Actually for those who shoulder this responsibility, the task is anything but routine. Each senior class takes a special pride in putting out as attractive an annual as possible. We of the class of 1958 have worked very hard and painstakingly to record faithfully and realistically the life of our high school this, our senior year. We know that as you scan these pages, you may pos- sibly find errors, but we sincerely hope not. We also know that you will find much that will call to mind gayety, serious moments, sad ones, hard work, and the usual pauses in school routine for relaxation and fun. All these facts of our school life are on these pages, but there is much too, that we cannot record-those dreams, those ideals, those long long thoughts of youth that are a part of us all-things never expressed but never forgotten-memories that are woven in the warp and woof of our high school days. We hope this 1958 Cestrian will always keep those memories bright. lf in later years when each of us has gone his separate way and Chester High School associations are but a part of all that isfpast -then if this book can serve as a realistic tangible link of recall between that past and tomorrow, it will have served its purpose well. That is the hope of our staff-that the l958 Cestrian may be a golden bridge between today and the future for all of us. Sincerely, Martha Woods, Editor Johnny Huskins, Business Manager w 1' rf, .Hue fx1r4.,w .A QQQI DEDICATION A moment's time of appreciation, a thousand words of gratitude could never express the high regards that we as seniors have for our high school principal, Mr. Marion G. Pratt, who always has time to listen to our troubles and to give us a helping hand. In the six short years that he has been with us, he has dedicated his time and energy to promote the feeling of togetherness among the students and faculty of Chester High. in later years, as we look back on our high school days, many things may seem very vague and in the distance, but our memories of this man will always be bright and clear. Because of his continued support and faith in the young people of Chester, we, the graduating class of l958, do dedicate our Cestrian with love and appreciation to Mr. Marion G. Pratt. MR. MARION G. ADMINISTRATION STUDENTS AND PATRONS, CHESTER HIGH SCHOOL.. Today as we survey our educational problems, we are most keenly aware of changing trends and crises in our school world. Daily we hear criticisms of our schools, our methods of education, our so-called frills, and crip-courses offered as electives. Teachers have been lambasted as self- seeking, inefiicient people who really do not have quite enough to do. Many analyses have been made of this trend of critical comment directed against the public schools today. Much of it has been expressed by well meaning and interested citizens. Many of them have failed to get all the facts and the true conditions before they have formed their opinions. Some of the adverse criticism has been well de- served and should, in the final analysis, be very construc- tive. No form of public education is without ilaws, and always there will be differences of opinion as to ultimate values and the long term results obtained from those val- ues. You, as graduates of this high school, should know that out of the graduating class o 1955, forty-two percent went to college. Of this forty-two percent who went to college, ten per cent did not take college preparatory work and yet this forty-two per cent passed eighty-six per cent of the college courses taken. Of the class of l956, thirty- eight per cent went to college. In this class of 1956 some students enrolled in college who had not taken college preparatory work and which Chester High School did not recommend. Again this class passed eighty-six per cent of college courses taken. The national average of high school graduates attending college is thirty-three per cent. I would remind you that there are those of you who will not go to college who have received benefit from your public schools and considering the elfort many of you put forth, you are well prepared to become citizens of this community, state, and nation. If any of you will take time to turn back the pages of history of public schools in this state, as well as in the United States, you will tind that slowly, ponderously, and often times very ineptly our schools have grown to encom- pass the great American dream-that of a high school edu- cation for every American citizen. This ideal of mass education in our public schools has presented educators with infinite problems. Because of a lack of money, in- adequate facilities, over crowded classrooms, and teacher shortages, our public schools have had to compromise very often. Naturally this results in conditions that bring criticism. Mr. James Caldwell, Mr. Ben Wall, Mrs. Caroline M. Dawson, and Mr. Wilbur Runyan, our other four board members, relax for a moment during a meeting. CHANGES IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE OF SLOW GROWTH.. School officials, administrators, and teachers agree most whole heartedly that we need improvement in many fields. We are agreed on many points, some of which are: that the great majority of students should study more, that there are those who select the easiest road to graduation, that many of them engage in too many outside activities, that some students are perfectly satisfiedjust to pass. These conditions are prevalent in every high school today. The vital question is-What can we do about them? Two groups are as vitally concerned with solving the dif- ficulties as school officials and teachers. They are parents and students. These must work together whole heartedly with teachers if we are to improve the educational stand- ards of our schools. In the matter of hard, earnest study and adequate preparation for class work, parents can play a vital role. Together with the teacher, they can inspire, encourage, and show the keen special interest needed to motivate higher qualities of work. Public school changes are of slow growth. Only through gradual trial and error methods do we evolve new ideals and new standards in education. Our hope is that with today's many critical problems, we will be able to gradually approach our goal-that which is for the best interests of the individual student, that which will most help the in- dividual to face his own future with responsibility, with courage, and with faith. Let us go forward working to- gether, -teachers, pupil, parents-to improve our schools, to strengthen the weak places, and to make our schools a vital, secure foundation for peach of earth and for our way of life. Dr. W. J. Henry, member of the Chester County Board of Education pre- sents to Chester City Chairman Emeritus W. A. Conkill a handsome bronze plaque for his fifty years service to our schools. MR. MARION G. PRATT PRINCIPAL FACULTY It is with a great deal of pleasure that we present to you our faculty. Even though we constantly hear in these modern pro- gressive days that the students are of first importance always, we realize that a good faculty is the first essential for a good school. We students in Chester High feel that our faculty is second to none. Our teachers are specialized in their particular Helds and do their best to teach thoroughly, interestingly and enthusiastically. They are more than teachers to us. They are loyal friends and they are understanding. Many of the people whom you see on these pages have been with us for many years. They are in- valuable assets to our community and our civic and religious organizations. They go more than the second mile with us. Now of course, there are times when we feel that faculty members are rather dillicult hard-boiled problems-bent on having work done precisely and on time. And at times, too, we may not see eye to eye with them on all occasions. But given time to think things over the majority of us realize that these very stern qualities are requisites of our training. Who expects life to be the proverbial bed of roses. Our faculty tries to teach us that things worth while come only through hard honest work. We are proud that our teachers are people of high ideals, and they truly try to live up to the principles they teach. Just now this realization of how fast time passes is beginning to dawn on the seniors of Chester High School as they begin preparations for graduation, college, and future homes and families of their own. How precious these years are to us now. For during that period of time, our whole lives re- volved around our school and its activities-class parties, exams, football games, and canteen dances. Will there ever be a time when they seem far distant and long ago? Maybe but now the memories are still fresh and real. For instance, I can remember clearly that September morn back in I946. It was the opening of the school term and all over Chester, children flocked to College Street, Foote Street, Dora Jones, Eureka and Gayle. In heaven knows how many other towns and states thousands of chil- dren were doing the same-some of whom were destined to become part of the Chester High School Senior Class of 1958. The majority of the children strode up the walks with assurance, looking haughtily down upon those kids timidly clutching their mother's hands as they were greeted by their first grade teachers. But it didn't take long for us to feel at home, and school became a natural part of our daily lives. How proud we were when we learned to read! What a thrill, when in the second grade, we were allowed to go read to the fifth grade classes-a most terrifying and wonderful experience. Yes, and I remember the day we entered junior high school. Unrealized to us then, the years had flown past, .and our childhood was gone. Actually the move from ele- mentary school to junior high wasn't a big one, since junior high was in the College Street School. For those of us al- ready attending there, it was just moving to another room, and for the ones from other schools. it was simply trans- ferring to another grammar school. But we never thought of that. After all, we were the oldest and most respected students in College Street School. Of course being big wheels had its drawbacks. Friends were parted and placed in different sections. The little and big recesses we were accustomed to were done away with and we had a five minute break in the morning and only one recess-at lunch time. But this only added to our prestige. Then came the crowning glory-changing classes. It was really confusing, and for a while, our teachers were plagued with having students in their classes at wrong times. Then came that wonderful day when we entered the high school building. No longer were we mere seventh-graders, tolerated, allowed to attend chapel and pep meetings, and once in a while getting our names in the school paper. Now we changed our classes by bells-and for every sub- ject! New things, like studyhalls, standing in a lunch line, and only one recess, became part of our daily lives. High school was just one wonderful, confusing madhouse, and we loved it. During our eighth grade year, we were able to sit in class and watch the new high school building going up across the street. Just then we were too proud of ourselves for attaining the prestige of the old building that we didn't think much about the day that we would graduate from that new structure. But in the May of that year we watched the last senior class ever to be graduated from that beloved old building. By the time we reached the ninth grade, the realization was beginning to dawn upon us that school was not a tor- ture inilicted by heartless parents and teachers, but a very necessary privilege for which we should be appreciative. Teachers became human beings Cand good friendsj and studying something that we did for knowledge rather than punishment. The class of 1958 was really growing up! In 1955 we became the youngest class in the senior high school building. Junior high had been confusing, but senior high was something else! All those different halls-every room lookedjust alike - we were forever getting in the wrong room. But we liked senior high. There were no bothersome stairs, and since the building was so big, you could change classes without fear of being knocked down or stepped upon. Thinking back, it seems as if every year gets better, and as I remember, it did. Being juniors really put us in the big time. It was thrilling to nominate candidates for the student council, and even more so to see our own class- mates filling some of these ofiices. We began at the start of school to plan for our moment of triumph-junior-senior. We were determined to make it the best yet Cas did every other classy. We really had a big time participating in the show and attending the dance, and no amount of scolding from our parents for staying out late could mar our won- derful evening. Another red letter day in our junior year was the day our rings arrived. Were we proud! We walked on clouds for weeks, for at last the long-awaited senior year was in sight. In June we shall become the fourth class to graduate from the new senior high building. We shall have behind us then, another junior-senior, a gay trip to our nation's capitol, and a wonderful and most precious collection of memories. In future years, it may be said that the class of ,58 did nothing spectacular-maybe so. We weren't last to graduate from the old building or the first to graduate from the new one, but we will leave our mark. For our class has had its share of honors and achievements, and if nothing else we can be remembered as a class that had its part in building the ever growing traditions of Chester High School. We are also beginning work with the Chamber of Commerce to raise our tourist trade. The D.E. Club is striving, in its program of work, to produce better business men and women. The T 8: I, Trade and Industrial, Club is made up of stu- dents who take subjects pertaining to trade and industry. We have one meeting a month, on the third Thursday, and have guest speakers. This group, composed of students from grades ten through twelve, under the direction for Mrs. Catherine T. Under the leadership of coach R. E. Wilson the Cyclones played to a 4 win, 4 loss, 2 tie season. A number of firsts were recorded this year. The larg- est crowd ever to see a Cyclone game, since Wilson has been at Chester, turned out to see the Chester-Lancaster contest in spite of a driving rain. Lancaster defeated Chester for the first time in a number of years, Chester 7 - Lancaster 13. Also the shortest game in Wi1son's record was played-the one hour game with Newberry in which Chester sloshed to a 14 to 0 win on a Held covered with mud. In our wins Chester defeated Laurens in the opener 26-12, won over Clinton 25 to 0, scored a 26 to 0 win over Winnsboro, and in a game that had to be put oil to a later date, Chester won over Newberry, 14 - 0. In the two tie games, Chester tied a powerful Camden team 6 - 6. In the other tie, a weak Union team held Chester to a 19 to 19 score. Flu took its toll of other opponents. The game with Carlisle Military Academy was cancelled. The loss to Lancaster 7 to 13, to a powerful Green- wood team 0 to 14, to York 0 to 13, and to Gaffney 0 to 21, put the black marks on our record. Looking at the scorebook, the season may not seem too successful, but to the boys who played it was ex- ceedingly worthwhile. The character, sportsmanship, and leadership they developed outshines any record in any scorebook. Also considering our casualties and ill- ness, we think the '57 Red Cyclones had a good season, and we are proud of them. GIRLS' BASKETBALL MRS. SARA McLEMORE, Coach The 1957 runner-ups for the District Championship, Chester Highis Cyclonettes, have started off their 1958 season with a bang. They remain undefeated after meeting Iive opponents. Only three of last year's tirst stringers, Martha Woods, Becky Odom, and Barbara Hall are back, the Cyclonettes having lost three of last year's starters by way of graduation. However, a team that from year to year is regular at practice, attentive at games-even though on the bench- and enthusiastic in any point of view is always growing and learning baketball. Martha Woods and Sandy Wylie went ahead and ended as runner-up in doubles in the state finals. TENNIS BOYS' TEAM The boys, whose team was made up this year of one senior, one junior, and two freshmen, also stirred up a lot of trouble. Tommy and Jimmy Mann won their first singles matches. Billy Heath drew a bye in the first round, and lost in the second round. .Bill Gaston lost his first match.
