Rittenband 7 HISTORY UF In 1792 a convocation of the clergy held in East Haddam under the insti- gation of Bishop Samuel Seabury, first Episcopal bishop of our country, voted to establish an Episcopal Acad- emy. In 1795 Cheshire was decided upon as the most logical site. Tillotson Bronson, the uncle of Bronson Alcott, opened the school, with the Reverend John Bowden of Stratford as Headmaster. Meanwhile the people of Cheshire began the erec- tion of a school building. ‘This build- ing known as Bowden Hall is the present school auditorium. Though hampered by lack of funds the school was successful from the start. The legislature forbade the eranting of collegiate degrees, but did permit the establishment of a lottery which netted the school about twelve thousand dollars. The first noticeable change in policy was made in 1862 when Dr. Sanford Horton turned the academy into a military school. It was Civil War time and three of the academy's graduates, Admiral Foote, General Wheeler, and Secretary Welles were in the national limelight. ‘The thoughts of students gravitated to- wards army life, just as they did dur- ing the past few years during which the present academy included a Jun- ior R.O.T.C., Military science, and Aviation science among the courses offered. CHESHIRE Doctor Horton must have been a remarkable man. He was deeply in- volved in town affairs and yet found time to run his school efficiently. He was especially fortunate in the choice of his successor, Eri Woodbury, who, after Dr. Horton retired in 1892, served as principal for seven years. The older alumni speak of these two men with the greatest of respect, and truly they must have been among the ereal. The Episcopal Academy ended as such in 1903. At that time the trustees leased the school for ninety-nine years to the Trustees of the Cheshire School Inc., who dropped the military fea- ture and turned the old institution into a modern boarding school. In 1917 it was combined with the Rox- bury school under the headmastership of Mr. Walter Ferris, one of whose sons, Stuart, is now a member of the Boardeor Lrusteess-of othe present school. For many years the present Head- master, Mr. Arthur N. Sheriff at- tempted to combine the better fea- tures of the past with the present. These efforts culminated in 1937 with the granting of a charter by special act of the Connecticut State Legisla- ture, permitting the school to become the Cheshire Academy. GRHAUWUATIUON FESTIVITIES JUNE 1947 GRADUATION PROM The Senior Committee with the help of a professional decorating com- pany transformed the gymnasium | into a place of beauty with a ceiling | of blue and gold cloth, a wall of blending colors, and soft lights. ‘The seniors with their guests danced to the dreamy music of Sonny Berman and_ his’ orchestra. During an intermission refreshments were served by Mr. Spear and his staff. At the end of the dance every one expressed the opinion that this was one of the best. Even the teams of younger boys appeared to be stronger and more successful. The Varsity Football team had a very suc- cessful season. As the season progressed, the team became stronger. After losing an early season game to the Connecticut State Junior Varsity, 26 to 6, there followed a one point defeat by Dartmouth Freshmen, 14 to 13. ‘The following week Columbia Freshmen were de- feated, 13 to 12. From this game until the end of the season the team was invincible, defeating three teams which up to the time we met them had been undefeated. Eastern Military was beaten 6 to 0; Mount Hermon, 12 to 0; and New York Military Academy, 1440) 13: While the varsity was succeeding, the Jun- ior Varsity was winning six games of an eight game schedule. Three of the victories were by identical scores, 7 to 0. This outfit made up of younger boys scored 80 points to their opponents 39. The midgets had _ trouble scheduling games with teams of comparable age and weight, but played two games, both of which they won. ‘The Soccer team bolstered by a number of South American boys had the best season ever attained by a Cheshire Academy Soccer squad. Playing a schedule of nine games this group came within one goal of going through the season undefeated, losing the final game to Ellsworth High School, the perenial Con- necticut State Champions. ‘The interest in soccer has increased to such an extent that today the academy soccer games draw crowds almost equal in size to those attending the football games. During the winter term the Varsity Basket- ball team headed by Bill Petrucelli who scored 256 points won seven and lost five. “he most exciting games were played against St. Thomas Academy of Hartford. At home we defeated this outfit by a score of 42 to 36. This was the first defeat administered to St. Thomas in three seasons of play. On the Hartford court in the most thrilling game of the season we lost in over-time, 54 to 53. The season was marked by inconsistant play. The Junior Varsity almost duplicated the Varsity record winning six and losing four. The Juniors won four while losing two. In the Spring the tennis, baseball, and track squads faced the usual handicaps of rain, wind, and cold. ‘The remarkable thing is that so many contests were held. ‘The Varsity.Pennis team, sparked by four return- ing varsity men: Markin, Porter, McNally, and Moore, and strengthened by the addition of several new boys including Cohen, Craig, Elman, Gatzert, and the sensational Garvan, under the capable coaching of Coach Dutton, experienced one of Cheshire’s best seasons. The most thrilling matches were those with Columbia University Freshmen and Wesleyan Freshmen. Cheshire won against Columbia 5 to 4, but lost by 5 to 4 to the Wesleyan team. Incidentally this was the only contest lost by the varsity. Other teams defeated were East- ern Military, Milford, and N.Y.M.A. The Junior Varsity under the leadership of Coach Holiday won two matches. The track team under Coach Faber cli- maxed a great season by winning the Mt. Hermon Interscholastics scoring 42 points to lead the field by a wide margin. In this meet Blumenfeld won both the High hurdles, and the broad jump. Not to be outdone by his fellow competitor, Stevens also took two first places in the 100 yard dash and the 220. These two men were consistent winners throughout the season, a season which saw victories over Stamford High, West Haven High, Hillhouse, and Crosby. The only loss was to the Amherst College Freshmen. Bill Reeves baseball team started off very successfully with a 4 to 2 victory over Choate School. Bill Hamilton struck out 16 men while going the full nine innings. The next game was dropped to La Salle 16 to 10, nine errors contributing to this defeat. ‘The third game with Milford resulted in a 3 to 2 loss; Hamilton pitching two hit ball in defeat. The next two games against N.Y.M.A. and Columbia Fresh resulted in victories for Che- shire and ‘Thompson who pitched both. ‘The pitching staff developed sore arms and other injuries which hurt us in our next four games, all of which we lost. Yale defeated us 7 to 5, and both Wesleyan and Eastern Military won by a 5 to 4 score. The leading hitter was Pepe with a .378 average, followed by Daly with .361. | | (4 PUSS +72- 102 DEBATING SUCIETY After a slow start the Debating Society be- came one of the most active organizations on the campus. During the year four meetings were held with other institutions. ‘The high- light of the season was the formal debate on December 11th with the Choate School. In addition the Society featured meetings in which debate and informal discussion were combined with extremely successful results. ‘Two such meetings were held, one with Hot- chkiss School, and the other with the Kent School. Cheshire also participated in a radio debate over Station WBRY at Waterbury on the subject, “Is Culture Slipping Today.” Besides these outside meetings, regular weekly meetings of the Society were instituted which afforded opportunity for intra-society debates and for members to gain practice in public speaking. Under the stimulus of such meetings, the membership increased from eight to twenty-five.
