THE MAROON Respectfully and in fitting tribute, we, the Seniors of 56 dedicate this annual to Reverend Paul Shor- nack, who has devoted unselfishly a life time of work for our community. The fruits of his labor will continue to ripen long after he has gone to that city, not made with hands, eternal in the heavens - for he has labored, but not in vain. For ourselves and the classes of the past years, we wish to express appreciation for the many things that he has done for our community and school - yes, from the first sacraments of Bap- tism to the final rites of rest. We were Roger Bervin, Mary Ann Framness, Jon Larson, Martha Larson, Bonnie Magness, Gerald Richardson, Lowell Owens, Donald Simonsen, and Jim Tweet. Carol Kirk came in during the middle of the second grade. Our teacher for these first two grades was Miss Crimmins. We stayed the same during the third grade; but in the fourth grade, we had two additions and one loss; we gained June Kampmeyer and Jerauld Sterud and we lost Carol Kirk. Miss Verlyn Henrich was our teacher in the third and fourth grades. In the fifth grade Peter Stegenga came and our teacher was Miss Coomes. We lost Mary Ann Framness that year. In the sixth grade Carol Kirk rejoined the scamps in their travels. We had the same teacher for that year. We remained the same during the seventh and eighth grades. Our teacher for these two years was Miss Pederson. We entered Chester High School on September 7, 1952 with all of these gains and losses. We started our Freshman year with a grand total of nineteen. We enrolled for the first year with the following members: Joyce Schuldt and Martha Larson from the Rudd School; Lois Abraham, Milton Abraham, Ronnie Rentz, Ann Warns, Donald Kwallek, Carolyn Kaske, and Kenneth Kwallek from Wentworth; and Gloria and Kenneth Lottman from Dell Rapids, and the former members from Chester grade school. The upper classmen gave a skating party in our honor, and all took part in activities even though we were called the “green Freshies' . Miss Currier was our advisor. As “Sophs' we lost many students-Gloria and Kenneth Lottman, Kenneth Kwallek, Donald Simon- son, and Carolyn Kaske. We gained Jackie and Marilyn Holland and Russell Malthesen. Mr. Far- rand was our advisor this year. In our Junior year we lost Jackie and Marilyn Holland but we gained Tom Leisinger. We par- ticipated in many activities which included working on the carnival and our play, “Pleased to Meet- cha . It was a great success and had a large turn out. Our Junior-Senior Banquet was the grand- est occasion of all, the theme was “Twilight in Tulip Land. We did a lot of work and, of course, had a lot of fun. Mrs. Gaspar and Mr. Ziegler were our advisors. Now that we are Seniors, we still have a grand total of nineteen. This year we lost Lowell Owens and Roger Bervin, and we gained Edna Olson and Eugene Kiel. During this year we have participated in the Homecoming and in the Senior play. We also worked on the school annual and the school paper. Those who have spent all the twelve years at Chester Consolidated School are Bonnie Magness, Jim Tweet, Jon Larson, and Gerald Richardson. 3 MILTON ABRAHAM Basketball 123 Football 1234 Track 23 FFA 14 Grade Coach 4 Homecoming Att 4 Junior Play 3 Senior Play 4 C Club 1234 LOIS ABRAHAM Mixed Chorus 4 Glee Club 4 G.A.A. 123 F.H.A. 1234 Homecoming Att. 4 Class Officer 4 Band 1234 Annual Staff 4 Paper Staff 34 Senior Play 4 Saxophone Quartet 23 Junior Play 3 JUNE KAMPMEYER F.H.A. 1234 Glee Club 1234 Class Officer 234 Band 1234 Paper Staff 34 G.A.A. 123 Sextette 4 Mixed Chorus 4 Homecoming Att. 4 Instrumental Solo 1234 Junior Play 3 Senior Play 4 Chee rleader 3 F.H.A. The Chester Maroons had an up and down season for 1955-56 and ended with a 12 won and l6lost record. With seven lettermen in the line-up the Maroons lost their opener against the Flandreau In- dians and then won three games before dropping their next one. A middle season slump kept the re- cord below 500%, but the Maroons closed strong winning six of their last nine regular season games. The Maroons defeated Trent in their first District tourney game, then ran into a little tough luck anddropped their first two games to Franklin 62-53 and Dell Rapids 75-51. Tourneys seemed to be a jinx for the Maroons. In Beadle's invitational they dropped a one-point game to Colton and then were run over by Beadle on the Consolation. At the Chester tourney Chester also dropped their first game to Strandburg but came back to take consolation honors by edging Hart- ford 50-49. The Maroons played same very good games but had some very off nights also. They defeated Frank- lin, Colton, and Colman in some of their best games. They ended up in 4th place in both the Sioux Valley and Lake County conference although winning some games that didn't count in the standings. Ron Rentz and Jon Larson, senior Co-captains, led the team in scoring with Ron Rentz getting 446 points and Jon Larson getting 358. Other seniors on the squad were Jim Tweet, Jerauld Sterud, and Bud Malthesen. The following is the schedule and statistics for the 1955-56 season.
