Ynnrr £BtINGS cH£STE R fCFA r CA penn ST. To meet the needs of a student body of 1800, representing 22 na- tionalities, Chester High School offers 7 courses: college preparatory, general, commercial, industrial, industrial arts, music major, and home making. In addition to curricular training, the faculty, which numbers 90, stresses extra curricular activity, for this participation may become vocational as well as avocational. Because a great number of graduates enter industry, selection of the six plants used as backgrounds.for the theme of this 1942 Annual'' was made on the basis of the number of Chester High School graduates employed and the importance of the industry to the community and to the nation. Near the landing place of William Penn is the Penn Steel Castings Company. Manufacturing acid open hearth steel castings, Penn Steel is at present producing castings for government ships. Close to the site of America's first shipyard stands the Sun Ship- building and Dry Dock Company. Employment will soon run from 18,000 to 20,000 workers, with a ship launching every week. The Scott Paper Company is known throughout the country for its production of fine paper towels, toilet and facial tissues. In neighboring Marcus Hook is the Sinclair Refining Company, covering 273 acres. Facilities permit the filling of 125 trucks in one twenty-hour day and the loading of two tankers and two barges simultaneously. The American Viscose Corporation, manufacturers of Rayon, which came to this community in 1910, employs 2500 persons. Although founded in Pittsburgh in 1886, the Sun Oil Company, in its refining of petroleum, can boast of forty years in the borough. Thus, the following pages attempt to show preparation necessary for the proof of the theme, What Chester High School Makes, Makes Chester. r ■ • William S. Haney. '99. Academic. DEEPLY APPRECIATED in the Delaware County and the Pennsylvania Historical societies, as well as in classical music and travel. Her yearly custom of giving candy for perfect recitations on the day preceding the Christmas holidays has encouraged her pupils to hit the books harder in an effort to receive this treat. Reminiscing, Miss Jackson speaks warmly of her former students, a few of whom are fea- tured in the preceding pages: Pard Larkin, Watson Pedlow, Besse Howard, Mary Reagan, John Ogden, and Theodore Smithers. It is, therefore, with a feeling of pride, inter- mingled with reverence that we dedicate our yearbook to Miss Caroline M. Jackson. Because of the important part she has played in the educational development of Chester’s youth, the seniors proudly dedicate the 1942 Annual to Miss Caroline M. Jackson, herself an outstanding graduate of Chester High School, who returned to her Alma Mater as a teacher, and who has headed the social science department for the post thirtee i years. In September, Miss Jackson received the dis- tinguished service award presented yearly by the Rotary Club to a teacher of the Chester School System in recognition of her contributions to the community, civic and scholastic. A variety show, scenes of Mexico, a radio play, and a make-up demonstra- tion were the programs presented at the monthly meetings of the 300 members. The junior varsity, under Coaches Hanigan and Vermeychuk, completed a season which included a win over Collingdale; ties with Media and Penns- grove; and defeats at the hands of Ridley Town- ship, Swarthmore, Glen-Nor, and Eddystone. With Ellis Dwyer at the helm for the first time, assisted by Joe'' Green and Babe Buono, the Clippers completed a very successful season, win- ning four, tying two, and losing but one game to an inspired Media team, 13-0. After canceling games with Ridley Township and Lower Merion because of the paralysis epidemic, Chester opened the season with a hard fought 0-0 tie against Collingdale. The following games showed victories over Norristown, 27-13; Ridley Park, 19-0; Wilmington, 20-6; Abington, 6-0; and a 0-0 upset with Eddystone. Lettermen included Samuel Bagshaw, Harry Bal- o By far the most thrilling game of the year was Abington's 6-0 defeat in the last 30 seconds of play by a hard-fighting Chester team. Walt Creigh- ton took the honors of the day by carrying the ball 80 yards for the score, after Joe Pepe had blocked an attempted field goal and had lateraled to Creighton. By virtue of their outstanding work throughout the season, Walter Creighton received the Most Valuable Player award, which is presented yearly to a member of the Orange and Black, by the Lion's Club of Chester; and Joseph Pepe was elected to captain the 1942 squad. Pepe was also honored by being selected center for the All- Suburban second team. Captain Ray Pasternak, playing his third year of varsity competition, had the misfortune of being injured at midseason so that he could complete but three games. The Media Mustangs made it three Turkey Day victories in four years by catching the Clippers off stride and handing them their only setback, 13-0, before a large crowd of 5000 fans at P. M. C. stadium. Eddystone also managed to pull a mild upset when it held a superior Orange and Block team to a scoreless tie on a rain-drenched and mud-soaked gridiron that made ball handling and running al- most impossible. The remaining games saw the lightweight Clip- pers victorious over Ridley Park, 19-0, and Wil- mington, 20-6, with the second stringers providing much of the action in both tilts. Chester, according to Head Coach Dwyer and his assistants, Green and Buono, played its best game of the year against Norristown when it rolled over the highly touted Eisenhowers, 27-13, in impressive fashion. Pepe and Stalloni shared the spotlight with brilliant defensive playing. BOYS' VARSITY BASKETBALL Front row: Bonfitto, Wolonick. Monchin. Dehner; cocoptoms. Pecu.ch ond Dodds; Bartkow. Graham. Losing only to Norristown, they took Williamson Trade School, Abington, Upper Darby, and Lower Merion: placed second in the suburban meet, and fifth in district one. Letter- men were Captain Happy, Wharton, Fairchild, Cuprinslci, Komar, and Green. TRACK Because three veterans return, Coach Lange is anticipating outstanding performances from the relay team, which placed second in district one in 1941, thereby winning the right to run in the State Championships at State College. It will be difficult, however, to replace Walter Soroka, twice State shot-put champion. BASEBALL Prospects for another section two suburban baseball championship in Chester loom high. Five veteran stars, Walt Manchin, Tulio Bonfitto, Walt Creighton, Eddie Dodds, and William McAfee form the nucleus of Coach Ellis Dwyer's 42 team. Others who are seeing action are Drulyk, Dehner, Ballod, Klimchuk, Forrest, Cough- lin, and News. GOLF Coach Frank Stein's golf team is anticipating a fairly good season with the return of three experienced members: Fritz, D'lorio, and Armi- tage. Candidates are Loughead, Robinson, Welsh, Rutherford, Esthimer, McDowell, McElroy, Schmidt, manager Hagy. Section two league in- cludes Glen-Nor, Clifton Heights, Eddystone, Ridley Township, Collingdale, Chester. ON WINGS CHOIR MIXED CHORUS OF SONG Although music major is a standard four-year course in Chester High School, the eight music groups benefiting the community and school alike are not composed of pupils of this depart- ment alone. Any one of the student body is eligible for membership. The aim of the instruc- tors is to cultivate in the members a deeper ap- preciation for good music, to develop hidden talent, as well as to aid in vocational prepara- tion. Music major courses, however, are arranged to offer basic vocal and instrumental training, with a special course in arranging and conduct- ing, which is open to seniors. A variety of programs is presented by these musical organizations. On Tuesday, December 23, the Christmas Candle-light Service was held in the new gymnasium. The processional brought the girls' glee club, lighted tapers in hand, sing- ing Adeste Fidelis. Under the guidance of Miss Edna Mills, this group of 140, the largest of the musical clubs, gave The Christ Child, a can- tata in two parts. The fifty members of mixed chorus, who are selected from the boys' and girls' glee clubs, presented two selections: Today There Is Ring- ing and Jesus Is Born. The girls' choir, which sings at church and baccalaureate services, ac- companied by Gwendolyn Hamilton, gave The Shepherds' Christmas Song, How Far It Is to Bethlehem, and The Lord's Prayer. A transcription of The First Noel, conducted by Anthony Fusco, and Christmas Fantasy, by Berghe, with Alfred English conducting, were played by the concert orchestra. Members of the music organizations have the opportunity, also, of taking part in the South- eastern District and the All-State musical activi- ties. On December I I, five members of the girls' glee club: Gwendolyn Hamilton, Jane Desmond, Jane Eyre, Frances Gourdin, and Helen Curney, all sophomores, sang in the Southeastern District Chorus at Sharon Hill. From this group, Gwen- dolyn Hamilton and Jane Desmond were selected to participate in the All-State Chorus at Coates- ville on January 22, 23 and 24. SENIOR RHYTHM MAKERS Football gomes would not be complete with- out the band and majorettes, it is true, but these organizations, along with the dance orchestra and concert orchestra, play an important part in community affairs. The band and majorettes have been giving hometown draftees a cheerful send-off at the station before they depart for camps, and have been taking part in local parades. The dance orchestra plays for community fund, service, and industrial club meetings, as well as for informal school dances. For all assem- bly programs, the concert orchestra provides the music. An innovation this year, by the music clubs, was three spring concerts instead of the usual one. A band program, under the baton of Mr. Charles D. Long, supervisor of music, was given in the Smedley Junior High School auditorium on March 18; a choral festival, the first of its kind attempted by the music department; was held in the new vocational building on May 5, with Miss Edna Mills directing; and the final con- cert was undertaken by the orchestra and the band combined in the vocational building on June 2. Informal dances in the gymnasium fol- lowed the last two concerts. The band, featuring as guest soloist, Mary Tollin, a former music student of C. H. S., drew a large audience. Among its selections were the Star-Spangled Banner,1' Coronation March,' from The Prophet by Meyerbeer; In A Mon- astery Garden, Snowflakes, Happy Land- ings : The Traveller, by Buchtel; The Lost Chord, and Sousa's ever popular Semper Fidelis. Artistic and diversified was the Choral Festi- val. Members of mixed chorus sang The Bells of St. Mary's, Rhys-Heabert's arrangement of The Dance, from Gounod's Faust ; and Lane Wilson's waltz-song, Carmena. The choir pre- sented God Is A Spirit and Rest Thee On This Mossy Pillow. The boys' glee club, in their first major per- formance, proved favorites with Kentucky Babe and Stouthearted Men. The final num- ber was Richard Kountz's three-part cantata, Dawn of Spring, by the girls' glee club. Members of the conducting class played an important part in the final concert presented by the symphony orchestra, of which Leonard Taney is concert master and Mr. Lewis R. Zelley, direc- tor. Numbers included: Procession of the Sar- dar, from Caucasian Sketches Dance of the Apprentices, from Wagner’s Die Meister- singer ; and Dance of the Moorish Slaves, from Verdi's Aida. In addition to the experience of working on the yearbook, five staff members had the oppor- tunity to interview executives of the six outstanding industries featured on these pages. The interest and cooperation which these men extended has aided greatly in the publishing of the 1942 Annual. Heading the staff were Joseph Kormanicka, editor; Jen- nie Trush, associate editor; Beryl Leslie, personalia editor; Carolyn Bauer, business manager; Mildred Innis and Gloria McGuire, feature editors; Jane Smagala, secretary; with Miss Mary V. The walls are of buff-colored brick and hollow tile. All floors are of cement and steel, covered with tile. This edifice contrasts greatly with the main school building, an imposing structure of gray stone, erected in 1901, to which an addi- tion was made in 1919 because of the increasing student body. Vocational Building, main en- trance and Fulton Street side. VOCATIONAL STUDIES Chester's vocational building, constructed at the entire cost of $628,233, offers to the 800 pupils enrolled, industrial and industrial arts courses as majors for boys, with home- making and home-living courses for girls, under the super- vision of Mr. Frank Coulter and Miss Winona King. Boys may elect electricity, machinery, pattern-making, sheet-metal, woodworking, printing, and mechanical draw- ing. The program of industrial arts courses, now in operation, requires each ninth grade boy wishing to qualify for the vocational course to spend his freshman year in each of four shops. The school year is divided into four cycles of nine weeks, during which time the boys are placed, in turn, in the woodworking, the electrical, the machine, and the sheet-metal shops. Boys for the vocational course are selected on skill, effort, attitude, economy and responsibility in use of materials, grades, and results of aptitude tests. The home-making course is a two-year course. A special- ized phase of work may be selected. Choices include cloth- ing, its selection, construction, and care: nutrition, marketing, meal planning and preparation; child guidance and, care; personal and family relations. In the basement of the vocational building are the cafe- teria, accommodating 600 persons, and the welding shop, which has 36 booths for the purpose of training welders on a pre-employment basis for the Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. Meet Our Toolmakers. Theory and Practice from A to Z. Developing Desirable Draftsmen. Pots. Pans. Cookie-cutters! The boiler room, with one of the most modern heating systems available, and the boys' locker room are also in the basement. On the main floor, one finds the gymnasium, which can be divided into three sections so that three classes can be conducted at one time. It will seat 1400 on the floor, and in emergencies an assembly of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, numbering approximately 1600, can be held. Four shops are on the main floor: two machine shops, one pattern shop, and one general shop. The personnel of the last shop is composed of forty boys ranging from freshmen to seniors. These pupils receive all their training, academic as well as vocational, from one instructor. Because of present conditions, certain shops were not fully equipped until the latter part of the second semester, but this did not seriously interfere with the training of the bovs. On the second floor, facing the Seventh Street entrance, ere one pattern shop and one electric shop. Next is the men teachers’ room, and across the hall, the sheet-metal shop. Here, too, are the printing shop, and a movie projection room, which can be used for showing pictures in the gym- nasium. Along the center hall are a physics laboratory, a mechanical drawing room, and a blue print room. The third floor, devoted exclusively to the girls of the home-making department, houses equipment used in the modern home. Here are two cooking units with electric ranges and refrigerators, and the most attractive fiesta ware. In the sewing rooms are electric machines. On this floor also are lecture rooms for the purpose of instructing pupils in the theory of successful housekeeping.
