Senior Farewell Address After two and one-half years of arduous service marked by patience and forti¬ tude, the C O Class of ' 63 surrender this document to be filed in our drawer of memoirs. We need not tell our survivors of the many hard-fought battles, but we cannot refrain from revealing to you the determination and satisfaction that proceeds from conscientiousness of duty faithfully performed. By the terms of the agreement previously made, thirty-two future nurses entered the doors of the C O Nurses Home on June 19, 1960, with high expectations and determinations to remain steadfast to the last. Within this address we will strive to present the highlights of our many battles great and small, all of which we conquered in order to attain our goal. On that Sunday two and one-half years ago, we were all greeted by our command¬ ing officers and oriented to our barracks. Then after getting acquainted, settled, and a little more at ease, all thirty-two classmates, parents, and friends met to¬ gether in the mess hall for the farewell reception. The following day the battle of classes began and we were armed with all our textbooks which we were to use constantly throughout the forth-coming days, months, and years. Many new experiences awaited us that first summer, some we met cautiously with determination and others with avid enthusiasm. Among the highlights of the summer were our trip to Merck and Company, our picnics in the back yard, devotions every Monday night, and finally, our two weeks leave following basic training. Two weeks later, we returned to active duty dressed in full preclinical attire, ready for all new experiences our basic training had prepared us to encounter, not mentioning those that unexpectedly occurred. Many exciting events took place during the following months, especiall y Decem¬ ber, in which month we had the opportunity to take a guided tour of Boy ' s Home, Christmas caroled at Taylor ' s Nursing Home, the Holly Ball at the Greenbrier, the Smorgasbord party, and the climax of the month was our Capping ceremony which promoted us to the next highest rank of Freshmen. We proudly wore our caps as symbols of one of our victorious triumphs and this carried us through to another increase in rank as we received our Junior stripes. It was then that we as a class were divided into four squadrons, each squadron being at Spring Grove State Hospital in Baltimore and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The remaining squadrons staying behind to fight the battle on the home front. Finally, when all four squadrons had completed their specialized training at their foreign headquarters, they returned to the home front again as a complete unit, twenty honorable members remaining. 18
