Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1980 volume:

We, the 1980 Flyer staff, would like to acknowledge this book in dedication to Henry Hohwieler for all his time and effort as a School Board member of the Chester Area High School for 39 years. With many thanks, we dedicate this year’s “Flyer” to you, “Heinie”. Endless Memories Endless Memories! As we look back through the years, we will never forget the endless memories of our high school years, especially those of school life, activities, school days, and ever-lasting friendships. Some of the debatable issues involved the Iranian Crisis, the 1980 election, inflation-including interest rates—and the increasing prices of gasoline, along with the special problems that farmers have always had to face. The 1980 Census was taken. Students were going to such movies as The Jerk , Star Trek , “10 , Electric Horseman , and Kramer vs Kramer . We were “Born to be Alive , and Ready for the 80's when we got into the music of a new decade. The crazy war antics of M A S H and the Dukes of Hazards , were tops among the comedy field; while Dallas , “White Shadow , and Trapper John , brought a variety of drama to the television field. It is our hope that the '80 Flyer will bring a new spirit to the new decade. Indeed, we will never forget our endless memories at Chester Area High School. Above: That @%$ g@ camera! Below: Another Brick in the Wall! I'm in my own world! (Below) This year's Junior class has devoted much of its time towards fund raising for the Junior-Senior Prom. Money was raised through activi- ties such as a B basketball tournament, and a class dance, while the major income was raised through magazine sales. The main event this year was the choosing of class rings. After patiently waiting for their arrival, we admired each ring and saw some go to that special sweet- heart. The class had alot of fun rehearsing and putting on the play titled, Everybody's Getting Married . In May the class went to work decorating the gym in different shades of blue for the Prom. 13 Sophomores Striving Towards Their Goal Kris Aldrich Brent Bargmann Ken Baumberger Steve Beck Becky Fedeler Pam Heibult Lyndon Hohwieler Pat Huntimer Tim Jensen Loren Lindholm Jane Mmnaert Ronda Mmnaert Gary Mohr Kristi Persing Randy Rath Jodi Reurink Paul Reurink Curt Scheafer Sandi Schoepf Dan Shaver 14 Class Officers: Mr. Main Advisor, Ronda Minnaert Sec -Treas , Brent Bargmann-St. Coun- cil Randy Rath Pres., Kris Aldrich V.-Pres., Miss Short Advisor. This year was a very busy year for the Chester Band. It started with the band appearing in Madison at the Trojan Days Parade, and then their annual Christmas Con- cert. The group attended the Solo and Ensemble contest in Sioux Falls as well as the Large Group contest in Madison. The Jazz Band was invited to compete in the Augustana College Jazz Festival, and received a 2nd out of 10 bands. They also won 1st place at the Large Group contest in Madison. The Jazz Band will also be featured at Chester's Diamond Jubilee. Pictured above: Chad Hohwieler- Drum Solo. The Chorus increased in size this year and also in stature. Two concerts were given with fine showings at both. The highlight of the year came at contest, when out of 10 entries we received 8 firsts and two seconds. Five vocal solos received firsts along with Miscellaneous Vocal Group (All State Quartet), Girls Vocal En- semble (Terry and Kristi), and Swing Choir. The two seconds were Madrigal and Miscellaneous Vocal Ensemble. The biggest thrill of the contest was when the Swing Choir received an ovation for the piece we did, Grease . All chorus members involved at contest worked very hard and their work paid off. Librarians Keep Books in Order This year we have two new librarians, Mrs. Franks and Mrs. Malthensen. They have filled our library with bright new ideas. The librarians and student assis- tants are kept busy keeping the library in order as they must know where the newspapers, books, and magazines are, as well as video cassettes. The student council organized the ac- tivities of Homecoming week, and spon- sored a Snow Ball Dance. They sold over one hundred Chester Flyer caps in a school spirit venture. This hard work- ing crew ran more concessions than any other group. With the money earned, plus donations from the high school classes, two speakers were bought for music and dances.
