As Fritz Roth grew in stature, there was also a growth in his friendships and in his influence for things that were gay and good. Perseverance, cooperation, responsibility, and a sense of contagious gaiety were the brightest facets of his personality. His high school activities included chorus, baseball, basketball, football, track, bowling, intramural sports, class plays, science club, and Future Farmers of America. Whatever the activity, Fritz gave his all. In loving memory we pay tribute to that spirit. May it be with us today and every day as an inspiration in all that we do. 10 —Hazel Stanley Our Heavenly Father takes for His own; The finest so they say. How true this is, we came to know. Only yesterday. He called our Fritz and held him close. In tender loving arms; And took him home to live in peace; Protected from all harm. Heaven must be a greater place; For those who sojourn there; Because our Fritz has joined that throng. Forever free from care. In these dark days of dreadful grief; We must cling to faith and prayer. Until the healing hand of time; Can make us less aware. —Hazel Stanley 11 SEATED, LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Myatt, L. Brelje, Q. Manion, R. Sauer, J. Marchildon, B. Cushman, Mr. Manwaring. Miss Hazel Stanley and Mrs. Alice Sabo, have given collectively more than a half century of service to the public schools of Chester. Miss Stanley became a member of the school staff in 1927; Mrs. Sabo joined the faculty in 1933. Each is now teaching her second generation of Chester students. In many respects their teaching careers have followed parallel patterns. Each has taught in both the elementary school and in the high school. Each one is presently teaching English. Each is dedicated to her profession in the fullest sense of the word. Moreover, each has brought with her to the teaching profession dignity, enthusiasm, and an understanding of human nature. We, the members of the Summit Staff, take this means of giving them public recognition for the many years of meritorious service they have given to the Chester schools. Miss Hazel Stanley Mrs. Alice Sabo 7£ Miss Hazel Stanley Miss Stanley moved to Chester when she was in grade school and graduated from both Chester Grade and Chester High School. She had always wanted to be a teacher, so after working a year in a local store, she enrolled at S.I.U. In the ensuing years, she also attended summer sessions at the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin. Later she attended George Peabody College for teachers. While in college she was elected to Kappa Delta Pi, and National scholastic honor societies in Engliish and in education. In 1946 she was selected for membership in Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honor society for teachers. She has long been a member of local, state, and national education groups and has held a number of offices in them: president of the Chester Teachers' Association; treasurer and a member of the executive board of Randolph County Education Association; representative to the Delegate Assembly of the Southwestern division; delegate to the Illinois Education convention; delegate to the National Education Association Convention in Miami Beach. In addition, she is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, Illinois English Teachers, and the Southern Illinois Association of Teachers of English. At present she is serving as a member of the executive board for the latter group. Her greatest recreational interest is travel, which has carried her to nearly every state and to Mexico and Canada. Out of travel has grown a secondary hobby, photography. Mrs. Alice Sabo Mrs. Alice Sabo was born in Chester and attended the Chester Public Schools. She graduated from Chester High School in 1928 and received an A.B. degree from Washington University in 1932. She has also completed a teacher-librarian course at the University of Illinois. In 1933 Mrs. Sabo accepted a position as teacher of the sixth grade in the Chester Grade School. In 1938 she transferred to the high where she has been a member of the faculty for seventeen years. During this time she has taught social studies, geography, ancient history, Spanish I and II, English I, II, and III, and Vocational English II. Mrs. Sabo served as high school librarian for four years. Her duties in the extra-curricular field have included: sponsor of the The Summit, sponsor of the Buzz, sponsor of the Dramatic Club, senior class sponsor, freshman class sponsor, senior trip sponsor and director of the junior plays. During the years that Mrs. Sabo has spent in the schools, she has also participated in a number of educational, athletic, civic, cultural and religious activities. These include: Chester Grade School Girls' Basketball Team, CHS Orange and Black, CHS Girls' Glee Club, Washington University Women's Rifle Team, Washington University Women's Cooperative Council, Member of the First M.E. For the past five years Mrs. Sabo has spent her three month vacation in Cuba, where they have a home in Cojimar, the small village well-known today as the setting of Earnest Hemingway's Nobel Prize winning book. And listen to our tale of woe; The Summit Staff of '58 Has a sad, sad story to relate. The finished product which now you see Is the concerted effort of you and me; We tenderly nourished each little page With an eye to pleasing both critic and sage The Summit traveled a long, long road. And the Summit staff bore a tremendous load We made mistakes all along the way Dating way back to the previous May. Our May Fete pictures, we did not take; Our sales quota we failed to make; We lost our big black record book. And to the proofs gave never a look. Our cover order we somehow mislaid; Our copy schedule was long delayed; Our honor's section was shoved about. But it's right here, |ust have no doubt I We've had a truly harassing year.
