Throughout everyone's life new doors are opening to newer, brighter things. The doors of the several grammar schools in Chester opened to the present senior class just twelve years ago. Now the doors of a new, modern Chester High School have been opened to its first graduating class. An honor and a privilege it was to claim this right and the senior class is certainly grateful. As students in the great school of time, we are seeking new doors that must be opened, unknown knowledge that must be revealed. We remember many material things about our school life and yet there is something more. There reigns in our school a will and determination to do bigger and better things, not just to do what is asked of us but to go the second mile. We can never forget the warmth and fellowship of our days in Chester High School and what each of our friends has meant to us, thus we have attempted to record some of our most outstanding mo- ments in this, our CESTRIAN for l955. As the first senior class in a new building, may we continue to open new doors. Sincerely, Martin Banks, Editor Henry Samuels, Business Manager H EN RY SAMUELS MARTIN BANKS 5. f .1 3 9 YL . Cla A Ish to 9 COLORS Charcoal and Psnk FLOWER Red Rose MOTTO have crossed the bay the ocean hes before us An unusual vssst the other day from Father Tsme proved to be a very smportant milestone sn the hss tory of the sensor class at Chester Hsgh School In a rsde sn hss mythical tsme machsne the old man of numberless years revealed to the fascinated sensors many events that happened dursng our era sn the schools At a moment s notsce we sensors recalled and realszed the hsghlsghts of yesteryear From the very begsnnsng September I943-our class was destsned to make hsstory and that st dsd We cursously darkened grammar school portals that year as ssx year olds Isttle dsd we realsze that l2 years later we would graduate We began to learn by a slow and tedsous process the three R s and a recess tsme of course was our favorste Some of the stu dents were already developsng keen senses of humor and orsgsnalsty Who could forget the day when Bslly Melton sntroduced hss method of countsng to one hundred namely 99 cows and a bsg fat bull l0O Whsle all thss was gosng on natsonal hsstory was also playsng an smportant part sn our lsves Be fore we were sn the thsrd grade World War ll had ended and the snventson of the atomsc bomb had been deed was ksng Our class was not wholly together at first because st was separated snto the fsve grammar schools-Dora Jones College Street Foote Street Gayle and Eureka Competition sn sports events and other contests between us sn our respectsve schools was keen Eventually the snevstable was due to happen We were transplanted to the seventh grade at College Street To many of us st was a bsg thrsll as we forgot our differences and stepped snto the meltsng pot-a pot that dsd not care from whsch partscular grammar school we came-but perhaps the only masor change was that we were the bsggest grade we had ever seen I66 strong' However the most drastsc alteratson sn our hsstory occurred sn our promotson from the seventh to the esghth grade for then and there we changed from the one teacher routsne to several depart mental teachers Effervescent green and hopeful we unpacked for a 5 year stay sn the hsgh school busldsng-o moment towards whsch we all looked for ward But the year was not so easy for we had to learn the layout of the busldsng We had to become accustomed to the cafeterso lsne the bell system schedules assembly programs and other hsgh school trsvsaltses But by the end of the year we were quste adsusted to lsfe at Chester Hsgh and felt ourselves an sntegral part of the school In the nsnth grade we began to recesve unst credst for the requsred and electsve subsects we took We were steadsly advancsng up the tree of knowledge sn our studses Soon we began to partscspate sn the vars ous and sundry extra currscular actsvstses offered Then as sslly sophomores we welcomed our new prsncspal Mr Pratt to CHS as Mr Sneed advanced to supersntendent All along we were unconscsously acqusrsng that sntangsble trast called school spsrst It was evsdent as we played for the red and whste we swelled to strasns of mussc ssngsng sn the Msxed Chorus or Glee Clubs-as we represented the school sn Conventsons or snter Scholastic contests-as we read and supported the school paper-or as we looked carefully through the annuals over and over agasn Along came the sunsor year and we assumed our tstles of solly and we msght add busy sunsors Our eleventh year was sam packed wsth all ksnds of hap pensngs Fsrst was that hectsc magazine drsve con test We worked and worked for sunsor sensor all year long Fsnally st caught us starsng sn the face and we presented st wsth the Hst Parade motsf Of course st was proclosmed the best yet Dursng our sunsor year that wsld and wooly election was another Red Letter Day When all the whoopsng was over and everyone had gone to thesr homerooms to cast thesr ballots the long campasgn was over but we would never forget st Later on sn the spring the ful fsllment of a dream came about as we recesved those class rsngs But far and above all these happensngs was the busldsng of our new school Wsth anxsous eyes we watched the ultra modern structure go up across the street Then another summer and sure enough we assumed the role of the hsgh and msghty sensors we must now set the example for the other members of the crew of the Good Shsp C H S We could hardly belseve that our longstandsng tenure at Ches ter Hsgh was doomed to end next May As much as we hated to leave the school we dsd leave wsth dss tsnctson Our class was privileged to be the fsrst class to graduate from the handsome new school busldsng Our ranks had dwsndled considerably from the l66 sn the seventh grade to the 96 at graduation tsme Now Father Tsmes tsme machsne has run down as we have come to the end of our retrospectson and we travel along wsth the present Only the dsm dark future lses ahead We eagerly awast the sensor play the sensor trsp to Washsngton and commencement where we bsd farewell to our beloved school Thsngs seen and done dursng our fsve short full years at hsgh school would be too numerous to tell We realsze that we have completed the best years of our lsves and we understand that they have been SHORT years because they have been FULL ones full of the good thsngs that are the herstage of every Chester School graduate We have buslt up a Thesaurus of unfor gettable memorses memorses we shall hold near and dear to us forever No hsstory ss complete wsthout the character and growth of the sndsvsduals who make the hsstory Let us thus pause to pay trsbute to our teachers and school offscsals who gsve thesr lsves for our growth sn wssdom sn character and sn fellowshsp The crystal ball of the future says that many good thsngs are sn store for us ls there any wonder then that we go wsth sadness for the life we are leavsng behsnd but wsth brsght fearless antscspatson for the challenging to morrows7 Our only hope ss that the ones who follow us wsll never forget us as we shall never forget Ches ter Hsgh School and the people who make st what st ss today BOBBY LATHAN Hsstorsan . 9 4 0 0 o . . . . . . . . . . . Hanna, sponsor, and Miss Eleanor Patrick, business teacher. Presenta- tian of the charter and public installation of of- ficers were made in a chapel and radio program, in November, l952, Each charter member served on the program, as host, and on a project once during the year. Programs consist of devotions, business, business instruction and entertainment, field trips. Old toys were collected and fixed up to give to children who would not receive anything at Christ- mas. Those who completed 2V2 units by second semester were advanced from the assistant degree of bronze seal to supervisory degree and a silver seal was added to their membership card. Four members attended the fall state business meeting in Columbia and fifteen attended the state con- vention in Columbia i954-55. Pansy Lyles serves District V as secretary. The squad rose to the occasion again downing Easley l9-l3 and Camden 7-6 before the fateful York game in which the Chester squad bowed to its first de- feat O-2O. The Cyclones bounced back, however, to halt Union and Gaffney and 20-6 respectively, Parker then gave the Cyclones their last defeat of the season 7-2l in Greenville. The last three weeks of the season were marked with victories for the Cyclones as they lowered Sumter 2-O, Anderson 6-O and Winnsboro 25-l3. For the season the Cyclones closed with an 8-2-l record against a schedule that contained four double 'A' class schools against whom the Cyclones racked up a 2-l-l record, and as the season drew to an end, ten seniors sorrowfully left the field for the last time with the memory of a great season and many good times together, Left to Riqhti Buddv Grant, Assistant Manager: Tommy Grant, Assistant Manager: Bill 'Heavy' Helms, Manager. i 97 xs z '1-1 r- M Ai 11-1 XAAU Vzf 3, J I , 'i!.,' I E'.x'. , K sa Sw 1' Q Q., -D D c ,fag-, T 15' Q 1 X TONY BENSON Halfback Captain North South Shrrne Bowl Game South Carolina All State Most Valuable Player JERRY BEAM Guard W ff' HASKELL STRAIT WAYN E SU LLIVAN Tackle 1 BUTLER NANNEY Fullback Best Tackler 409912 BILLY MELTON Guard 'M Guard JERRY ODOM Tackle CARLISLE RODDEY Guard BOB WALL Guard Q, JAJQW CHARLTON BLAN KS U Most Valuable Substitute GUY Linebacker O fl , , 4, i-an Y - v I Sk , ' l..r4 M- ' ci ,,, ,, Z Q ,, Mt V43 A 3 it 7 A WM ,, , Q7 I 4 4 Y B ,B Q..
