® 1} £ Summit 19 4D The “Pride of Southern Illinois, built in 1858, represents the beginning of education in Chester. Little did Miss Mollie Payne and her pupils, photographed in 1876, realize that this school would render service to children in 1940.

Three years later this school sent forth the first graduation class of the Chester High School.
