Our Future EDIE HAINLINE owned a very popular manicure and massage parlor. All the business men of Chester would come there for relief of muscular tension and to soothe their tired, aching feet. SHERILL SWANK was Edie's assistant and always found herself in great demand for her famous manicures and pedicures. LILA GLEE, an ambassador of good will, was a personal guest of Ho Chi Minh's. She succeeded in bringing about peace in Viet Nam by using her influential feminine charms. CHERYL KULPAS and NEOMA RUDE worked very diligently in their vineyard situated on the banks of Tiber Lake. Neoma stamped the grapes with her husband, Butch; and Cheryl tasted and tested the wine with her husband, Dennis. JIM JOHNSTON went to Hollywood and became a star overnight. He returned to Chester where he produced some movies with his famous wife Elizabeth Taylor. Unlike Frank Sinatra, Jim went for the older women. Next Kay saw many Herefords grazing near a rambling ranch house situated close to the Sweetgrass Hills. The owner of this rolling Hereford ranch was BOB DAFOE and his wife GAIL and their seven children. A magnificent heart-shaped building came into vision. This building was owned by MIKE LAIRD. The billboard reads, Mikey’s International Playboy Club, Exclusive. CHUCK DEERING just returned from a four-week hunting trip in Wyoming, and to the surprise of everyone, he brought back a big mother bear. NANCY STANDIFORD got married and made her home with her husband, Lyle, in Rudyard. She tried to keep busy by babysitting her neighbors' children. TYRONE ROCKMAN spent several months studying with the great Maharishe Mahesh Yogi in India. Tyrone returned to Chester as a Guru himself. People from all over the world came to Chester to meditate with the famous Ty Guru. ANN ELLWEIN owned the biggest horse ranch in the state of Montana. She made her ranch this big from her work-power, her ten kids and by selling her large, grade double-A eggs to the local Joplin Market. KAY DIEMERT owned and operated her own Lingerie Shop. She especially catered to ladies with problem figures and was well-known for designing padding for women who needed it and women who didn’t.

When The night of the Junior-Senior Banquet, Kay had the extraordinary ability of looking into the future. Ann asked her to foretell what the Class of '68 would be doing in the year 1988. In her vision she saw a large city called Chester. She could see a woman which turned out to be PAT LALUM working in the slums of Chester--Joplin. GARY HOCHBERGER, entangled in a maze of paper tape, was the new Depot Agent. Gary pushed the wrong button and his IBM machine went completely haywire. DENNIS ROMAIN was next to be seen as an astronaut- -he managed a rehabilitation center on the Moon for all the relocated Hippies from the planet Earth. LOREECE WILL owned and operated a Jiffy Car Wash located near the Chester High School, especially designed forthe convenience of allteachers-- it was always open 24 hours a day during the week of Halloween. Looking further into the future, Kay saw SUSAN YURMAN in the depths of Tiber Lake in a water capsule. Suz was an aqua-marine scientist spending most of her time studying the marine life of Tiber Lake. IRVA JEAN BROWN worked on the LBJ ranch in Texas, where she developed the biggest breed of beef cattle in the world by crossing an elephant with a Hereford. She was then known as the biggest bull shipper in the world. LARRY HANSON, then the well-known Reverend Hanson, gave sermons daily at the Holy Roller Church 27. His inspiring sermon for that day was, The Jolting Consequences of Drinking Pink 7-Up. RON GROSECLOSE worked as chief Forest Ranger at Haystack Butte, beside him was his charming little laas, BONNIE with their six or was it nine little Grosecloses. BOB HEMMER, lost in a maze of shapely figures, enjoyed his position as the new Math Professor at Chester Community College. MARY JO WOODS was Nixon's campaign manager. As you can guess Nixon was still trying for the Presidency, and as his right hand woman, Mar) Jo had a good chance for the presidency herself, for Nixon was nearly 70. HELEN AABERGE, the world's most famous Ballet Dancer, traveled the world over. She gained her fame from her gracefulness and nimbleness on her toes. WES JEPPESEN, one of the most unhappy members of the Senior Class of 1968, owned a huge sheep ranch in the Sweetgrass Hills until an oil field was discovered on his ranch. Oil was gushing up everywhere and it turned all his sheep black. ELAINE HARSTAD designed and created the most beautiful bird sanctuary in North America at Sanford Park. For her untiring efforts, Lady Bird Johnson rewarded Elaine with the task of carrying out Lady Bird's Beautification Program. GARY LAYTON, a very busy scientist, invented many things--some of his better known accomplishments were: He took the nicotine out of cigarettes, he took the slip out of banana peels, and he also succeeded in taking the stink out of the sewer lagoon in Chester. WAYNE WICKUM S dream came true for he was a famous architect. One of his greatest feats of architecture was the construction of a tall tower with a huge red apple on the very top, built in remembrance of his teachers of 1968. LOIS and SUSAN ANDERSON were honored with the well-paying, life-time job of keeping this apple polished. 20

Then In August, 1964, we the class of '68 entered the halls of CHS to begin our first year. We chose for leaders Dennis Romain, President; Bob Hemmer, Vice President, and Bonnie Laas, Secretary Treasurer; representing us in Student Council was Kay Diemert. Showing us the way were our advisors Mr. Schroer and Mr. Smith. We spent our spare time in the concession stands at football and basketball games. We proved ourselves worthy Freshmen by successfully defending ourselves against the Seniors at initiation. The next year we returned to our classes to find a few familiar faces missing. Gone from our class were Carol Boyer, Jim Keith, Kay Diemert, and Dawn Albright. But we gained Ken Kultgen and Gerry Beasley. Officers were: Larry Hanson, President; Cheryl Kulpas, Vice President; and Marge Symms, Secretary Treasurer. Voicing our opinions in Student Council was Bob Hemmer. Presiding over us were Mr. Nordwall and Mrs. Springer. Tragedy struck our class the last week of school when our beloved classmate, Ken Brady, was killed in an airplane accident. Our Junior year was filled with surprises and excitement. We lost a few of our classmates when Ken Kultgen, Bonnie Laas, Duffy McKelvey, Marge Symms, Bill Jacobson, and Gerry Beasley left. Two familiar faces returned when Kay Diemert and Jim Keith re-entered CHS. Leading us through this trying year were: Cheryl Kulpas, President; Larry Hanson, Vice President; and Gail Good, Secretary Treasurer. We chose for Student Council Representatives, Kay Diemert and Bob Hemmer. Keeping a watchful eye over us were Mr. Smith and Mrs. Spicher. We attempted being actors when we put on the play, A Feudin' Over Yonder, directed by Mr. Nordwall. Adding to the excitement was our trip to Helena to see the State Legislature, or at least that was the purpose of the trip. We enter- tained the Seniors at our Junior-Senior Banquet and presented them with a fabulous prom entitled Three Coins in a Fountain. Boy's State Delegates were Bob Hemmer and Ron Groseclose. To Girl’s State went Lila Glee with Cheryl Kulpas as alternate. We entered the last year of High School prepared for anything. Leading us through this last year are: Lila Glee, President; Ann Ellwein, Vice President; and Gail Good, Secretary Treasurer. Speaking our piece in Student Council are Kay Diemert, Ron Groseclose, and Bob Hemmer. Ruling over us are Mr. Krook, and Mr. Browning. Leaving us were Beverly Harden, Colleen Erickson, Arnie Woods, and Jim Keith. We gained back Bonnie Laas and a few new classmates. Among them are: Edie Hainline, Chuck Deering, and Bryce Rockman. We again turned actors under the able direction of Mr. Browning. The play, The Groom Said No, was a brilliant success. The Juniors honored us at the Junior-Senior Banquet and presented us with our last formal dance of our high school days at the Prom entitled Blue Hawaii. Our hearts are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a dear and beloved classmate, Jenny Keith. Life goes on, but we Seniors will truly miss her wonderful smile and great personality. We chose Pastel Yellow and Light Blue as our class colors with the Mum as our class flower. Our motto is With the Ropes of the Past we will ring the Bells of the Future. 22
