The creation of G. Gruenewald, a gifted Viennese artist, was first used by Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in the fall of 1933. Seeking a symbol to indicate the quiet restfulness of its air-conditioned trains, Chesapeake and Ohio adopted the now famous Chessie and used it to invite travelers everywhere to Sleep Like A Kitten on its railroad. Overnight the nation took Chessie to its heart. Her picture appeared on the Chesapeake and Ohio calendar for 1934, and the response was spontaneous and genuine. When Chessie first appeared, some said: Who ever heard of using a gol darned cat to advertise a railroad? But overnight Chessie had become America ' s Sleepheart . After a few months Chessie again made her appearance, this time with her first family-two sleepy little kittens to feature the Chesapeake and Ohio calendar for 1935. Chessie ' s fan mail reached movie-star proportions. Requests for her picture poured in from almost every part of the world. Kids adopted Chessie as the number one pin-up. She helped brighten the wardrooms of our battle fleets . . . and in hospitals, brought a smile of hope to shut-ins. And then came Peake-Chessie ' s Old Man. With hisproud and contented look, Peake is symbolic of Chesapeake and Ohio ' s dependable transportation seiwices. For more than a quai ' ter century the popularity of Chessie has been universally acclaimed. Chesapeake and Ohio is now referred to affectionately as Chessie ' s Railroad and its 5,000 miles of track are known as The Chessie Route.

Stephen Bosckey, professor of Biological Sciences, encouraged and inspired completion of education. A dynamic and instamatic person who prompted desires to reach higher goals. A man who believed in patience and fortitude. That was our Mr. B whom we all will remember forever in class, in back yard grillings, in just having fun. You said just the thing that I wished you would say, And you made me believe that you meant it; I held up my head in the old gallant way. And resolved you should never repent it. There are times when encouragement means such a lot. And a word is enough to convey it; There were others who could have, as easy as not- But, just the same, they didn ' t say it. There may have been someone who could have done more To help me along, though I doubt it; What I needed was cheering, and always before They had let me plod onward without it. You helped to refashion the dream of my heart. And made me turn eagerly to it; There were others who might have (I question that part)- But, after all, they didn ' t do it!
