Presenting The 1974 Flyer Chester Area High School Chester, South Dakota Remember When. . . • • .Jackie didn't want her picture taken? . . .everyone on annual staff worked this hard? I WILL REMEMBER WELL. . . . 3-34 School Life......................3-8 Activities (Organizations) .... 9-16 Athletics.......................17-28 Academics.......................29-34 FRIENDS, I WILL REMEMBER YOU . . 35-59 School Board...................... 36 Faculty.........................37-39 Staff............................. 40 Students........................41-59 . . .Janie and Daryce performed the Grand Finale at the gymnas- tics demonstration? . • .the Government Issue entertained us? . . .classes were this easy? • . .Sandy played the nurse and Deb played Juliet in Freshman English? . . .Janet and Barb played The Farmer in the Dell with the ABC kiddies? Remember. . .each and everyone of us has something we will carry with us out of Chester High School. Maybe it will be the memory of our class plays. The Seniors presented Take Your Medi- cine and the Juniors gave Head'in for the Hill's. How could anyone forget opening night jitters? Then saying after it was all over, After I got out on stage I wasn't scared at all, it was fun! I'm sure Homecoming will long be remembered and talked about. The Seniors spent the day of Homecoming decorating the gym around the theme Autumn Leaves. Silent Majority from Madison played at the dance. The only complaint anyone had about Homecoming was that it rained so hard all day and night. The Prom and Banquet was looked forward to with excitement by all of the Juniors and Seniors and turned out as wonderful as all of them dreamed it would be. After being served a delicious supper, they danced to the music of Transamerica, in the gym decorated in green, orange, yellow, and white around the theme Season's in the Sun. The students of C.H.S. will also remember the serious problems our government faced. First there was the turmoil which the Watergate break- in caused. Watergate brought many questions and accusations against President Nixon. Another problem our nation faced was that of the oil and gas shortages. Opinions were divided on whether the long lines at the gas stations and the high price of gasoline was brought on by a gas shortage or by the oil companies themselves. As the school year drew to a close all of us had our own special mem- ories we took with us and our own special dreams. To all of you we the 1973-74 annual staff wish that all of your fondest dreams come true. 4 2 King Pat and Queen Darcy Homecoming 1973 Coronation was held on Sept. 27, 1973. It started off with a powder-puff football game, with the Juniors defeating the Seniors. That night the Juniors and Sophomores presented their skits, the Seniors girls then sang Dawning . After the skits and the singing, Darcy Kock was crowned queen and Pat Baumberger was crowned king. The queen candidates were Donna Tollefson, Rose George, and Julie Kroger. The king candidates were Craig Lidel, Jim Groeneveld, and Jay Van Liere. When the crowning was over everyone went out for the traditional bonfire, pep rally, and snake dance. The following day was Homecoming and it began with a pep rally at 3:15. The football game was very exciting with two overtimes, with the Chester Flyers defeating the Tri- Valley Mustangs 20-14. After the game everyone was ready for the dance which started at 9:30 and ended at 12:00. The Silent Majority was enjoyed by all. Homecoming was a com- plete success! King Candidates - Jay V. L., Jim G., CraigL., Pat B. crowned king; train bearer Brian Borchardt. Train bearer Julie Baumberger; Queen Candidates - Darcy K. being crowned by Jane Muth, Donna T., Rose G., Julie K. The skit Football Jones was presented by the Junior class. The Sophomores presented a Charlie Brown skit. Gale Swier punts the football, while the Tri-Valley Mustangs attempted to defeat us. 4 “Take Your Medicine This will make you feel better! Dress him nurses! Temperchure! Some of the junior high activities during the year in- cluded a Halloween costume party sponsored by the 8th FHA. A best costume contest highlighted the evening with Luann Minnaert and Paul Gaspar as the winners. A strange thing about this party was that the girls came dressed as boys and the boys came dressed as girls. Later on in the year they also had a Christmas party, which consisted of a sock hop and games in the gym. Thirty-eight junior high students expressed their tal- ents in declam. They com- peted in humorous, dramatic, poetry and oratory in a con- test held April 9th. Eight of these people represented Chester at Harrisburg on Apri I 18th. The Junior High FHA also sponsored a Mother- Daughter Tea. Some of the activities involved were skits and a style show.
