Dr. Anthony N. lacono; to Mr. George Reigner, vice-principal of the lower school during our freshman and sophomore years; and to our class advisers, Mr. Raymond Hagy, Mrs. Gracie Jennings, Ms. Ruth Legette, and Mr. Stephen Wood. Leftmtwg Our musical director, Mr. Dallas Fitzsimmons, wrote and directed our May, 1979, production, ‘ Paul: A Free Man.1' The play told the story of the disciple Paul. It entertained the audience with songs, dances, and scenes of Paul's life before his conversion, and his ministry for the Lord. Some of the Class of '80 who were in the play were Jerome Belo, Caprise Clark, Karen Benson, Roberta Crew, Donna Davis, Pamela Gordon, Ernest Green, Vernita Johnson, Darryl McCants, Laurencia Redding, and Melba White. 8 Each May our high school plays host for a city wide art show. Art teachers from each school send samples of their students' work and create a dazzling array of styles, themes, and media. The art show of '79 was one of Chester’s very best. The weeklong show was loved and enjoyed by the many students, teachers, parents who strolled among the displays. There were pictures ranging from a boy and his dog sitting on the doorstep to a twenty-four inch drawing of the Superbowl X, when Dallas did the orange crush on Denver. There was even a cardboard record player with twelve inch speakers and album and a puppet show that entertained the elementary school students who came from all over the district. The excellence of 1979’s art show made it even harder for us to wait for 1980’s show. 9 GPtidto The pep rally began with cheers from both varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders, Michelle Merritt and Katrina Ringgold, captains of the hockey team. After that there was a selection from the band, under the direction of Ms. Claire Fitzpatrick. We then had to give honor to the soccer team in their absence because of an away game. The cheerleaders gave us two more cheers. Then the most important part: The introduction of the Chester Clippers with their C-pride attitude. The team was intro- duced by Captains Luther Roberts, Wendell Cherry and Kenny Rodes. It was a great crowd and the pep rally was fun to attend and a boost to the team. 10 A Sotuwtay FocthcM 13 RtCufcj Di . Awtiu) ty M. fctCO K , PiZ iCtf 6il 16 CWte i UpRcwuL Qckool! We become more ambitious and more eager to make these four years the most important of our formal schooling. We were to see that our years here would be most memorable and fhot our excellent leadership ond determination to succeed would set a lasting example thof the upcom- ing seniors would be proud to follow. We remember our freshman year for many things. Our doss officers were Trocy Robinson, president; Kim Womock, vice-president, Katrina Ringgold, secretory; ond Mary Etta Thomas, treasurer Also that yeor, our freshman trock team was undefeated. In our sophomore year. Armta Weathers was elected president. The other officers were Donno Bobo, vice-president, Adnene Willioms, secretary,- ond Kim Womock, treasurer That year our odvisers were Miss Evans and Mr Wood. In thot yeor, our doss talent began to show both academically and physically. We even roised money by sponsoring o coke bake and a doss trip. In our |unior yeor, Brian Brown was elected os our class president. Adriene Williams, Kortma Ringgold and Kim Womock were the other elected officers. Our odvisers were Mrs. Clork, Mss legette, Ms. Jennings, M. Hogy, Mr Savage, and M. Wood. Thot some year, to raise money, we held donees, hod coke bakes, ron candy sales ond presented the class ploy, along with our class trip. By the time we were seniors, we realized that the best woy to accomplish the things that we hod begun as freshmen was by working together. For this reason, we re-elected Brian Brown as president. Other officers were Etta Shavers. Adnene Willioms, ond Kim Womock. Still growing strong, we kept right on working We sponsored the Homecoming and Mr and Mss 1980 along with our cookie sale, dances, cake bakes, doss trip, and other fund- raising projects. Our athletes were recognized os some of the best m the state. For exam pie, on the football team there were Luther Roberts, Corl Lancaster, Corl Garnett, ond Troy Monroe with their outstanding plays thot helped leod us to victory. From the boys' trock team — with the obility to run faster than a speeding bullet — were Corl Lancaster, Terrence Pittman, ond Craig Ramey, lust to name a few. One of the outstanding members of the girls' hockey teom was Mchelle Mecnt. The outstanding basketball players were Brent Hog wood. Rolond Dale. Wolt Dixon, Robert Roberts, ond Borry Boynord Some of us will take our four years of training and enter industry; others will enter business; mony of us will go on to higher education before we enter the world ond make our mark The Class of 1980 has truly matured to the point at which we con become responsible ond productive members of society. During their season they had a sensational record. This record was good enough to carry them — for the first time in many years — to the champi- onship playoffs. The team put on a very good show and made all of us proud of them. 159 160 We all remember Ms. Jackson s study hall, Mrs. Harrison s term papers, the after school play rehearsal, the 9th period outside band practices, the fashions show rehearsals. They were all a part of preparing for the 80's. Some of us grumbled about all the time and work, but once we saw the play, read our friends' papers and saw all the other final products, we knew it was all worthwhile. We enter the 1980's trained and prepared. 163 The afternoon sun was clear and bright. The contestants and their escorts met at the High. Once the flowers were pinned on, pictures were taken of the contestants and then the escorts helped them onto the car hoods for the parade. The parade began on Ninth Street. Waving to everyone who lined the streets, the excited, beautiful contestants rode proudly. Once at the Athletic Field, the eighteen contestants and their escorts were shown to their seats by the varsity cheerleaders led by Genise McCready and Vanessa Doward. The homecoming game got under way with Chester confronting rival Interboro. The first half was exciting, with Chester leading at half time. With the Chester and Interboro teams in the locker rooms, the homecoming queen ceremonies began. 164 Tfe tty Uoo OtouutecL Queea Mr. Timinski introduced the contestants as they lined the field. First was Benita Showell, 1978 Homecoming Queen. Then came the announcement of the runners-up and winner: fourth runner-up, Robyn E. Brown, escorted by James Riley; third runner-up. Debora Savage, escorted by Daniel Pugh; second runner-up Joy Hill escorted by Harrison Potts, Jr.; and first runner- up Donna Bobo, escorted by Todd Ballard. Finally, the winner — Terry Moore, escorted by Barry Brunson. The second half began and turned out to be an exciting one. With Chester's fans rooting and cheering the players, the Clippers picked up where they left off. At the sound of the final gun, Chester had won, 27- 20! With Ms. Legette s and Mrs. Jennings’ thorough planning, the reception which followed the game was as beautiful as the day itself. The 1979 Homecoming, the parade, the game, the reception, and the dance are moments long to be remembered and cherished by the contestants and participants. Hats off to Ms. Legette, Mrs. Jennings, Mr. Timinski, and Dr. lacono for their roles in making it such a memorable day. Robyn Brown 166 167 On January 26, 1980, at the Holiday Inn in Essington, the Seniors had a semi-formal for the 1980 Mr. and Ms. 1980 contestants. At the height of the evening there was an elimination dance contest during which people wearing what Ms. legette announced had to leave the floor. There was good food, good times, and music. It was an enjoyable evening which will be fondly remembered by everyone who participated.
