The meaning of this book varies with each individual just as it holds different memories. May these memories remain with us as the years go by and may we always remember and appreciate the efforts of the instructors and doctors who have so patiently helped us. DEDICA TION to Parents and Family We the Seniors of 1963 justly and sincerely dedicate this our annual, ’’The Aeneid”, to you, the ones who have helped us most, our parents and families. Without your understanding and guidance it would have been an impossible task for us to have continued on to our victory. 4 DEDICA TION Because of her wise guidance, friendly interest in each student, and because of her deep understanding and willingness to help us at all times, as a symbol of our gratitude and admiration we the class of 1963 proudly dedicate this, ’’The Aeneid , to Miss Emma Garland, R.N. 5 What Is A Student Nurse? On top of, running around or slithering past the patients’ bed - doctors yell at them - head nurses criticize them - residents overlook them - mothers worry about them - and patients love them. A Student Nurse is courage under a cap, a smile in snow white, strength in a starched skirt, energy that is endless, the best of young womenhood, a modern Florence Nightengale. Just when she is gaining poise and prestige she drops a glass, breaks a syringe or steps on a doctors foot. A Student Nurse is a composite - she eats like a team of hungry interns and works like a whole nursing staff put together. She has the speed of a gazelle, strength of an ox, quickness of a car, the abilities of Florence Nightengale, Linda Richards, and Clara Barton all rolled into one. To the head nurse she has the stability of mush, the fleetness of a snail, mentality of a mule and is held together with starch, adhesive tape and strained nerves. To an alumni she will never work so hard, carry more trays, make more beds or scrub on more cases than her predecessors. A Student Nurse likes days off, the O.R., affiliations, certain doctors, pretty clothes, her roommate, mom and dad, andyes, her School of Nursing. She ' s not much on working 3-11, days with classes, alarm clocks, getting up for duty or eating fried chicken every Sunday. No one else looks forward so much to a day off or so little to working 3-11. No one else gets so much pleasure from straightening a wrinkled sheet, or wetting a pair of parched lips. No one else can cram into one little head the course of a disease, the bones comprising the pelvis, what to do when a patient goes into shock, plus the ten top tunes on the hit parade and yes, that one certain address. A Student Nurse is a wonderful creature. You can criticize her but not discourage her, you can hurt her feelings but you cannot make her quit. Might as well admit it, whether you are head nurse, doctor, alumnae, boyfriend, or patient. She is your repre¬ sentative of a hospital, your loving symbol of faith and sympathetic care. She may not be an Elizabeth Taylor, but she is an example of the American way. She is judged not by her race, religion, or social standing. She is measured by her professional yardstick that measures her ability to make a bed, apply a bandage, or sacrifice her time to ease the pain of a patient, simply for the satisfaction of a job well done. She is a hard working, determined young girl doing her best for her school and hospital. Whenever she becomes discouraged or the load gets too heavy, she should remember that there is a reward waiting for her because surely some of God ' s angels wear whit( caps instead of halos and carry medicine trays instead of harps. Dressier Instructor of Nursing Mr. Stephen Bocskey Biological Science Instructor t ration Mrs. Marie Walker Instructor of Nursing So Long As JVe Love, We Serve So long as we love, we serve. When these words were first spoken, they came from Robert Louis Stevenson, a man whose life exemplified them. Through his love for others he served humanity with his verses and stories that have been unsurpassed in literature. When we try to evaluate service, in any field of endeavor, it can be done only in terms of the love that inspired it. It has been long since proven that deeds of service are worth¬ while only when they are done in a spirit of unselfish love and complete humility. It was Saint Paul who said that we could do anything under the sun in the name of love, but if we did not have a real love in our hearts, it would amount to nothing. In fact, he said we could remove mountains, or give away all we owned, but if it were not done in the spirit of love, it would be like clashing brass or tinkling cymbals . There have been scores of great people who served humanity through the inspiration of love, and there was no clashing brass or tinkling cymbals as they worked! Since we are primarily interested in the field of Medical Science, it would be inspiring to stop and con¬ sider a few in this area. For instance, Madame Curie was inspired to study, experiment, and discover only because her burning love for knowledge towered above all else. Her dis¬ covery of radium transformed medicine. Then, we could name others including, Louis Pas¬ teur, Sir Joseph Lister, Walter Reed, and even Dr. Jonas Salk of our own times. Each one, in his own way, served humanity because he was driven by a love for knowledge and service. As nurses, we cannot forget our heroine, Florence Nightingale. Because she loved her work, her devotion to service is still reflected in the Nightingale lamp which has become the symbol of our profession. Just as she carried the lamp on her nightly rounds in long ago hospitals, her symbolic light still inspires others to carry on. But we can find the great¬ est inspiration of all from a great Physician, who lived in Galilee nearly 2,000 years ago. He showed us exactly and completely how to serve through love. He did simple, common, ordinary things in a friendly, kind way, without even thinking he was better than others. He loved children, He bathed the tired feet of his disciples. He broke bread to serve his friends, He saw beauty in birds and flowers, and He always looked with sympathy at the sick. He did even his great deeds quite simply. He taught us how to pray. He showed that God is as close as hands and feet, and He gave his life that we might live more abundantly. Someone has said that we have this earthly life but once. We shall pass this way only once and if we are to do anything worthwhile and lasting, we must do it now. Whatever stake we have in eternity must be planted in deeds of love and kindness now. This can be done in the simple everyday things. Even though our deeds may not lead to the fame of Madame Curie or Florence Nightingale, they are just as important and necessary in making the world a better place. So long as we love, we serve. As long as we are loved by others we are indispensable, andnopersonis useless while he has a friend. The challenge is breath-taking. Sometimes the poets can say in words for us the things we feel in our hearts. In the days and years to come, as we walk through the halls and into sick rooms to answer the call of duty, there might be something in this little poem that will make us think. If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain. If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain. Or help one fainting robin unto his nest again. I shall not live in vain. We need not tell our survivors of the many hard-fought battles, but we cannot refrain from revealing to you the determination and satisfaction that proceeds from conscientiousness of duty faithfully performed. By the terms of the agreement previously made, thirty-two future nurses entered the doors of the C O Nurses Home on June 19, 1960, with high expectations and determinations to remain steadfast to the last. Within this address we will strive to present the highlights of our many battles great and small, all of which we conquered in order to attain our goal. On that Sunday two and one-half years ago, we were all greeted by our command¬ ing officers and oriented to our barracks. Then after getting acquainted, settled, and a little more at ease, all thirty-two classmates, parents, and friends met to¬ gether in the mess hall for the farewell reception. The following day the battle of classes began and we were armed with all our textbooks which we were to use constantly throughout the forth-coming days, months, and years. Many new experiences awaited us that first summer, some we met cautiously with determination and others with avid enthusiasm. Among the highlights of the summer were our trip to Merck and Company, our picnics in the back yard, devotions every Monday night, and finally, our two weeks leave following basic training. Two weeks later, we returned to active duty dressed in full preclinical attire, ready for all new experiences our basic training had prepared us to encounter, not mentioning those that unexpectedly occurred. Many exciting events took place during the following months, especiall y Decem¬ ber, in which month we had the opportunity to take a guided tour of Boy ' s Home, Christmas caroled at Taylor ' s Nursing Home, the Holly Ball at the Greenbrier, the Smorgasbord party, and the climax of the month was our Capping ceremony which promoted us to the next highest rank of Freshmen. We proudly wore our caps as symbols of one of our victorious triumphs and this carried us through to another increase in rank as we received our Junior stripes. It was then that we as a class were divided into four squadrons, each squadron being at Spring Grove State Hospital in Baltimore and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The remaining squadrons staying behind to fight the battle on the home front. Finally, when all four squadrons had completed their specialized training at their foreign headquarters, they returned to the home front again as a complete unit, twenty honorable members remaining. 18 Andnowwe, the twenty remaining members of this Class of 1963, long associated with vital trends and flowing creativeness in nursing activities, anxiously await June, 1963, when we will rise to our highest rank and goal of graduate nurse. We, thereby, hope that this historical collection of informative date, arranged in chronological order from beginning to end of our preparatory training, will forever remembered not only by those who participated in it s daily formation, but also by those who proudly and bravely follow to take their places in the history of the nursing profession. 19 Who’s Mary Cooke WITTIEST Patty Cooley MOST HELPFUL TO SCHOOL Pat Dotson MOST DEPENDABLE Alice Faust FLIRTIEST Jean Flecker MOST MISCHIEVOUS Karen Porter BEST ALL AROUND Patty Wagner MOST ATTRACTIVE Mary Lou Porter QUIETEST Dolores Scott MOST STUDIOUS Prophecy Catskills, New York May 30, 1968 Dear Patty, I thought I would drop you a line to let you know that we made it back all right from our trip. Now to catch you up on the news of the C O Class of 1963. In preparation for our reunion I have heard from everyone and what they are doing. Well, we thought Freda Unroe would always be in Clifton Forge, but she is now in Alaska helping Glenn sell refrigerators to the Eskimos. Carol Arthur is in California with Wayne doing private duty with two sets of triplets. Can’t you remember how spastic she was on Peds! And dear ole Cookie is Head Nurse on a Pediatric Ward at U. Va. now. You know how she hated Pediatrics, Poor kids! ! Received a card from Pat Grose and she has dyed her hair black. She also sent me a ticket to her hit show at the Flamingo in Las Vegas where she is doing the latest dance. The Hitchhiker. Instead of New York, Maggie is in Africa as a School Teacher, After three years of training, can you imagine that 1 ! I saw in the newspaper yesterday where Ronnie and Patty Cooley won a trophy with their dare-devil driving in their ' 59 Ford. Good thing she ' s used to all those cuts and bruises. Karen Cooper decided she wasn ' t doing enough for man-kind, so she opened her own orphanage and has 50 little children, all under 10 years of age. Dolores and Clyde are now living in the Bahamas teaching the natives the Limbo Rock , Guess what! Pat Dotson, who would never be anything but true-blue to Bob, has just obtained her third divorce from the third Bob! Bernie is living in Salt Lake City, Utah, with her little son while ' Benny is in Germany teaching school, Mitzy is in Georgia raising her own private nursery. Can you imagine those two being separated over 1,000 miles! Dorothy Hansen made headlines at the Indianapolis Speedway when she captured the International Stock-car Races by pushing Nellie-Belle over the finish line. Remember that blonde-headed guy that Alice Faust dated in training? Well, she met up with him again, and they ended up married and live in Maine on a small farm. She is helping them build their home by working as a mid-wife. Sue Ellen is now health nurse in an all girls school. Can you imagine her without being where all the boys are ? Mary Lou said she ' d never marry. Well, she changed her mind and married an oil tycoon from Texas and is living like a queen. Edna Liptrap ' s dream has finally come true. She is now an English teacher directing speech classes. You know how she loved to talk, Judy Harris, whose main job is training turtles, runs a trinket shop and does private duty nursing with her four children as a sideline. Dot and Hootie Collins are now again at Fort Belvoir after all this time out of the service. Iknowshe must be the top-notch military nurse on the post and doing jus t what she has always dreamed. Can you imagine Millboro without me and Paul? We have moved to the Catskill Mountains and are running a ski lodge, I am a ski instructor while Paul takes care of the two children. Sure hope you. Harper, and Perry Pat will be able to come in from France in time for our reunion in July. Am looking forward to seeing you soon.
