Bayne .Advisor TO OUR PARENTS: We would like to express our thanks to you for your untiring efforts, faithful, sympathetic understanding and love; if not for you our lives might not be as full and rich. The word is small but behind it lies immeasurable gratitude and so in our small but sincere way we say .... THANK YOU MOTHER AND FATHER The creation of G. Gruenewald, a gifted Viennese artist, was first used by Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in the fall of 1933. Seeking a symbol to indicate the quiet restfulness of its air-conditioned trains, Chesapeake and Ohio adopted the now famous Chessie and used it to invite travelers everywhere to Sleep Like A Kitten on its railroad. Overnight the nation took Chessie to its heart. Her picture appeared on the Chesapeake and Ohio calendar for 1934, and the response was spontaneous and genuine. When Chessie first appeared, some said: Who ever heard of using a gol darned cat to advertise a railroad? But overnight Chessie had become America ' s Sleepheart . After a few months Chessie again made her appearance, this time with her first family-two sleepy little kittens to feature the Chesapeake and Ohio calendar for 1935. Chessie ' s fan mail reached movie-star proportions. Requests for her picture poured in from almost every part of the world. Kids adopted Chessie as the number one pin-up. She helped brighten the wardrooms of our battle fleets . . . and in hospitals, brought a smile of hope to shut-ins. And then came Peake-Chessie ' s Old Man. With hisproud and contented look, Peake is symbolic of Chesapeake and Ohio ' s dependable transportation seiwices. For more than a quai ' ter century the popularity of Chessie has been universally acclaimed. Chesapeake and Ohio is now referred to affectionately as Chessie ' s Railroad and its 5,000 miles of track are known as The Chessie Route. f) Stephen Bosckey, professor of Biological Sciences, encouraged and inspired completion of education. A dynamic and instamatic person who prompted desires to reach higher goals. A man who believed in patience and fortitude. That was our Mr. B whom we all will remember forever in class, in back yard grillings, in just having fun. You said just the thing that I wished you would say, And you made me believe that you meant it; I held up my head in the old gallant way. And resolved you should never repent it. There are times when encouragement means such a lot. And a word is enough to convey it; There were others who could have, as easy as not- But, just the same, they didn ' t say it. There may have been someone who could have done more To help me along, though I doubt it; What I needed was cheering, and always before They had let me plod onward without it. You helped to refashion the dream of my heart. And made me turn eagerly to it; There were others who might have (I question that part)- But, after all, they didn ' t do it! The Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital offers a wide variety of expereinces for students in medical and surgical nursing. Students receive supervised experiences in clinical specialties, and have an opportunity to assist with their continous rehabilitation when these patients return to the out-patient clinics. Taking the temperatures, giving the pills To remedy mankindās numerous ills, Feeding the babies, answering the bells. Being polite with a heart that rebels. Longing for home, and all the while, Wearing the same old professional smile, Blessing the new-born baby ' s first breath. Closing the eyes that are stilled in death. Taking the blame for all mistakes, Oh, dear! What a lot of patience it takes, Going off duty at seven o ' clock. Tired, discouraged and ready to drop, But called out to help at seven-fifteen, With woe in the heart that must not be seen. Morning and evening, noon and night, When we report off to cross the bar. Nurseās Home and also the doors to Professional Nursing. Introductions of roommates, instructors, housemothers, junior and senior students, and other hospi- tal personnel was made our first day. The following day we were loaded down with books and started our long seige of study hours. Now for the roll call! Virginians; Lucy, Judy, and Barbara; Tennessee; Suzy; Kentucky; Clara; Ohio; Mary Ann; and West Virginia; the remainder of the class. Total . . . 28. During our first month at C. O. Barbara Lilly withdrew from our class due to illness. The re¬ maining young ladies continued to study Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, and Microbology under Professor Steven C. Bosckey during the summer months. This routine was broken by the back yard picnics on Wednesdays, sunbathing and swimming at Douthout State Park, walking to town in the sweltering sun, and yacking sessions after supper with Mr. B. in the backyard. September found all away on vacation. Upon returning we once again found ourselves lost in the midst of books plus the beginning of practice. By the middle of October we were dressed in uni¬ forms and shiny white shoes, and carried scissors, pens, and paper in our pockets. On December 9, 1962, twenty-six proud pre-clinicals were capped Freshmen at the local YMCA. The annual Holly Ball didn ' t find many of our Freshmen out that year. Again classes, witn a break for Christmas, until May 1963. Special courses begin with the receiving of the Junior Strips. One group packed their bags and biding us adieu set out for SHSH aboard our wonderful friend Chessie. The trek of evening duty begin for some and in July OR experiences began. Boy was that air con¬ ditioner a life saver! ! ! As the cycle continues -- Diet Kitchen, Evening and night duty, OR, charge duty, OPD, and then to U. Va. Weāll never tell what happened there! Senior strips were received with great glee. Twelve more months till graduation . A review of the class is now in order; eight married students, eight single students, making a total of sixteen in all. A few activities of the past couple years show that Brenda joined the Army and the representatives to State Convention in 1963 was Suzy, and in 1964--Brenda. Representatives to Na¬ tional Convention 1963 was Tommie, and in 1964āJanie and Nancy. Janie was chosen Miss Student Nurse of District 5 for 1964-65. The C. O. Student Organization was transferred to District 6 in October 1964. Joan was chosen Holly Ball Queen with Martha serving as Princess. March 1965, found us wishing the mail train had been robbed-- Comprehensives arenāt any fun, ya know! 30,000 review questions plus tests, plus reading--IT CANāT BE DONE! OH, BUT IT WAS DONE! ! ! ! May found us all working hard to complete everything before the final rush week. The Annual staff was skittering here and there getting the last minute pictures. The President and Secretary-treas¬ urer was getting reports and business matters straightened out. We were busy thinking of the Senior Banquet and dance in June. HURRAY! ! Classes are finished. Baccalaureate is tonight at the Presbyterian Church and Gradua¬ tion exercises tomorrow night at the Clifton Forge High School followed by a reception at the Hos¬ pital o What next? Twelve young ladies will be Graduate Nurses and will be looking forward to the taking of State Registration Boards on the 25 and 26 of June. The remaining four will remain at C. O. for a short time to complete their work and will write the State Board late in September. Let us move forward for a period of one year and reminiscent. Sixteen new graduates from the Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital School of Nursing will be remembering all of the above plus the many experiences which we enjoyed as students. We will be remembering the study hours, the peanut- butter and jelly sandwiches, loud music, telephone calls, staying up all hours of the night, gossip¬ ing, the wonderful sound of Chessie whizzing by, and the coal cars clanging together. This and many, many more experiences come to mind and we also think of those who helped us to make our dreams come true. And most of all we think of one another and how each one of our classmates gave us something to think about and work for during periods when we thought we just couldnāt go on. 18 i9ii BI iPiflKMl 1 1 B . t ' - MlfB fl H 20 Time: 1975 Place: Pluto Event: Reunion of the Class of 1965 Well, here we are on Pluto. Five hours of flying from earth isn ' t such a long trip as com - pared to the long train rides we had during training at C. O. Who is that neat little hostess so anxiously awaiting our landing? Why it looks like , , . it is NANCY CALFEE. We always thought she was kidding when she said she wanted to be a space nurse. Oh, no! Look, that cute couple in the bright red space ship is getting a ticket for speeding. They look familiar; maybe they are from earth, too. Oh, it ' s CLARA and Gus. Who is that cou¬ ple in the back seat, Clara? Your twins. Well we hadn ' t heard. Congratulations I Let ' s find out who this couple is that ' s been over there on the shore basking in moonglow. It ' s LUCY and J. B. and I do believe they are wearing wedding bands. Congratulations, you two! Gee, how cute! There ' s a couple landing in a big lump of Coal. It seems like I ' ve seen them , . . sure that ' s MARTHA and Bobby. Martha is now writing state board exams for students in West Virginia. These space cops are really on the ball today. There ' s someone getting a park¬ ing ticket. That sure is an odd looking space ship. It ' s built like an army tank. No wonder, it ' s BRENDA and WOW! that handsome colonel she married. Brenda is captain in the Army Nurses ' corps in Texas now, I ' m thirsty. Let ' s go over to the fountain and have a drink of Plutoshine. Watch out! Step back ! Here comes another speed demon and in a space ship built like a cow. That must be someone from a dairy farm. It sure is , . , JANIE and Harry and their one, two, three, oh four boys. You sure are working toward that five carrot diamond ring aren ' t you, Janie? Doesn ' t that little space ship built like a diesel engine make you kinda homesick for C. O.? Let ' s get a picture of it. Wait, there ' s two couples getting out of it. Well we should have known . . . it ' s SHERYL and Larry and MARGARETT and Tad. Sheryl is O. R. Supervisor at C. O. now and Margarett is Director of Nursing Service. Sounds like you all are really keeping the memory of the class of ' 65 at C. O, Look! Over there is a couple of girls dressed in star-flies. They must be permanent resi¬ dents here. They are coming over here to join our party. Well, of course . . . it ' s JOAN and JOAN. Rutherford is doing camp nursing and Private Duty with Bernie on the side. Kesler finally landed that millionaire so she was the first to establish a school of nursing on Pluto. We always knew you would make history, Joan. Gee, that ' s a snazzy white ship coming in out there now. Oh, it ' s another one of our old class¬ mates . , . MARY ANN and Ronnie and all the little Coffey ' s, Mary Ann is an industrial nurse in Washington now. I ' ve seen it all now . . . check that orchid space ship landing out there, made in the form of a beach umbrella and that lady in the full skirts getting out of it. Looks like . . . why that ' s DREMA GIBSON. Seems she has quite a successful marriage and is now the Director of Nursing Service in a school in Florida. Shhh! what ' s all the commotion at that church down the street? Oh, it ' s a wedding! Let ' s get a look at the bride. Oh, it can ' t be, I can ' t believe it . . . get me another drink of Plutoshine quick! It ' s our own JEAN CLARK and Mr. Wonderful getting married. Our congratulations! Could the honeymoon wait until after our reunion? Look at that silly couple in the paper space ship. Oh, we should have known . . .it ' s LANA and Butch. Lana is now the industrial nurse at the paper mill. Look out there ... a school of Plutofish. Oh no! it ' s TOMMIE and Butch ' s little Navy. Wheee-whill, a dress of thousand dollar bills and look who ' s in it BARBARA no less, being- escorted by Jackie. Weren ' t we the lucky ones to be the first class ever to have our reunion on Pluto? I also wonder how we rated this elegant banquet hall. Clifton Forge, Virginia Chevrolet and Oldsmobile Our customers Enjoy the BEST Compliments of: JOHNNIE ' S BARBER SHOP Ridgeway Street Clifton Forge, Virginia Chessie was never like an ordinary cat. She didn ' t even have the hardships of the usual kitten life. One day she appeared and this is the reason we love Chessie so much. She wasn ' t a bit wild or distempered, but was purring happily and washing her fine glowing fur. She snuggled into a basket near the window and quickly became the center of attraction. She particularly caught the eye of one young gentleman called Peake. Cupid begin work immediately! Chessie and Peake were joined together through the bonds of the cat-lock vows. On Chessie ' s twenty-first birthday she presented Peake with twin sons. Of course they were named after the grandfathers (Ovid and Oliver), but they were known as the O ' s . Chessie and Peake were fine proud parents and had a very happy family. Private Peake Off to war Transportation Saturday news headlines: āāWAR! ! !ā Peake, knowing his duty, joins the service to aid his country. His heart is sad as he bids his wife and sons adieu and leaves aboard Lower 9. He had a long ride ahead of him but to make it easier he daydreamed of Chessieand his sons. Grandfather Peake has promised to care for them dur¬ ing his absence and he knew they would get along fine. The O ' s . . . my how those boys had grown in the past year. And their mother seemed to get more beautiful every day.ā Peake watched the scenery for a while then he wrote his family telling of his adventures thus far. Writing home Scenic journey One day Peake received a special package at the base. His pin-up girl was the most beautiful cat ever---Chessie. And those wonderful letters ... He became the envy of all his comrades. Peake just couldnāt wait to get home. News headlines: Peace Declared! 1ā āPeake received many medals of honor and was discharged from the services of his country. Chessie met Peake at the ship landing and they journeyed on via railway. The trip home included the pleasure of meeting the President, who happened to be at the Greenbrier. Soon Chessie, Peake, and sons were together again as one big happy family and as all fairy tales end . . . they all sleep like a kitten on the C. O.
