gardiner performs a solo dance at the May Fete festivities. The Cinderella May Fete of 1965 lived up to its reputation in beauty, grace, and showmanship. The decorations were by far the most beautiful and spectacular in their vivid tints and shades of green, orange, and yellow. The mice holding up the standards were winsome little rascals. The beautiful throne with the huge crown on top was a suitable setting for our beautiful May Queen and her attendants. The Cinderella theme was carried out very effectively throughout the program: the mean step-mother, the selfish step sisters, and yes! the handsome prince and our lovely Cinderella. These, along with all the loyal subjects of the kingdom, came to pay homage to Her Highness—the May Queen. The new queen, Sandra Howie, was crowned by the retiring queen, Monna Morgan. The special Maids of Honor were Joan Schaardt, Susan Springer, Gay Lynn Usher, and Cathey Welge. The program was planned and worked out by Mrs. Juer-gens and her entire physical education classes. The beautiful decorations and programs were under the direction of Mrs. Paetzhold, assisted by her art classes. The music was furnished by the Rhythm Rascals under the direction of Mr. Birch-ler. The beautiful, traditional dances—the May Pole Dance by the senior girls and the Garland Dance by the junior girls— together with all the specialties and group numbers again made a very impressive, spectacular, and beautiful program. Cathy Favier, Paula DiBenedetto, and Sheila Linton prepare a witch's brew. 13 The sophomore girls perform a novelty dance. Candid Camera Jackets Win First ' The year 1965 marked the first time in the history of Chester High School that a Yellowjacket football squad has secured a Southwest Egyptian Conference crown. The Jackets compiled an unblemished conference record of six wins and no losses, while the overall record read eight and one. Poised and ready after a resounding 39 to 0 victory over Carterville in the season opener, Chester met two strong SWE title contenders—Anna-Jones-boro and Pinckneyville. Result: Chester scores two victories in conference battle. The rolling Jackets were momentarily slowed by a stubborn Valle eleven. Valle’s 20 to 7 triumph, however, didn't halt the Jackets for long as they rebounded with live consecutive victories—four conference and one non-conference. Chester's finale against perennial rival Sparta proved to be an exciting one. Sparta struck pay dirt first, but their ecstacy was short-lived. An inspired Yellowjacket squad swamped the Bulldogs to Chester hits pay dirt, end a terrific season on a sweet victorious note. FIRST ROW: A. Schuwerk, M. Usher, J. Greager, D. Lowry, N. Wolff, J. The National Honor Society, which was founded in 1921, has as its main objective the challenging of students to higher accomplishments in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The election of members is based on all four attributes, not on scholarship alone, although no student can be accepted whose scholastic average is less than B . Once a student has been selected for membership, he should not only continue to demonstrate those outstanding qualities which brought about his selection, but he should also exert his influence to improve conditions about him and to promote those qualities—Leadership, Character, Scholarship, and Service—for which the National Honor Society stands. 34 The candles of the National Honor Society are symbolic of leadership, scholarship, character, and service. Graduates 80th Class In these momentous times in the history of our great country, education is the beacon that keeps the ideals of democracy glowing brightly in our hearts and minds. For the past eighty years, Chester High School has inculcated in its students the wonderful gift of knowledge. May this great opportunity to learn be preserved for and bestowed upon future generations! As a result of twenty-four years of development, the Pride of Southern Illinois,” built in 1858, became in 1882 a two story wing of a new three story building. Then with the addition of a third wing in 1904, the Chester Public School system reached maturity. After twenty-three years of service, in 1927, the then-modern school building gave way to an all new Chester High School. The year 1936 brought the addition of a new gymnasium. The wheels of progress continued to roll. In 1962, Chester High School reached the epitome of educational facilities with the addition of new classrooms and Colbert Memorial Gymnasium. One of the cornerstones in the foundation of our democracy is education. May Chester High School continue to strengthen that foundation by rolling with the wheels of progress as it has in the past. 1962 Joyce Clevenger Treasurer Sandra Simmons Secretary Mark Colvis Vice-President Jeremy Sabo President Junior Class Sponsors Miss Pedigo Mr. Fuqua 21 Junior Class Officers Sally Andrews Mitchell Asbury Craig Barnes Lynn Beare Geraldine Bert Janet Bierman Larry Bierman Rebecca Bierman Cecil Bova Linda Brayfield Fred Brecht Robert Brown Terry Brown Paula Buck 4; L ih Frank Bledsoe Mike Bond Judy Byram Ronald Caron James Carter Jeff Carter Linda Cash Kenny Casten Mark Childs Bruce Clayton Mark Colvis Jim Cowell Linda Cushman Peggy Cushman Bill Cushman Gerald Davis Vs o' Lewis Dawes Neal Dial Monica Dilday Ted Dilday Gwen Dungey Carole Durkee Cheryl Eggemeyer Bob Farmer Dan Friz Janet Fulford Richard Gendron Steve Gerecke Alice Gerlach Susan Gerlach Tom Gilster Pete Glass David Graham Pamela Gremmels Margaret Gross Connie Guethle Garlene Hammel Jocelyn Hargis Bill Haynes Rhonda Heeszel Byron Heob Larry Hopkins Pam Hornberger Mike Howie Michael Jeremiah Joe Kattenbraker Ralph Kattenbraker Don Kennedy Richard Kriete Jean Lamer Lois Larison Betty Lohman John Lott Janet Loucks John McBride Richard McClure Neal McDonough Diane McFadden Mary McGee Nancy McGuire Karen Martin Sharon Martin Bruce Melzer Oletha Meyer Connie Moeller David Mueller Donna Mueller Patty Mueller Steve Paulus John Pautler Larry Petrowske Katy Phillips Claudia Picou Deborah Picou Loretta Pike Ruth Rehmer Suzanne Rheinecker Lana Rosendohl Eddie Roth Susan Runge Jeremy Sabo Paul Schaubert Sandra Simmons Barry Smith Patsy Smith Robert Sprengel Steve Springer Luetta Steele Jerry Strickland Karen Stull Roger Surman Patty Sweany Kenny Taggart Priscilla Thies Larry Troue Gary Usher 1 Milton Vickers Sandra Vogel Nancy Wagner Marla Ward Lynn Weber Nina Wham Opal Wingerter 83 Sophomore Class Sponsors Mrs. Arnett Mr. Bruns Sophomore Class Officers 84 Jana Frazer, Secretary Mona Myatt, Treasurer Andy Schuwerk, Vice-President, Richard Hartenberger, President Janet Bach Bob Baker Jane Beare Judy Bellinger Barbara Bendorf Larry Beshears Deborah Best Eileen Bierman Mary Blechle Sharon Blockley Robert Boeger Chris Bond Janiece Brecht JoAnn Brecht Mary Brown Diane Buatte Donna Canady Roberto Chiesa Marvin Cottingham Edward Cowan 85 Larry Eggemeyer Peggy Eggemeyer Stanley Eggemeyer Larry Farmer Neal Fraembs Danny Frazer Donna Frazer Jana Frazer 86 Kevin Fudge Cathy Gaertner Phillip Gaertner Cheryl Gardiner Bob Goedecke John Gordon Linda Grah John Graham Richard Hartenberger Debra Hasemeyer Jacqueline Haynes Randy Helmers Steve Herrell Terry Hirte Myra Holcomb Helen Hoppe Edward Hornberger Carolyn Johnson Gary Jolley Randy Jung Donna Klein Gary Knott Donna Korando Terry Korando Lynn Kraft Patty Limbaugh Leta Link Donnie Lowry Brenda Lucas Bill MacDonald Donna McCormick Monica McGuire 87 Mark McLean LaCleta Mansker Patricia Marshall Corinne Martin Ruth Mennerich Kathleen Miller Robert Miller Robert Mitchell 88 Sharon Montroy Jan Mueller Judy Mueller Patricia Mueller Mona Myatt Jimmie Niemeyer Ronnie Nitzsche Steve Otten Gerry Paulus Donald Petrowske Christina Picou William Pierce Sue Pond Wanda Rader Dorothy Rigdon Richard Rinne Jake Rohrich Marsha Rust Alan Sabo Mary Schroeder Robert Schroeder Andrew Schuwerk Joanna Sellers Ronald Sheely Robert Sheets Edward Stallman Patricia Straight Patti Surman Deborah Taggart Brian Thies Linda Tindall Joe Tretter Michael Usher Carmita Varner Lanny Varner Linda Veach Michael Vickers Cara Vieregge Mary Jo Walters Jeff Warhausen 90 Judy Werle Joyce Williamson Linda Wingerter Bruce Witbart Stephen Wright Everett Wunderlich Pamela Yankey Ethel Young Georgia Zerban FRESHMEN D.
