class History On June 15, 1958, twenty-one eager, excited, determined, hopeful, Florence Nightingales invaded the halls of the nurses home to be greeted by the smiling faces of Mrs; Dondley and Mrs. Lugar, our guardian angels for the next three years, in other words, the housemothers. After an exciting day filled with long drawn out activities, tearful good¬ byes to our families, exhausted, we fell asleep to the clatter of the trains to be awakened bright and early by the banging of the garbage collectors. Our first day started with a group of sleepy eyed, lonely, and homesick girls trudging our way to class only to be presented with an arm full of books to keep us occupied during our first few months of secluded life. On December 14, 1958, after six months of nerve wrecking studies and dorm life, nineteen jelly-kneed girls, most still starry eyed from the Holly Ball, mere hours before, received their coveted caps and Nightingale lamps at an impressive candle light service. The next six months were packed with more studies, floor duty, and plans for vacations, affiliations, and nights free from study hour. We were certainly excited the day we doned our freshly starched caps with the two junior stripes, indicating the status of hard-working second year students. Before we had time to recuperate five of our girls were boarding the train for Spring Grove and the beginning of our affiliations and living out of suitcases. Those remaining began their adventure into surgery, O.P.D., night duty, Medicine-Surgery H, and the various aspects that must be covered during our days of student life. The beginning of our third year found us still separated, half at U. Va. and the other half at the C O., some of which were enjoying much deserved vacations. Eighteen proud young ladies discarded much worn Junior stripes to appear as distinguished Seniors with the traditional black bands. On December 17, 1960, our class was re-united for a few hours, the first time in over a year, at the annual Holly Ball. This event was high¬ lighted by Dr. Emmett crowning our choice as queen. Miss Shirley Haynes, of Hot Springs, Virginia, and Miss Ida Bolling of Hinton, West Virginia, as princess. The last week in February the entire Senior Class was together again at our home school to complete our classes, take those much dreaded compre- hensives, and to prepare for that long awaited day, GRADUATION DAY. These last three months were packed with hard work, excitement, and con¬ fusion. May brought more excitement with the arrival of our graduate uniforms and high hopes that out most treasured dreams of becoming a Registered Nurse, would soon be fulfilled. Even the difficult task of starching our graduate caps didn’t mar our enthusiasm. June 12,1961, the families and friends of the Senior class were present to congratulate us on successfully completing three years as a student nurse. Now that we have reached the completion of our training days we cannot help but feel a bit sad. Knowing not where or when the eighteen of us would meet again we leave the CHESAPEAKE AND OHIO SCHOOL OF NURSING, to go our separate ways. 29
