1' fm In FSI? THE 1954 SUMMIT CHESTER HIGH SCHOOL CHESTER, ILLINOIS OPQLUOI' As a motion picture is rapidly projected onto a screen only to fade soon into blurred images, so will the episode of this school year soon become but faint recollections. It is the hope of the 1953 54 Summit Staff that, as you glance through this book in years to come, you will recapture some of the drama and excitement of this part of your life and the faint recollections and blurred images will become living memories. Z lecbca fion A keen intellect, a firmness tempered with kindness, and an honest recognition of the worth of each individual student, combine to make Miss Bremerman one of C, I-I, S, most outstanding teachers. In the thirteen years that she has been part of Chester High School, her devotion, inter- est, and guidance have been truly inspirational. We lovingly dedicate the 1954 edition of the Summit to you, Miss Bremerman, in the hope that you will add it to your treasure of memories 3 36164 of COI'lf2l'lf5 Administration . Faculty . Our hot lunch cooks are always on the job to provide the students of Chester High School with the best food at the lowest possible cost. Expert planning, skillful use of the culinary arts, a wide variety of selections, and a clean, wholesome environment make the cafeteria one of the most popular rooms in school. Y' Drivers' Education in the high school is the most scientific and success- ful traffic safety program yet established and we openly acknowledge its effectiveness in this particular way. Drivers' Education is one of the most important subjects in our school since it will be practiced by most of us for the rest of our lives. For most students Drivers' Education is their only chance to learn to drive, handle, and care for a car under trained supervisors. The course consists of classroom instructions and actual driving practice. At Chester High School all Sophomore students are required to enroll and participate in the Safety Education Program. Remon Motor Company of Chester furnishes a new Ford to be used each year. The school pays only the actual cost of maintenance of car. Compliments of PAUTLER'S I. G. A. Best Wishes from DIAL. SUPPLY COMPANY Frigidaire Appliances 70 the Air over station KSGM by Jerry March- enior NP - 1953 April 11, 1953 was a big day for the class of '53. It was then we boarded two large busses at Patton Junction, Missouri, and began a trip toward which we had planned for four years. We spent the first day riding through farmlands of Missouri, Tennessee, and Arkansas. The first night at Hotel Heidelberg in Jackson, Mississippi, was quite an experience. The hotel was host to high school bands from all over the state that night, and our boys found they really liked those Southern accents! Sunday we enjoyed lunch at the Old Spanish Fort outside Mobile, Alabama, and spent the afternoon visiting an aircraft carrier at Pensacola Naval Base. Then we sped on to Pensacola where we stayed two days at the beautiful San Carols Hotel and enjoyed sunning and swimming. Tuesday we took to the road again, back to Mobile through the famous Bankhead Tunnel and on to Bellingrath Gardens for two hours in a fairyland of plants and flowers. We spent the night at the Edgewater Gulf Hotel in Biloxi, Mississippi. Our first group dinner was held Tuesday evening at Friendship House. We all agreed that Southern food was tops! Later we took a twenty-two mile boat ride across Mississippi Sound. The water was a little rough, and some of us found that the life of a sailor was not for us. Positions at the rail were highly prized! Early Wednesday morning we headed for New Orleans. A guided tour of the city occupied our morning and the afternoon was spent shopping, sight seeing, or resting for the big night ahead. Evening activities began with our second group dinner at the historic Court of the Two Sisters, followed by dancing at L'Enfant's, and a midnight tour of the French Quarter. The evening was concluded with coffee and doughnuts at the famous Morning Call. The few remaining hours were spent at the DeSoto Hotel. Somewhat groggy from loss of sleep, we arrived in Baton Rouge Thursday morning. We toured and later had lunch in the Capitol built by Huey Long. Afternoon found us in Natchez, Mississippi, at Melrose, a famous ante-bellum home. We concluded the day with a visit to the famous battlefield at Vicksburg. Our third and last dinner together was enjoyed Thursday night at Hotel Vicksburg. Later the ballroom was placed at our disposal, and some stayed up and danced all night. Saturday morning found us, exhausted and happy, on our way to Chester. We all agreed that, for once, realization was better than anticipation, and that all the working, planning, and saving had been worth while.
