. . . odaij i± tfiE iz±t day oj iiis: d ±i oj ouz Jdijz e [j dLcaiLon Miss Louise McClung Reynolds, R.N. Is Seniors our time at C. O. is drawing to a close. We, as graduates, will take many memories with us wherever we go. But there will be the memory of one person that we will both take with us and leave here. It is of one whose presence was not always visible but always felt. She has instilled in us a great sense of pride and dignity, not only in our profession but in ourselves. She has always dedicated herself to the student with her patience, understanding, and wisdom. Now the Class of 1971 would like to dedicate “The Aeneid — 1971” to you. Miss Reynolds. We will never forget you for your guidance and trust in us. We now know that our lives are much richer by your spirit and influence. 2 Miss Louise Reynolds, R.N. Director — School of Nursing Miss M. Si ud nt sAfux±£i Between the security of childhood and the insecurity of womanhood we find a fascinating group called “Student Nurses”. They come in assorted weights, sizes, shapes, and states of sanity. They can be found anywhere; in hospitals, on the telephone, in bed, in OB, scrubbing in OR, and always in debt. Patients love them, instructors tolerate them, and parents support them. A student nurse is at ease when not in class or on duty; brave, when a fellow student is by her side, and the protector of the patient with her procedure book close at hand. She has the energy of an exploding bomb; the shyness of a violet, the brains of Heaven-only -knows- what, the stories of the Army nurse, and the sincerity and aspirations of Florence Nightingale; and when she wants something, there is usually a shortage of help. Some of her likes are: doctors, interns, medical students, male patients, and the opposite sex. She dislikes: bedpans, enemas, bedbaths, wearing overly starched uniforms, some head nurses, hospital food, and getting up in the morning. No one else can cram into one uniform pocket: Bandage scissors, three safety pins, two rubber bands, two pens — one red, one blue — a roll of gauze, a small notebook, a comb, a lipstick, room keys, medicine cards, notecards, and a crushed pack of cigarettes. She spends money on: food, nylons, cigarettes, stamps, and phone calls home. A student nurse is a magical creature. You can lock her out of your heart. You can cross her off your mailing list but not off your mind. She is your long-away-from-home loved one, and your one-and-only good-for-nothing bundle of worry. But all shattered dreams become significant when your student nurse walks down the aisle at graduation in her white uniform and looks at you through wide, teary eyes and says . . . “I’VE MADE IT” 10 MRS. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant: they too have their story. Avoid loud • ggi' ssive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit . . . If you compare yourself with others, you may become bitter or vain, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time . . . Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass . . . Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be . . . And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. —Max Ehrmann 41 Linda Hanna 1st V. Pres. Freda Snyder 2nd V. Pres. Therefore, each day fill kerosene lamps, clean chimneys, and trim wicks. Wash the windows once a week. 4 The nurse’s notes are important in aiding the physician’s work. Make your pens carefully, you may whittle nibs to your individual taste. 5 Each nurse on day duty will report every day at 7 a.m. and leave at 8 p.m., except on the Sabbath on which day you will be off from 12 noon to 2 p.m. 6 Graduate nurses in good standing with the director of nurses will be given an evening off each week if you go regularly to church. 1 Each nurse should lay aside from each pay day a goodly sum of her earnings for her benefits during her declining years, so that she will not become a burden. Eor example, if you earn $30 a month you should set aside $15. 8 Any nurse who smokes, uses liquor in any form, gets her hair done at a beauty shop, or frequents dance balls will give the director of nurses good reason to suspect her worth, intentions, and integrity. 9 The nurse who performs her labors, serves her patients and doctors faithfully and without fault for a period of 5 years will be given an increase by the hospital administration of 5 cents a day providing there are no hospital debts that are outstanding.
