CLASS HISTORY Can you imagine! Twelve years, gone so quickly! Just now this realization of how fast time passes is beginning to dawn on the seniors of Chester High School as they begin preparations for graduation, college, and future homes and families of their own. How precious these years are to us now. For during that period of time, our whole lives re- volved around our school and its activities-class parties, exams, football games, and canteen dances. Will there ever be a time when they seem far distant and long ago? Maybe but now the memories are still fresh and real. For instance, I can remember clearly that September morn back in I946. It was the opening of the school term and all over Chester, children flocked to College Street, Foote Street, Dora Jones, Eureka and Gayle. In heaven knows how many other towns and states thousands of chil- dren were doing the same-some of whom were destined to become part of the Chester High School Senior Class of 1958. The majority of the children strode up the walks with assurance, looking haughtily down upon those kids timidly clutching their mother's hands as they were greeted by their first grade teachers. But it didn't take long for us to feel at home, and school became a natural part of our daily lives. How proud we were when we learned to read! What a thrill, when in the second grade, we were allowed to go read to the fifth grade classes-a most terrifying and wonderful experience. Yes, and I remember the day we entered junior high school. Unrealized to us then, the years had flown past, .and our childhood was gone. Actually the move from ele- mentary school to junior high wasn't a big one, since junior high was in the College Street School. For those of us al- ready attending there, it was just moving to another room, and for the ones from other schools. it was simply trans- ferring to another grammar school. But we never thought of that. After all, we were the oldest and most respected students in College Street School. Of course being big wheels had its drawbacks. Friends were parted and placed in different sections. The little and big recesses we were accustomed to were done away with and we had a five minute break in the morning and only one recess-at lunch time. But this only added to our prestige. Then came the crowning glory-changing classes. It was really confusing, and for a while, our teachers were plagued with having students in their classes at wrong times. Then came that wonderful day when we entered the high school building. No longer were we mere seventh-graders, tolerated, allowed to attend chapel and pep meetings, and once in a while getting our names in the school paper. Now we changed our classes by bells-and for every sub- ject! New things, like studyhalls, standing in a lunch line, and only one recess, became part of our daily lives. High school was just one wonderful, confusing madhouse, and we loved it. During our eighth grade year, we were able to sit in class and watch the new high school building going up across the street. Just then we were too proud of ourselves for attaining the prestige of the old building that we didn't think much about the day that we would graduate from that new structure. But in the May of that year we watched the last senior class ever to be graduated from that beloved old building. By the time we reached the ninth grade, the realization was beginning to dawn upon us that school was not a tor- ture inilicted by heartless parents and teachers, but a very necessary privilege for which we should be appreciative. Teachers became human beings Cand good friendsj and studying something that we did for knowledge rather than punishment. The class of 1958 was really growing up! In 1955 we became the youngest class in the senior high school building. Junior high had been confusing, but senior high was something else! All those different halls-every room lookedjust alike - we were forever getting in the wrong room. But we liked senior high. There were no bothersome stairs, and since the building was so big, you could change classes without fear of being knocked down or stepped upon. Thinking back, it seems as if every year gets better, and as I remember, it did. Being juniors really put us in the big time. It was thrilling to nominate candidates for the student council, and even more so to see our own class- mates filling some of these ofiices. We began at the start of school to plan for our moment of triumph-junior-senior. We were determined to make it the best yet Cas did every other classy. We really had a big time participating in the show and attending the dance, and no amount of scolding from our parents for staying out late could mar our won- derful evening. Another red letter day in our junior year was the day our rings arrived. Were we proud! We walked on clouds for weeks, for at last the long-awaited senior year was in sight. In June we shall become the fourth class to graduate from the new senior high building. We shall have behind us then, another junior-senior, a gay trip to our nation's capitol, and a wonderful and most precious collection of memories. In future years, it may be said that the class of ,58 did nothing spectacular-maybe so. We weren't last to graduate from the old building or the first to graduate from the new one, but we will leave our mark. For our class has had its share of honors and achievements, and if nothing else we can be remembered as a class that had its part in building the ever growing traditions of Chester High School.
