So Long As JVe Love, We Serve So long as we love, we serve. When these words were first spoken, they came from Robert Louis Stevenson, a man whose life exemplified them. Through his love for others he served humanity with his verses and stories that have been unsurpassed in literature. When we try to evaluate service, in any field of endeavor, it can be done only in terms of the love that inspired it. It has been long since proven that deeds of service are worth¬ while only when they are done in a spirit of unselfish love and complete humility. It was Saint Paul who said that we could do anything under the sun in the name of love, but if we did not have a real love in our hearts, it would amount to nothing. In fact, he said we could remove mountains, or give away all we owned, but if it were not done in the spirit of love, it would be like clashing brass or tinkling cymbals . There have been scores of great people who served humanity through the inspiration of love, and there was no clashing brass or tinkling cymbals as they worked! Since we are primarily interested in the field of Medical Science, it would be inspiring to stop and con¬ sider a few in this area. For instance, Madame Curie was inspired to study, experiment, and discover only because her burning love for knowledge towered above all else. Her dis¬ covery of radium transformed medicine. Then, we could name others including, Louis Pas¬ teur, Sir Joseph Lister, Walter Reed, and even Dr. Jonas Salk of our own times. Each one, in his own way, served humanity because he was driven by a love for knowledge and service. As nurses, we cannot forget our heroine, Florence Nightingale. Because she loved her work, her devotion to service is still reflected in the Nightingale lamp which has become the symbol of our profession. Just as she carried the lamp on her nightly rounds in long ago hospitals, her symbolic light still inspires others to carry on. But we can find the great¬ est inspiration of all from a great Physician, who lived in Galilee nearly 2,000 years ago. He showed us exactly and completely how to serve through love. He did simple, common, ordinary things in a friendly, kind way, without even thinking he was better than others. He loved children, He bathed the tired feet of his disciples. He broke bread to serve his friends, He saw beauty in birds and flowers, and He always looked with sympathy at the sick. He did even his great deeds quite simply. He taught us how to pray. He showed that God is as close as hands and feet, and He gave his life that we might live more abundantly. Someone has said that we have this earthly life but once. We shall pass this way only once and if we are to do anything worthwhile and lasting, we must do it now. Whatever stake we have in eternity must be planted in deeds of love and kindness now. This can be done in the simple everyday things. Even though our deeds may not lead to the fame of Madame Curie or Florence Nightingale, they are just as important and necessary in making the world a better place. So long as we love, we serve. As long as we are loved by others we are indispensable, andnopersonis useless while he has a friend. The challenge is breath-taking. Sometimes the poets can say in words for us the things we feel in our hearts. In the days and years to come, as we walk through the halls and into sick rooms to answer the call of duty, there might be something in this little poem that will make us think. If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain. If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain. Or help one fainting robin unto his nest again. I shall not live in vain. Emily Dickinson. by Mitzy Cauley. 10
