WE SHOOK THE FAMILY TREE Hildegarde is desperately anxious for an attractive senior boy to ask her to the big school dance. She tries everything but nothing works. Finally, mother gets her a date with Freddie, the only boy in school who wears knickers. He ' s a swell guy, but those short pants make him the joke of the school. She pleads with father to Let her break the date but father says, No! To make matters worse Hildegarde has given the little neighbor girl father ' s love letters to put in mail boxes. That settles it. junior J lau MEET CORLISS ARCHER Corliss, so bored she could scream, feel everyone is in a rut, especially her boyfriend, Dexter. Corliss decides to make up a fake diary, not her actual dull life, but an imaginary existance that would curl anyone ' s hair. Her temperate father becomes a raving alcoholic and a wife beater. Dexter becomes a juvenile delinqunt. Snoopy Cousin Agnes comes for a visit. Cousin Agnes doesn ' t miss a trick — so she reads the fake diary. Now the fur flies. Period indicates end. In September, 1950, forty-two freshmen made their appearance in high school. The class had a skating party at Warsaw under the sponsorship of Mr. Ceroid Faudree and Mr. Dilling. The class elected as their officers the following people: Diane Landis, president; Don Brown, vice-president; Phyllis Bechtold, secretary; Max Frye, treasurer; and Norma Colclessor, reporter. The following year thirty-six ambitious looking sopho- mores entered Chester. During that year we enjoyed a bowling party held at Warsaw. The class chose as their officers the following students: Phyllis Bechtold, presi- dent; Ronnie Kreider, vice-president; Julia Pottenger, secretary; Beverly Schroll, treasurer; and Myrtle Rowe, reporter. Our sponsors were Mrs. Lytle and Mr. Scribner. In 1952, thirty-nine juniors entered school looking for- ward to the many activities that take place during the junior year. Among these many activities there were our class rings, class parties, selling at the ball games, and our fish fry on which we all worked together and made a big success. Then came our biggest event of the year, our class play, Beauty and the Beef. Our spon- sors for that year were Mrs. Van Camp and Mr. Mertz. The class elected as their officers for that year the fol- lowing: Jim Baker, president; Ronnie Kreider, vice- president; Diane Landis, secretai-y; Pat Burris, treasurer; and Patsy Walgamuth, reporter. In September, 1953, thirty-six hard striving students trudged wearily into Chester to end their high school years and make up the class of 1954. Through determi- nation and lots of hard work new records were set. Our magazine sales was our biggest money making project of all our high school activities. Behind the curtains, a third of which was our share towards a gift for the school, was produced the great play, We Shook The Famil.v Tree, which w as presented to the public on October 18, 1953. Our officers were Jim Baker, presi- dent; Jay Schilling, vice-president; Marilyn Flora, secre- tary; Diane Landis. treasurer; and Alice Alexander, reporter. In January the Seniors began striving for a great RAVELINGS, under the direction of Mrs. Van Camp and Mr. Smith. Our trip, our baccalaureate and our commencement ended an eventful vear. Ronnie Kreider, busi- ness manager; Mrs. Van Camp, advisor; Clarence Houser, edi- tor; Jerry Purdy, asso- ciate editor; and Mr. Smith, advisor. Compliments of HECKMAN BINDERY North Manchester ' BOUND TO PLEASE Indiana 53 tojjlteci Y _x aDau in the oLife of Aaion S mitii It was 1974 and Mr. Jason Smith arose from bed to start a completely average day. In fact, it was such an average day that Mr. Smith didn ' t stop to think that everything he did during the day was worked around some members of the glorious Chester Class of 1954. However, let us follow Mr. Smith and observe how this class effects his life. First, Mr. Smith was prepared a huge breakfast by his maid. Alice Alexander. Alice had married and proved to be a very good housewife. He was also served a huge glass of milk contributed by the Jerry Purdy Milk Haul- ing Company. After breakfast Mr. Smith jumped into his new Ford, designed by Dean Cox (incidentally, Dean was married and had four children) and went down to the Brown Baker Super Service Station to fill up with gas. As Mr. Smith continued down the highway he became involved in a traffic jam, caused by Marilyn and Ronnie Zimpel- man ' s huge house trailer. The Zimpelman ' s were moving to a different army base. Upon arrival at school Mr. Smith began his normal work. His first official act was to discipline the young children of Mrs. Beverly (Schroll) Slack and then he was able to attend to the other business at hand. Now the first task that confronted him was the plan- ning of the Chester Twp. football schedule. He made these arrangements through the aid of Mrs. Aileene (Allen) Baumgardner. wife of the famous football coach. It was then necessary for him to review the new chemistry- textbook written by Bob Messer, Bob Keaffaber and Dewight Ritenour. The first two authors were both from Purdue University while Ritenour was a professor at Ball State. When Mr. Smith completed the book review it was about 11:45 so he decided to go down to dinner with the fourth period study hall. Although he didn ' t realize it, he had three members of the Class of ' 54 to thank for his dinner. His beefsteak was furnished from the Ala- bama farm of Dick Bechtold (Dick began raising cows on a cotton farm in order to come up with softer meat); his vegetables came from the Snavely Truck Farm (formerly the Grossnickle Truck Farm); and his eggs were hand-picked from the Rhode Island Farm of Beulah Young. After dinner Mr. Smith found it necessary to interview two girls to replace his former secretary. Diane Landis. Diane left her job at Chester to become bookkeeper for the R. Kreider Corporation of Liberty Mills. However, he soon discovered that he knew both of the applicants. One was Patsy Walgamuth Geist (formerly of Geist Sons Corporation) and Gerry Coblentz (formerly of Coblentz Sons Store in Liberty Mills). Another job on Mr. Smith ' s schedule was to engage speakers for the Wednesday Convocation programs. Therefore he contacted many famous people such as: Reverend Richard Purdy of Dallas, Texas, (known as the preaching Texan), Dick Shanahan, the National Rodeo Champion, and Myrtle Rowe, star pitcher for the Fort Wayne Daisies. He also arranged for Admiral M. W. Frye of the U. S. Navy to give his lecture entitled My Voyage Down Eel River. Immediately after school, Mr. Smith took Mrs. Smith down town shopping. Their first stop was a dress shop owned by Marilee Baker and managed by Kay Bonam. Next they went to Morrisey ' s Men ' s Sto re (formerly Oppenheims) and were waited on by salesman Bob Kline. While in the store Mr. Smith ran into his old pupil, Clarence Houser, who had married Janet and was living in Luther, Indiana. Mrs. Smith then decided to go to the Anna Helvey and Carol Marshall Beauty Shop Incorporated, so Mr. Smith drove over to Laketon to have his hair cut (?) at the Don Vance Barber Shop. ■ With all the beauty operations completed, Mr. Smith discovered that he still had two more errands. The first one was buying some new equipment for the Chester Agriculture class from Dewayne Ritenoiu-, the manager of the New Farm Store in Tunker, and his final duty was to buy railroad tickets for the class of ' 74 to go to Wash- ington. . . - As he purchased the tickets from the agent, Frank Rowe of the Pennsylvania Railroad, he explained that he was anxious for the class to observe how Jay Schilling was getting along in his new job as President of the United States. Finally, after supper Mr. Smith turned to his only relaxation of the day. He turned on the radio and sat back to listen to Mike Leckrone direct his world famous band. It seems that Mike and his wife (the former Phyllis Bechtold) had formed this band from their own children. (They had 14 boys and 12 girls.) Nevertheless, Mr. Smith ' s busy day didn ' t seem to agree with him and he became rather ill. However, the Class of ' 54 was still in there pitching, because who should nurse him back to health but Julia Pottenger, R.N.: This just goes to prove the old adage, You can ' t keep a good class down.
