Phyllis Burkhart Reporter --- --- Sue Leonhardt Class History In September, 1951, thirty-eight confused fresh- men found their way to high school. The class had two parties under the sponsorship of Miss Bowen and Mr. Dilling. The class elected as their officers the following people: Todd Hathaway, president, Bill Leonhard, vice-president, Edythe Meyer, secre- tary, Sue Leonhardt, treasurer, and Phyllis Burkhart, reporter. A year later thirty-nine ambitious sophomores entered Chester. During the year we enjoyed two class' parties with Mrs. Lytle and Mr. Scribner as sponsors. The class chose as their officers the fol- lowing students: Noel Yordy, president, Darrel Graf- fis, vice-president, Catherine Gemmer, secretary, Todd Hathaway, treasurer, and Maurice Frieden, reporter. In 1953 thirty-two juniors entered school looking forward to a full year of numerous activities. Among these activities were our skating party, receiving our class rings, selling concessions at ballgames and the fish fry which proved to be a big success. In the spring the class worked together to put on our class play, Meet Corliss Archer. The class elected as their officers: Charles Zinsmeister, presi- dent, Iack Sleighter, vice-president, Norma Coning, secretary, Maurice Frieden, treasurer, and Sue Leonhardt, reporter. Our sponsors for that year were Mrs. Amiss and Mr. Mertz. At last in September of 1954, thirty faithful seniors trudged, tired but ready, to start an interesting year to end their high school career as the class of 1955. Being determined, new records were set. We pro- duced as a great success, The Adorable Imp, which was properly dressed by the stage curtains, a third of which was our share towards a gift for the school. Our officers were: Gary Iackson, president, Charles Zinsmeister, vice-president, Anita Bollinger, secretary, Phyllis Burkhart, treasurer, and Sue Leon- hardt, reporter. The Ravelings was started under the direction of two worthy advisors, Mrs. Amiss and Mr. Smith. The main money making projects of the year were magazine sales and the fish fry. Bacca- laureate, commencement and the long-awaited trip ended an eventful year. , 1 l1x ' M' 1 Congratulations From Your Hometown Newspaper THE NEWS JOURNAL CY' t v f t r 3 Q lr is 'L-,,.-. ,fl 6, . Sen im' Class Play The Adorable Imp Betty Lou Gordon who is seventeen must play the part ot an eleven year-old imp because her mother, Who is a pretty Widow, has told a Wealthy admirer she is only twentyenine. Poor Clint, who plays hte Irish cook, and Brian Barclay, the butler, are always in trouble with the Pickrells. Betty Lou makes things Worse gl! when she talls in love with Boss Waldron, the Pick- rell's grandson. Boss is already engaged to Imo- gene, but isn't really in love. Boss wants to tind his dream girl but he doesn't know her name Betty Lou hates Imogene and when she learns Imogene has a cat phobia, she really gives Imogene a hard time. Junior Class Play Seventeen Isflwfully Younfui There is always something happening at the Eliots. Perhaps it is because of the monkeyshines of Albert and his friend Thaddeus. More than likely, though, it's because of the Eliot sisters, Ian and Nicki. Ian, the tigress, is the beautiful but spoiled seventeen year-old daughterg and Nicki, the mouse, is sixteen and shy, definitely not in the race, as far as looks are concerned. In fact Nicki's never been popular. She has always danced with the most handsome boys in school, she's waltzed with the football heroes, she's had dates with all the boys - in her dreams. But it has never been a reality. All her life she has dreamed of going to beautiful places and having gobs of fun. All of this has just been in a make believe world - until her fairy god- mother arrives. She is Nicki's old friend and teacher, Miss Tilby, who has an amazing gift for cataloging Compliments of BRADY'S STORE FOR MEN North Manchester Indiana people and putting them exactly where they belong. Miss Tilby, who has watched Nicki since that first day in school, takes Nicki in hand, gives her several very important lessons - including a couple on spunk - and it's a very transformed Nicki that emerges . . . much to the chagrin of sister Ian who's always done all she can to stay ahead of Nicki. Nicki really creates a disturbance when she emerges into the new Nicki. Maybe her mousy ideas get her places after all. Junior Fish Fry The luniors had a very successful fish fry this year. They had the famous Akron Jonah Club to fry their fish. New records were set in total sales and net profit. Prophecy Class of 1955 Here it is, l970 The dream of the Class of 1955 is coming true The new all modern school tor Chester Township is now completed Let's follow Mr. Smith over to look over the new building. Even though he has retired he still has a keen interest in the activities in Chester Township. Coming in the drive, he stops to talk with Noel Yordy, the foreman of the construction crew. While he was talking, Keith Cook, the head janitor, stopped to tell Noel that they couldn't get any pressure in the boilers. Mr. Smith decided to go along while they investigated the trouble. As they were going in the door they bumped into Bobby Barker, the owner of the Barker Locker Plant. He had been there to give some advice about the bulk freezer for the hot lunch program. Mr. Smith decided to go upstairs so he stepped on the new escalators twhich had been suggested by Lucy Robinson as a time-saving devicel. As he walked down the hall he stopped to look at the hall picture of the Class of '55. He remembered seeing on his favorite television program last evening the world famous male quartet consisting of Maurice Frieden, Bill Leonhard, Ted Morford, and Gary Iacksong all graduates of the Class of '55. ln the picture, he also saw the picture of Norma Coning who is now making her l02ncl appearance in the Metropol- itan Opera Theater. Two children belonging to the former Sue Leonhardt came racing down the hall, almost running into Mr. Smith. During the excitement Mr. Smith caught his finger in a locker door and had to go to the office of the school nurse, Helen Penrod, for a bandaid. While he was sitting there talking over old times, Anita Bollinger, head ol the English department came in to see if Helen could look at the Baker children tchildren of the former Ann Reberl to see if they really had the measles. Mr. Smith walked into the office and began talking to Darrel Graffis. head bookkeeper. Darrel called to his atten- tion a notice which was on the bulletin board. Charles Zins- rrieister, county agriculture agent, had filed charges against Leo Iudy for planting too much corn on his 300 acre farm. The case was to be tried in Wabash County court by pro- secuting attorney, Rose Ann Bucher. Mr. Smith stood there thinking about the case when lim Myers, head mechanic of the school bus fleet, ran into the office to tell Principal, lack Sleighter, that Phyllis Rupley, driving a truck for Faurot's Grocery store, had just his Charles Miller's new school bus, lack invited Mr. Smith to have lunch in the school cafe- teria. Head cook, Marilyn Metzger, rushed past Mr, Smith to tell Iohn Clark, fruit and vegetable truck driver, that they needed more lettuce. Mr. Smith stopped in to see the new art room on the way back upstairs. Catherine Gemmer was tearing her hair out trying to teach some little first graders to use finger paints, After she dismissed the class, she invited Mr. Smith to go to the study hall for convocation Much to his surprise, there were brightly painted designs on each wall of the study hall. Who did the gaudy decorat- ing? None other than Edythe Meyer, of course. The speaker for the convocation was Shirley Krichbaum, who told about her world travels. She also said that while she was in Hollywood she stopped to see the hair stylist for all the movie stars, Barbara Elkins. Mr. Smith thought it was time for him to pick up his wife at the Strawberry Beauty Shop, owned and operated by lames Meyer. On the way to the beauty shop, Mr. Smith happened to think of one more errand that he was supposed to dog stop at the Public Service Company and pay his light bill. He was greeted by Phyllis Burkhart's friendly smile as he walked in the door. After picking up Mrs. Smith, the Smiths decided to stop by at the Hathaway Ford Sales. Todd Hathaway finally con- vinced Mr, Smith that a Ford was the best car on the road and sold him a red and white convertible. As the Smith's were cruising along in their new convert- ible, Mr. Smith thought over his experiences of the day and remembered the Class of '55 as one of the most successful classes that had ever graduated from Chester High School.
