We are young now, and a great road lies bc- lore us upon which we may tread to the very heights ol' success. But, when in the course ol' the years, we lind ourselves disillusioned. our dreams shattered, this book will be 21 consolation and a reminder of the friends and associations of the past. XVQ wish y 1y more l'ruiti'ul yczlrs zu CIIICSII IO History of Cheshire Academy OR over a hundred and fifty years the educational institution at Cheshire has maintained an honorable record and has rendered valuable service to the cause of education. Throughout the nineteenth century and now dur- ing the second half of the twentieth, its roll of graduates includes names famous in history, politics, education, finance, and society. It has drawn students front many foreign countries: Argentina, Chile, and Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Panama, and from the continent of Europe, students from Holland, Germany, Hungary, Russia, Latvia, Spain and France. There have also been students from England and China. One might say that the Cheshire Academy, in one of its several forms since 1796, is known all over the civilized world. The foundation of Cheshire Academy as an educational institution was determined in 1792 by the first Episcopal Bishop in America, Samuel Seabury. It was not, however, until April 28, 1796, that the cornerstone of the Academy was laid and the school officially opened by the Reverend Tillotson Bronson. Doctor John Bowden was chosen Principal at the annual Convention at Cheshire, in june, 1796, when a constitution was drawn up and a board of twenty-one Trustees was elected. The first building, Bowden Hall, was completed in the autumn of 1796 by the people of Cheshire. Sarcity of funds necessitated the granting by the State Legislature of a lottery to raise the sum of fifteen thousand dollars. College degrees, however, were not permitted by the Legislature. The Reverend William Smith succeeded Doctor Bowden in 1802, and three years later the Academy was incorporated by the Legislature of the State of Connecticut. During the following years the Academy went through several changes of prosperity and adversity. Then in 1862 under the leadership of Doctor Sanford Horton, the Academy was established as a flourishing military school which attracted students from far and near. These were the days of the Civil War and three famous members of the Alumni were Admiral Foote, General Wheeler, and Secretary NVelles. The thoughts of students naturally gravitated towards army life, just as they did during the past years when the present Academy included a junior R.O.T.C., Military Science and Aviation Science among the courses offered. The last Principal of the Episcopal Academy, upon the retirement of Doctor Horton in 1892, was Eri D. Woodbury who served the school unsparingly for seven years. At the end of this period the Trustees of the Diocese of Connecticut leased the school for ninety-nine years to the Trustees of the Cheshire School, Inc. The buildings were entirely renovated and the school placed on a thoroughly modern basis. In 1917 the Academy, under the name of Roxbury School, was under the Headmastership of Mr. Walter Ferris, the father of Stuart Ferris who is now a member of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Arthur N. Sheriff, the present Headmaster, took office in 1922 and it was during his regime in 1937 that a Charter was granted by a Special Assembly in Hartford, and the school was named Cheshire Academy. Mr. Sheriff by preserving the best of the traditions of the past and including many modern features has made Cheshire Academy one of the most outstanding institutions of learning in the country. ll S'IlfJ6l'f71f6'?Id61If of Buildin Board of Trustees IQOBPZRT A. 'l'hey were handicapped by the lack of height and experience so olten lountl in high school freshmen fires. 'l'hey had the seoring potential in Bruce Macllonald and Peter Miller, but lacked the control ol' the ball and backboards necessary to score. Their opening game was played against the Crosby High School Frosh with the Midgets losing by a score ol' Sl--12. Other games were played against 'liorrington, Crosby, Bristol, and Naugatuck. llnlortunately the team went down to defeat in every contest. Along with the team's two high scorers. MacDonald and Miller, the others on the lirsl string were Chuck O'Hara, 'l'om Chamber' lain, and Nick Petralius. Also on the learn were Lautf, Batlin, Barber, liatlin and Clark. Although the Midgets lost all their games this year, they gained much experience and learned a great deal ol' basketball from Coach Lochtefeld, and it is hoped that they will make up an even better junior team next year. 98 mt row, left to right: Reidr, l'reisner. 'l'hey won only three games as compared with last, year's record of nine consecutive victories: but they did tie the Yale Freshmen and Wlorcester Academy. 'l'hree games were lost to Trinity Frosh, Wesleyan Frosh, and the UConn Freshmen also. Credit must be given to every member of the squad, for everyone on the team gave his utmost in every game. Cliff Mcfioldrick, and .loc Rothman, a junior, both proved to be excellent goalies and helped to support the varsity considerably. Hob Feldman was a stalwart at fullback position. Only a junior, he should be even better next year. Carlos de lelaseth did sotne beautiful kick- ing and some outstanding defensive work. Rodriguez, another fullback, greatly helped the situation later in the year. l.es -laner and Marrero played well at hallback. Les showed retnark- able ability for a first year man. The line consisted of the Diaz brothers, Carvallo, Romero and Del Olmo and centered around Oswald Fernandez. One of the best soccer men in Cheshire history, Olde was outstanding all season long. The boys got off to a flying start by knocking off a highly touted Teachers College Frosh at New Britain by a G6 to 52 margin. The Cadets of N.Y.M.A. proved to be the third victim of the Cats, succumbing 84-35. Three more victories followed before Cheshire hnal- ly dropped its first contest. The boys, inexperienced and lacking much practice, opened this season against the Junior Republic at Cheshire. Despite the fine work, the boys were tumbled by the highly spirited Republic team, 4l-39. However, this first game was a team test for the squad, and they took it in stride. The following contest was with Munson Academy. This time the story was entirely different. The .layvees developed a formidable lead, which they never relinquished, winning 44-21. Milford Academy was played on the home court under the most peculiar conditions ever witnessed by a Cheshire audience. 'l'heir hrst game was played against Crosby of Vvaterburyz the Cats losing by a score of 96-35. 'l'heir hopes for a good season were again shattered when Torrington crushed them, 60-15.
