M sate «HE i is-sa Enjoying Competing Learning Participating In memory of his many years of service as bus driver at Chester Area School, we the 1976 Flyer Staff would like to place this book in memoriam to Art Oltman. Belonging Spirit . . . Years ago our forefathers fought and strived for our country's Independence. Through good minds and great spirit they won the Independence. This is just like school in our last four years. First of all we have Spirit of Enjoying. Enjoyment is a big part of our life. Surely all of us will remember all the good times we had at Good Old CHS. Next we have the Spirit of participating. Participation is to show how we can take part in anything we strived for. Through competing we learned how to show good sportsmanship and the ability to take the bad days with the good ones. Spirit of learning shows how we can better ourselves and learn from the mistakes we make. Spirit of Belonging, we learn to get along with our classmates, teachers, and friends. As we finished our Senior year we look back on all the good times and the bad and realize that it wasn't as bad as we pretended it to be but rather a rewarding, pleasureable, experiencing four years for each and every one of us. Every day of the week something was done for this occasion. They were: Monday-Dress-up Day, Tuesday- Backwards Day, Wednesday-Red, White, and Blue Day, Thursday-Senior Respect Day, and Friday-Grub Day, Pep Rally, and in the afternoon there was a series of skits and a tug-of-war. All the teachers and classes, 7th through 12th participated in the tug-of- war. The juniors and Freshmen came out victorious most of the time. Every class got a chance to pull against the others. The teachers lost all of their battles. Coronation was held Thursday night. Don and Jackie, the 1974 Homecoming King and Queen were there to crown this years' royalty. Craig Peterson was crowned King, and Rita Baumberger was crowned Queen. The Chester Flyers played a very good game a against the Tri-Valley Mustangs even though we lost. The final score of the Homecoming game was 8-14. We were all very proud of them! Top: Queen Rita Baumberger and King Craig Peter- son. Trainbearers-Jodi Siemonsma and Johnny A Iverson. The setting was an outdoor cafe of the Old Mission Resort Motel and Health Resort. The play was all about criminals and their problems. The play was written by Donald R. Stieper and directed by Mr. Borchardt. The Seniors would again like to say thanks to Mr. Borchardt. A wench is. . . explained di- recter Mr. Borchardt. Chaos! Do you buy that Dale? You tell em Norm! Gertrude's mouth at work! And in conclusion. . . Jim's all tied up ! 5 We've Only just Begun—Sweetheart '76 On the 27th day of March the annual Sweetheart Dance sponsered by the FFA and FHA was held in the gymnasium. On the day before the dance the FFA and FHA members worked all day long to decorate the gym. Colors chosen were red, pink, and white. A large heart at the head of the gym accented the decorations. We've Only Just Begun was the theme that was in everyone's mind as thay danced to the great sounds of Dirty Eddie. Candidates chosen for Queen were Gail Burkard, Kay George, Paula Hass, and Connie Gaspar. The candidates for King were Stan Fods, Mark Acheson, Larry Anderson, and Alan Schaefer. The moment finally came for the 1976 Royalty to be announced. On April 8th and 9th the Junior Class presented, The Odds Are Against You , a three-act comedy. After many hours of practice the play turned out to be a real success and was enjoyed by many. A special thanks goes to Mr. Borchardt and Dare Limmer for helping get everything in order and directing a fun play. A proud director Can we help you Anyone for dancing lessons?!?! with those Emily?? Time Will Be Ours.. . Farewell Plans for Prom were started early by the Juniors in order to make it a memorable night for the Sr, Class, As it always is when decisions have to be made, there were many choices the class had to decide on. Several class meetings were held and many ideas were brought up. Committees were formed to get things in line. The decorating committee chose the prom colors: pastel yellow, green, pink, and blue. The food committee together with the cooks planned the delicious meal for the banquet. Everyone enjoyed salad, ham, baked potatoes, buttered corn, and strawberry trifle. The waiters and waitresses were Tom Minnaert, Kelly Brown, Dan Nugent, Kirk Keupp, Roxanne Groeneveld, Carla Lidel, Lisa Aldrich, and Joni Jones. These people did a professional job. A trellis was built and under it was a fountain punch bowl which accented the dreamy affect of the pastel colors scattered throughout the white. A silver ball was hung over the trellis and flickered bright lights on the dance floor. Welcome................... Sr. Response.............. Vocal Duet................ Wakefield 8 Governor Kneip Speaks at Graduation The important thing is this: to be able at any time to sacrifice what we are for what we could be- come. This was the motto for 34 graduating seniors. To go along with the bi- centennial, our colors were red, white, and blue with a red rose as our flower. On Baccalaureate, May 16, Father Raymond Mowry gave the services. To highlight our commence- ment, we had the Governor of South Dakota, Richard F. Kneip, as our guest speaker. We, the senior class of 1976, would like to leave behind our best wishes to all the under- classmen and our thanks to all who helped us. Under the direction of Miss Janet Bruns, the Chester Area High School Band led a very active year. As a money making project the members of A Band took a trip to the farm of Bill Daniel to pick up corn. Everyone worked hard and picked close to 100 bushels. On October 11th, the band traveled to Vermillion to march in the Dakota Day parade competition. Our Christmas concert was performed on December 22nd. Proud Heritage March, Christmas Music for Winds, Dedicatory Overture, and Sleigh Ride were among our numbers; with the finale being the Hallelujai Chorus performed with the choir. On March 21st, the band parents hosted a soup supper. The band played for everyone's entertainment and the night was a great success. On April 10th, we traveled to Madi- son to compete in the Large Group Ensemble contest. We performed Sinfonians March a and the Proud Heritage March, and represented Chester well. Along with our contest pieces, we carried out a Bicentennial theme in performing our Spring Concert. Light Your Way With FHA Tammy Hohwieler, Seated, is work- ing toward her Chapter Degree. This year the library received many new books so chances are if you were in the library you would have seen the librarians placing these new books on the shelves. For easy reference and use by the students, they must be well informed of the position of newspapers, books, magazines, and the vertical file. They are also in charge of making sure all items are checked in and out including the supplies. Mrs. Hilde receives alot of help from these student librarians with the big responsibility of keeping the library in order for all of the stu- dents, faculty and administration. Student Council The Student Council met several times to discuss matters concerning the high school activities. With the help and cooperation of the students, Mr. Reiff and the Student Council organized a student lounge for the enjoyment of the Juniors and Seniors. Also, for the first time this year, a Sadie Hawkins dance was set up by the council and paid for by the Senior Class. Other topics of discussion in- cluded allowing Seniors to take days off to visit colleges, and problems with student behavior. Student Council would like to thank Mr. Reiff for his advice and help. Underclassmen gained experience as only three seniors (Orrin Myers, Kalvin Olson and Chuck Buchheim) carried the leadership role. Senior quarter- back Mark Acheson suffered a knee injury in the first ball game and did not play again. The tough Big Sioux Conference schedule included games with the 1st and 3rd rated teams in the State. Although only 1-7 for a record it is felt that the young players have the potential to lead us to a good grid-iron showing next year. Underclassmen playing especially well included tight-end Doug Olson and sophomore half- back David Riedel. There were no returning starters to the 'B1 team from the previous year so they were really worked hard to build a ball team to be proud of. Jim Baumberger, leading scorer and rebounder, lead the team to a fairly successful year with a record of 7 wins and 9 losses. These bombers will be something to watch for in years to come. When October 21st came around, so did time for the local Oral Interpretation contest. 14 girls participated and those taking top honors were: Paula Hass, Kim Augustad, Beth Van Dam, and Rosanne Groeneveld. The girls that worked hard on their selections but were unable to qualify for the Districts had just as much fun working at the contest as Chester hosted the District Oral Interpretation contest on October 30th. Those who worked as guides were Penny Persing, Dianna Hefner, Kim Pederson, and Teresa Sterling Referees were Mrs. Teagarden, Mrs. Stubbe, and Miss Borchardt. Runners were Tammy Hohwieler, Sandy Minnaert, and Connie Gaspar. The hard work paid off as Roxanne Groeneveld came away with 3rd place honors. Paula Hass and Kim Augustad received excellents and Beth Van Dam received a good. Judges for the contest were Mary Ellen Wagner, DSC; Clara Chisholm Lee, Augustana; and Mike Schliessmann, SDSU. A good effort was put forth and the contest was a great success. 34 Roxanne Groeneveld Poetry Bette Hohwieler-Business Manager Administration Keeps Close Watch Superintendent Principal Arnold Wold Robert Reiff Marilou IMielsen-Secretary SCHOOL BOARD: Bette Hohwieler-Business Manager, Arnold Wold-Superintendent, Ron Minnaert, Mike Gaspar, Henry Hohwieler-President of Board, Eugene Hemminqson, Elmer Beeck, Lyle Schaefer, and Bud Gerry. Our year started off with magazine sales. Team captains were chosen to collect the money and encourage the sales. We were given two weeks to sell all of the magazines we could. The students spent many hours out selling the magazines and brought in good re- sults. Our class sold 2,224.67 dollars worth of magazines. We felt very proud of the success and the money received back from the company was put towards Prom expenses. As the year progressed the juniors became enthused about their long awaited class rings. They arrived in many different shapes and colors. All in all the juniors were well pleased and very proud of their class rings. Shirley Beck This year the sophomore class took a couple of field trips associated with Biology. At the beginning of the year we packed up one morning at school and headed the troop to Camden Woods. After a long hike back into the Woods we observed the trees and the position of their leaves and growth of mosses. Some of the boys waded in the stream and caught a fish with their hands. After a full day of hiking and studying, and just plain old tearing around I guess we were all pretty glad to see good ol1 Chester. Going to the State Hospital was another one of the field trips the sophomores went on later in the year. We spent the whole day touring the grounds and the wards. It was really worth it, was the comment made by the group upon returning to Chester that night. I bet most of the sophomores hope that next year will be as interesting as our sophomore year in 76. Beth Van Dam Oh the things we can find in frogs! This seemed to be the general com- plaint among the class when we dissected the cold-blooded creatures. I never saw so many happy people as when we were told to throw those varmints away. Luck seemed to be against us because the bus stalled and we were one half hour late. After en- joying the rest of the play we began our journey home and were stranded for 45 minutes in a blizzard when help finally arrived. The Freshman class had fun presenting Romeo and Juliet as a class project. Smile—You're on Dare's Camera Above: If you can't beat 'em-join 'em Below: Who said the sky was falling!!!
