MSNFY s Q, xg it aft:-I' xii lt: E X 533 'wi This year's Cheshire High School field hockey team ended the 1987 season with an impressive 16-1-2 record, including post-season play The girls tied and lost to Branford during the regular season to surrender the Housy title, but emerged victorious in a hard fought battle when they faced them again in the State Finals to become Class L State Champions. The Rams' offense was powered by Eleanor Stone who led the team and state in scoring with 31 goals. Many of these goals are attributed to Moreen Hogan who led the team in assists with 12 and added 7 goals. Barbara Davis and Heather Johnson also made valuable contributions on offense. Midfielders Debbie Hochheiser, Nancy Hav- lick, Iustine McGeary and Kristin Perrotti set up key plays throughout the season. Dominating the back line were Kim Rossi, Maura Cull, and Meredith Jennings, who made an outstanding 7 saves as a defensive back. Goalie Sara Humpage recorded a .914 save percentage and 11 shutouts during her first year in the cage. As the result of a successful season Eleanor, Meredith, Debbie, and Moreen were All-Housatonic League selec- tions. Eleanor and Meredith were also chosen for the All-State team, while Eleanor went on to earn the distin- guished honor of being named a Penn Monto All- American. The LV team was captained by seniors Leah Gardinier and Shannon Rising. The seniors leave this team having achieved the num- ber one ranking in the state, as last year's seniors had wished, and hopes that next year's team will do the same. GO BANANAS! Sports!153

Despite several injuries and an offense that was ineffective at times, the Rams were able to hold their own in the perrenially competitive Housa- tonic League. The Rams offensive ground game was powerful, running behind a front five that weighed in at better than a ton. The offensive unit came into their own toward the end of the season when they began running the option which uti- lized their talent most efficiently Defense was one of the Ram's bright spots this season. On the average they allowed less than 13 points per game. The hard hitting 5-2 defense re- corded 2 shut outs, something the Rams were not able to do once in '86, Although there were many disappointments for the Ram's Varsity Football team in 1987, there were equally as many thrills, from the destruction of Lyman Hall at night, at home, to the come from behind victory in the final minute of play on Thanksgiving Day Sports I 155
