Volume 71 Published by the Class of 1984 Chester High School Tenth and Barclay Street Chester, PA 19013 NATIONAL HOLIDAY — President Reagan signed a bill making Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a national holiday. GRENADA INVASION — American Troops, along with a multinational force, invaded the island of Grenada after a coup and successfully secured it. CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION — Fireworks exploded over the Brooklyn Bridge to mark the 100th birthday of the giant span. COMPUTER COMPLICATIONS — Matthew Broderick starred as David Lightman, a high school student who inadvertently hooks his home computer into the U.S. government's North American Defense Command computer in the movie hit War Games. TAKES CHAMPIONSHIP — Defending champion Martina Navratilova defeated Andrea Jaeger to win the Wimbledon Ladies' Singles Championship for the fourth time. AP WIDE WORLD PHOTO FINAL M'A’S'H — The final episode of M'A'S'H aired in February of 1983. Original cast is shown on the left and closing cast on the right. GOING APE — A 3.000- pound, eight-story high, vinyl King Kong clung to the Empire State Building in New York to commemorate the movie made 50 years ago. TOY CRAZE — Cabbage Patch Kids, complete with birth certificates and adoption papers, were hot items with holiday shoppers CUP GOES DOWN UNDER — The yacht Australia II became the first challenger to take the America’s Cup in 132 years, defeating the defender, Liberty.’’ THERE SHE IS—In September a Syracuse University coed, Vanessa Williams, was crowned Miss America for 1984. FLASHY MOVIE — Nineteen-year-old Jennifer Beals starred in the hit movie Flashdance and firmly established the torn sweat shirt as one of the year's fashion fads. Cheerleaders. All contestants were anxiously hoping that they would be crowned King Queen later that morning. The parade departed from the faculty parking lot at 8:30 and proceeded on 9th Street to Avenue of the States, thereupon returning to proceed to 7th Street. The entourage ventured up Lamokin Street at 7th to the Athletic Field, where our game with Chichester was scheduled to commence at 10:15. During half-time Gregory Goldsmith and Carrie Freeman were crowned King and Queen. It was a moment of joy and tears. Our 1983-1984 Homecoming Queen, Carrie is the captain of the hockey team and second vice president of Student Government. Gregory, our 1983-1984 Homecoming King, is a member of the band and Star Honors Program. Our King and Queen were chosen for their composition and interview, the number of votes they sold, and their academic excellence. All the studentsw who participated received trophies, roses, and acknowledgement for their efforts and were honored with a small reception after the game. Homecoming '84: From start to finish a day for royalty 6 To be Homecoming participants, stu- dents had to meet the following criteria. In their junior year they could not have had any F's or U's for a final grade, nor could they have had any suspension or excessive absences. Further, they had to be passing all classes to date; participate in class activities; and secure the approv- al of advisers, dean or counselor, and the signatures of three senior teachers. Last- ly, they had to write a short paragraph, Why I Would Like to Run for Home- coming King Queen. All in all. Homecoming was extremely memorable. In recognition, our 1982-3 PIAA-AAA Class State Basketball Champions Clippers received their Championship rings in the Clarence H. Roberts Auditorium on November 1, 1983. The ceremony included congratulatory speeches from Representative Robert Wright, Senator Clarence Bell, Mayor Joseph Battle, local minister Dr. Johnnie Monroe, and local businessman Earl Foster. Ths Master of Ceremonies was Rev. William “Rocky Brown. Our princiapl, Eugene E. Johnson, was presented with a House of Representatives Citation by Representative Wright, as were the coaches and team captain. Local business and religious community members purchased the rings for our champions. The rings were designed by the same firm which designed the Pittsburg Steeler and Philadelphia 76er's championship rings, Balfour, a company owned by Julius Erving, who may be better known as Dr. J. of the Philadelphia 76er's. Students were advised by Rev. Brown to “never let your body take you where your mind can't keep you and that yesterday's glamour and today's charm will never pay tomorrow's rent because only education teaches you to think and do for yourself . . . it teaches one to live and make a living. Smith, Superintendent of Schools M M O R Y Mrs. Duretta B. Carey was more than a counselor to this class. She was and should be remembered as being a mother, a friend, and most of all, a concerned human being. Not only did she counsel us about post school endeavors, she also counseled us whenever she had indication that we might be going astray. Yes, Mrs. Carey was always there. Her unfortunate death is a severe loss not only to the Class of 1984 but also to school. Mrs. Carey became her service in the Chester Upland School District in the 1950's when she taught science at Douglas Junior High School. Later she became a guidance counselor and was ours as we grew from freshmen into juniors. Her service went beyond the walls of the high school and she will be remembered in the community. One of the ways is through the Duretta Carey Paegant, which sponsored by the Daughters of Isis and the Shriners, social and community service groups. This pageant identifies and rewards talent in our community. The participants, most of whom are from Chester High, are judged in swim suit and evening gown competitions, on how well they answer questions, and on how well they dance, sing, or act. The winners receive award money, trophies, or $500 scholarships. Mrs. Carey started this pageant as a community promotions activity and it has been successful ever since. Michelle White M R S.
