We have always turned to the aid of our Class Advisor. He has given both his guid- ance and energy to help our class become a success. For this reason the Class of 1967 is proud to dedi- cate it's yearbook to Mr. Fred Willetts. We will always remember you in the years to come for your willingness and patience put into our class. Because of your unsellishness and time given to keep our class going, we dedicate our year- book to you, Mr. Fred Willetts. sm. f, 1 N ,slut-xnnw Dr. John Thorp 4 In Appreciation Few people have the opportunity to truly serve his fellow man and fewer still have done as good a job in his life work as Dr. john H. Thorp. When he came to Cheshire twenty-two years ago there was one elementary school serving the entire town. Since that time he has seen the school population rise to over four thousand, built four elementary schools, a junior high school and the senior high school. He has developed a strong curriculum and has stead-fastly worked toward quality education for the town. Therefore, it is with pride that we, the Class of 1967, as representatives of all the students both past and future who have benefited and will benefit from this man's life work, express our gratitude and wish him good luck and good health in his retirement years. Dr. Stephen August 5 Mr. Richard Haussman by thx Q8 ff' .. , ' -niuuldivlf Robert Mischler Principal's To the Class of 1967: The springtime of your life is over-life's summer with it's challenges and responsibilities are ahead, and most of you are indeed wondering if you will be able to stand up to this complex confusing life of the twentieth century. This apprehension is understandable but in reality it has been felt by every generation before you, in every society in the world. The Nordic seamen of the 14th century, the Greek youth of the times of Spartan and Athenian supremacy, the recruits of Caesar's legions, the Berber tribesmen, the Incas of Central America and many more stood on the threshold of life's re- sponsibilities and wondered if they would make it , if they were prepared for the demands of their times. The answer to this rests with several factors: how strong the individual is, how carefully the preceding generation has prepared the succeeding one, how in- 6 Message dividuals or their society has profited by a knowledge of the ingredients of both success and failure, how the individual understands his position in the society. The Legions of Caesar were successful because they eminently reflected the social order of their times, the advanced society of the Incas disintegrated when a new culture was thrust upon them and their own had not developed the ability to understand people with different drives and a different philosophy. So you stand as citizens of the most powerful na- tion on the earth with a grave responsibility: to know and understand not only yourself but your society and to conduct your life in light of that knowledge. If you are to succeed, this understanding is of vital necessity, to fail to search for that knowledge is to miss the very meaning and purpose of life. For some it is a time to start out on their own. For others, it is merely the beginning of even more education. But for all it is the end of a beginning. I.et's stop for a moment and reflect. Consider how cooper- ative our class has been when faced with an obstacle. We turned proms into memorable occasions, magazine drives into record breakers, and plays into profit-makers. We took trage- dies bravely. We produced powerful sports teams. We put stu- dents in some of the best colleges in the nation. Yes, stop and reflect' in our past accomplishments, but don't stop for good. Our graduation is the end of one phase, but only the end of the beginning of out lives. It is time to get out into the world and put to use what we have learned. We are fortunate to have the honor to be called the 1967 graduates of an excellent high school. Sec- ond Row: Vice- President -jon Holt, President- Paul Swern. Class History Try to remember how things were back in 1963. Remember? We were all freshmen then. Young and naive ninth graders try- ing to grope through the halls of C.H.S. We can't recall much of our freshman year, except perhaps those dreaded Monday morning earth science tests. Or maybe we recall trying to crack', the forgotten combinations to those gym lockers. We made lots of mistakes, like taking a shortcut across the Senior Walk. Or maybe we even followed some helpful upperclass- man's directions, and off we went looking for the elevator to the second floor! Our big social function of the year was our freshman dance. We all agreed it would have been great if those Big juniors didn't crash it. Our freshman class officers, President Dave Schrumn, Vice-president Sue Loonam, Secretary Janice Lyon, and Treasurer JoAnn Harper, tried their best to unite our class. The next three years were to prove they had done a good job. We left our freshman year a little weary after finals, but we knew summer would help us recover. We returned to school in September of '64 as Big SOPHO- MORES. We really felt quite mature to know that we were no longer the babies of the school. However, the upperclassmen still believed we were only kidsf' What the girls probably re- member most about their sophomore year was their first expe- rience with dissecting all sorts of goodies in biology. We espe- cially enjoyed our dissections of grasshoppers when we were served our specimens fried!! Of course, being sophomores, we had a natural hostile attitude toward the juniors. This feud was to last and grow through the next couple of years to the tune of Juniors Rot. Sophomore year also brought with it many boys first attempts at Cheshire Varsity sports. Though they were only beginners, the boys showed the promise that was to give them winning teams in the end. Our sophomore class oflicers did a great job of preparing our class for its next two important years. Dave Schrumn held his office as president, Sue Loonam also served a second term, as vice-president, JoAnne Harper kept her favorite C?D job of collecting dues, Kathy Walsh took the notes and Cathy Loonam planned our social events. We all looked forward to our sophomore summer, happily saying good- bye to geometry! After two months of rest, we Hnally returned to school as upperclassmen. The first thing we did upon returning to school was elect our officers. Joe Webb was our new president, Paul Swem was elected vice-president, Kathy Walsh kept her job as secretary, JoAnne Harper continued her work with the money, and Kathy Belvin was elected our new social chairman. As a sign of our achievement we received our junior rings. Oddly enough, they all looked the same C?! J. We still can't quite figue out how that big pile of snow was dumped in the middle of the senior walk. Oh well, I guess it will always be a mystery! Cright Stone Brakers?D There are many things which remain in our minds about our junior year. How could we ever forget chemistry!!! Especially those poor students who handed in their OPX'S on confetti paper! Well anyway, by mid- terms most of us had given up on chemistry, and our brains began working on a more pleasant subject: The Junior Prom. After much debate, we decided our theme would be Carouself' We also decided to be the first class ever to have a popular band, The Vandells, play for us. Through much hard work our prom was the greatest ever. No one even tried to ride the Carousel! After the prom, time flew. Before we knew it, sum- mer vacation had come again. No one was unhappy to return to school in September be- cause we had finally made it. We were UTHE SENIORST To lead our class we chose Paul Swem as president, Jon Holt as vice-president, Kathy Walsh as secretary, JoAnne Harper as treasurer, and Kathy Belvin as social Chairman. As it turned out, out last year was the best. We all have so many senior memories. To start the year off right, our senior laden football team gave Cheshire its best record in years. Almost every Satur- day there was a victory party at jacks. The Cross Country team, also filled with seniors, won the Housatonic League championship. One very odd thing happened in the fall. Around Halloween time, it seemed that all the pumpkins in town disappeared and ended up in the oddest place: the senior court. Some people claim they saw the seniors climbing over the school roofs with bundles of pumpkins. But we can't see how this ever could have happened C?!D After Halloween, we all looked forward to the big Homecoming weekend. With our 37 to 6 trounce of Lyman Hall, and our gaining of both beanpots, the weekend was a great success. The king was Paul Pasqualoni and the queen, Kathy Loonam, the court was Susan Loonam, Eaul Swem, Mike Votto, Mark Kuhn, Linda Ernst, Nancy Kelley, Lee Moulton, and Kathy Belvin. We all missed the Saturday games and week- day meets for awhile, but basketball was on the way. With December, we all looked forward to Christmas. For the first time, the Student Council sponsored a hall decorating contest among the classes. It was generally agreed that we seniors did have the more sophisticated decorations, but the mod juniors had the more spectacular ones. Oh well, at least the senior court- yard looked its best in years. How did that tree ever grow over- night anyway? Some say it came the same way the pumpkins did. Well, it showed our Christmas spirit anyway. january flew by. February brought with it our senior prom, Frosted Fantasy. The N.A.I.F. livened the night. We all ar- rived home around three Ca.m. or p.m.?D. After the senior 16 prom, spring was on its way. With spring came the disease which usually hits seniors around this time of the year-senior- itis. Some cases were very bad!! We did have our senior play to keep us going, though. Teahouse of the August Moon was a great success, also. We hope the wear and tear on Mr. Griffin's nerves will be cured soon. We can't see how anyone could have been so patient with us! During May, all our thoughts turned toward graduation. Be- fore we knew it, the time had come. We all agreed that Mr. Willets, who had worked so hard for us through the years, de- served a reward. How was your swim at the class picnic Mr. Willetts? June arrived all too soon. We couldn't believe this was really our graduation day. With mixed feelings, each of us received our diploma. FOOTBALL TEAMS .ui Co-Captains Paul Pasqualoni and James Dinnan did a great job in making a sucessful team. Both boys made The Housatonic League team. Coach MaClary led both the boys and the school to victory. Our final record was 6-3 but this doesn't even half indocate how great this team was. The spirit of both the players and the students made the season a truly happy one. The season began on a disappointing note, with our first two losses to Amity and North Haven, but then we started. The day was dull and rainy, but not the spirit, on this day we beat East Haven, who were to be league champs and only us as the team who beat them. We were truly proud and continued our feel- ing. On our home field we remained undefeated. Our only other loss was to Derby, which was a heartbreaking 6-0. We ended the season with a big success beating Lyman Hall 57-6 for our Homecoming Game. All players on the team did a terrific job. Both Co-Captains Paul Pasqua- loni and James Dinnan were named to the Housatonic League Team and 2nd String All- State Team. Also Paul Pasqualoni became the first to be named the Register Player of the Week. The '67 football team was really great and the seniors will remember it for a long time to come. 37-B Cheshire Rips Plainville In 29-0 Contest CHESHIRE tSpeciali -Che- shire High blasted over ZZ points in the second period and rolled to a 29-0 victory over Plainville here Saturday. Senior Dave Schrumm scored two touchdowns and was'Che- shire's leading ball carrier with 153 yards in 20 carries. The Housalonic league victo- ry was Cheshire's third in five starts. Overall the team's re- cord is 4-2. Other scorers for Cheshire in- cluded John Twomey, -Mike Vot- to and Lee Moulton. The victory gave caoch Dave Maclary's Rams a 545 record. Lee Moulton tallied the first two scores on runs of 32 and five yards. Bob Schwed passed to Jack Pelcher for the third score. The Rams' final fall came on a 25yard field goal by George Rose. Bill Ahern raced 44 yards for Shelton's touchdown in the third quarter. The high point of the season was our victory over a strong East Haven team. The boys showed their team effort and spirit in this game. We won't easily forget that close game with Ly- man Hall or that amazing ending to the Derby game. Mr. Chandler had praise for his seniors this season who sacrificed their time in order to help the young- er boys. For the future there is nothing but vic- tory in sight. HCI Press Bureau Press Bureau has taken many interesting pictures and has Written many stories which have appeared in the Water- bury Republican. It has kept students up to date with cur- rent events. Language Lab Maintenance Crew A Language Laboratory is a very interesting place. These students work in the lab and keep up its operation. Interact The Interact is a young club but has succeeded in doing many things these past few years. Among other activities it has given much financial aid to various organizations. L im '--...,,N.i'-N 9 nil--xxx-X5 Pep Club The Cheshire High School Pep Club is a large organization. Led by president, Eileen DeVylder, the Club has aroused spirit in the student body. It also produced the greatest Homecoming ever this Fall. W, Biology Club The Biology Club grows year after year. Under the guidance of, Mr. Mazzetti and Mr. Natale students get a chance to work in the fields they like. Field trips are planned often, too. Future Nurses Club The future nurses of CHS have had the opportunity to learn about their field under the guidance of Mrs. Leyden, the school nurse. They have visited many hospitals, seen films and participated in interesting discussions. Future Teachers Club This year Mrs. Schilo has led a truly exciting club. W Social Science Club Mr. Morgan has shown CHS a very interesting and beneficial program. Various planned activities enable students to learn more about History. Math Club Mr. Kolej provides interesting math problems for students wanting more than the classroom provides. They work more in the world of ICHSOHIU8- ,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,, Home Economics Club Mrs. O'Connor has helped these girls learn more about detailed as- pects of homemaking. 4 Classics Club This year Latin students are able to further their knowledge of the Classics under the direction of Mr Foley. Modern Dance Club Under the guidance-of Mrs. Per- relli girls get the chance to show their dancing skills at the Modern Dance Assembly held in May. Drama Club Under the direction of Miss Shea, students work on and off stage. Each class produces a short play, which is judged in a contest showing. Chorus Mr. Feilegy has taught this group well. The chorus participates in the annual Spring Concert. It shows us the true meaning of music in voices. 76 ocia Band The band, led by Mr. Peter Fellegy, has provided half-time entertainment at the football games. Besides this, the band puts on their annual Spring Concert and truly do a fine job. The band also marches in the Memorial Day Parade. Maj orettes Led by captain Nancy Kelly and co-captain Dayle Wiedenheft, the majorettes at- tended the football games and showed their twirling ability. Also, during the year, they raised money for their uniforms and went to other schools to compete in various corn- petitions. 78 'Teahouse of The August Moon Sakini, Janine Kovach, introduces Colonel Purdy Ill at the beginning of the play, Mike Frechette. Lotus Blossom, Sandy Krivi- nadas, and Captain Fisby, Jon ' Holt, talk over some plans for geisha girls. The Wrestling match was a great part of the play. Here Mr. Seiko, Richard Walesky, Hips Mr. Hokaida, Charles l Waggoner, out of the ring. The greatest play ever was presented on April 7 and 8, when the Senior class pre- sented Teahouse of the August Moon. Under the direction of Mr. Griffin and the aid of Mr. Andrews we had a very successful play. The bonfire was the biggest and most spirited to hit CHS. Paul Pasqualoni and Cathy Loonam were crowned King and Queen .The winning Rams held to their great record on Thanksgiving Day by beat- ing the poor Trojans with a 37-6 score. Once again the famous beanpot was in the hands of Cheshire. The weekend was topped off with the elaborate Homecoming Dance. Decorations included a big beanpot hanging from the center, honoring the vic- torious Rams reams. .W T A 82 I Magazine Drive This year's magazine drive was very successful.
