To meet the needs of a student body of 1800, representing 22 na- tionalities, Chester High School offers 7 courses: college preparatory, general, commercial, industrial, industrial arts, music major, and home making. In addition to curricular training, the faculty, which numbers 90, stresses extra curricular activity, for this participation may become vocational as well as avocational. Because a great number of graduates enter industry, selection of the six plants used as backgrounds.for the theme of this 1942 Annual'' was made on the basis of the number of Chester High School graduates employed and the importance of the industry to the community and to the nation. Near the landing place of William Penn is the Penn Steel Castings Company. Manufacturing acid open hearth steel castings, Penn Steel is at present producing castings for government ships. Close to the site of America's first shipyard stands the Sun Ship- building and Dry Dock Company. Employment will soon run from 18,000 to 20,000 workers, with a ship launching every week. The Scott Paper Company is known throughout the country for its production of fine paper towels, toilet and facial tissues. In neighboring Marcus Hook is the Sinclair Refining Company, covering 273 acres. Facilities permit the filling of 125 trucks in one twenty-hour day and the loading of two tankers and two barges simultaneously. The American Viscose Corporation, manufacturers of Rayon, which came to this community in 1910, employs 2500 persons. Although founded in Pittsburgh in 1886, the Sun Oil Company, in its refining of petroleum, can boast of forty years in the borough. Thus, the following pages attempt to show preparation necessary for the proof of the theme, What Chester High School Makes, Makes Chester.
