ADAMS We, the Senior Class of 1961, do proudly dedicate THE AENEID” to Dr. John D. Adams, and Dr. Allen E. LeHew. .. who have served us faithfully as teachers, counselors, and friends. We wish to express our sincere and humble gratitude for their guid¬ ance and understanding when we were in need of it. We realize that they are more than worthy of this honor and tribute. DR. ALLEN E. LEHEW 3 Our Vdivents TO YOU. In sincere appreciation of your untiring efforts and faithful, sympathetic understanding as we ventured along life’s pathway, we, the Seniors, humbly express our gratitude. We feel that the verses found on the following page express our feelings, and although written by an unknown author, they express our sentiments toward you. MOTHER . The stretch of the years is now long past Since I was your baby girl The years when you mended a broken doll Or smoothed down a straying curl. I ' ve come since then to a woman ' s place To my graduation day. I ' m a nurse-and the dream of my child¬ hood hours Stands achieved-and my heart is gay. But mother, I know I could never have won If your love hadn ' t helped me along. I who was always so weak on the way You were ever so strong. DAD. To-day I ' m a nurse-it seems only a dream I can hardly believe that it ' s ture. My training is done-I have come to the end And my first grateful thought is of you. You, my father, who helped me so much on the way; You whose love and whose faith was so strong. Yours the kindness, the courage, the praise that was there In times when the way seemed so long. Your love and your help, and your kindly praise. These followed me through the years. A million thanks well up from my heart God bless you-your joy and your tears. You are my model-you my ideal Yours-ever the love that was true. God couldn ' t be with me all of the time So he gave me a mother like you. And mother, if ever around my neck The arms of a baby twine, I only ask God to be like unto you, You-little mother of mine. I know that you ' re proud. Dad, to-day as you see Your nurse-just so late your wee tot But my pride in you. Dad, rings as strong in my heart God love you-and bless you a lot. This is only a verse-just a thank you in rhyme But its accents are happy and glad. For it tells of the love that in grati¬ tude comes From a graduate nurse to her Dad. 5 Memoriam MRS. BETTY LEMONS McGUIRE October 16, 1960, brought much sadness to the hearts of the people at the Chesapeake and Ohio hospital due to the loss of a friend, class mate, and co-worker, Mrs. Betty Lemons McGuire. We will always remember her courage and faith in herself and in her profession. We, the class of 1961 are proud to have known her, and shared with her, her many heartaches and joys. She will always hold a place in our hearts and never be forgotten. AdministvAiion QrMude MISS GRACE M. After an exciting day filled with long drawn out activities, tearful good¬ byes to our families, exhausted, we fell asleep to the clatter of the trains to be awakened bright and early by the banging of the garbage collectors. Our first day started with a group of sleepy eyed, lonely, and homesick girls trudging our way to class only to be presented with an arm full of books to keep us occupied during our first few months of secluded life. On December 14, 1958, after six months of nerve wrecking studies and dorm life, nineteen jelly-kneed girls, most still starry eyed from the Holly Ball, mere hours before, received their coveted caps and Nightingale lamps at an impressive candle light service. The next six months were packed with more studies, floor duty, and plans for vacations, affiliations, and nights free from study hour. We were certainly excited the day we doned our freshly starched caps with the two junior stripes, indicating the status of hard-working second year students. Before we had time to recuperate five of our girls were boarding the train for Spring Grove and the beginning of our affiliations and living out of suitcases. Those remaining began their adventure into surgery, O.P.D., night duty, Medicine-Surgery H, and the various aspects that must be covered during our days of student life. The beginning of our third year found us still separated, half at U. Va. and the other half at the C O., some of which were enjoying much deserved vacations. Eighteen proud young ladies discarded much worn Junior stripes to appear as distinguished Seniors with the traditional black bands. On December 17, 1960, our class was re-united for a few hours, the first time in over a year, at the annual Holly Ball. This event was high¬ lighted by Dr. Emmett crowning our choice as queen. Miss Shirley Haynes, of Hot Springs, Virginia, and Miss Ida Bolling of Hinton, West Virginia, as princess. The last week in February the entire Senior Class was together again at our home school to complete our classes, take those much dreaded compre- hensives, and to prepare for that long awaited day, GRADUATION DAY. These last three months were packed with hard work, excitement, and con¬ fusion. May brought more excitement with the arrival of our graduate uniforms and high hopes that out most treasured dreams of becoming a Registered Nurse, would soon be fulfilled. Even the difficult task of starching our graduate caps didn’t mar our enthusiasm. June 12,1961, the families and friends of the Senior class were present to congratulate us on successfully completing three years as a student nurse. Now that we have reached the completion of our training days we cannot help but feel a bit sad. Knowing not where or when the eighteen of us would meet again we leave the CHESAPEAKE AND OHIO SCHOOL OF NURSING, to go our separate ways. 29 £asf Will And est Lment We, the graduating class of 1961, being of sound mind and body, do hereby bequeath this, our last will and testament. Capping Sunday, December 14, 1958 31 Place: Here, there and everywhere. Time: June 15, 1971. Chss Prophecy Dear Charlotte, How is Miami? I want to congratulate you on the birth of your new son, Leighton Abbott, the 3rd. Does this make four or five now? I have just finished touring several of the states, and was able to visit all our old classmates. I thought you might like to know what everyone is doing. My last stop was in Virginia and of course I visit¬ ed the C O. I had dinner at Susan’s new home in Covington and you ' ll never guess what-”Topsy” is working as OB supervisor and she has been with Susan during all three deliveries. Susan isn ' t working now, she has a pediatric department of her own. Jenny Irvine is working as a flight nurse (she always did like fly¬ ing high). Reta is owner and manager of an exclusive dress shop in New York. I don’t know what ever happened to her nursing life, but she is designing clothes for Mrs. Betty Cartes and her little red-headed daughter who are on their way tc Paraguay for a visit with that fam¬ ous doctor in their life. Several of the girls are still at the C O. Janet Lou went to John Hopkins and got her degree and is now working as O.R. supervisor. Pooch is working in O.P.D. and teaching Disaster Nursing! ' Shel- bia Jean’s dream of being Director of Nurses has come true, she was in the cafeteria greeting the new students while I was there. We have a new Pediatric Department and Virginia Cronk is Pediatric Super¬ visor. Ava Mae is Dr. Williams’ nurse, and she just had a poem pub¬ lished The Private Life of a Doctor’s Nurse . Shirley Haynes is in California and was in Clifton Forge this past May recruiting nurses. She is a lieutenant in the Navy; from what she says wedding bells are ringing for her and some dreamy captain. I went to visit Jo and I’ll let you guess where she is living. She is doing Frontier Nursing and I got to make igloo rounds with her. Mary Holmes is living in Alabama and she is doing private duty with her four children. She has two sets of twins now, the boys are three and the girls are six months. Marie and David are married now and living in Ohio. She was working as a public health nurse, but she is taking a leave of ab¬ sence, as she is expecting in December. Janis Wills has moved to Texas. She is getting ready to set-up the first hospital in outer-space. It sure sounds exciting but it’s not for me. As for me, I’m working on a luxury liner and will be leaving for a world tour soon, but not as a nurse, as Mrs. you know whol It took 10 years of hard chasing but I finally made it. Lots of love, Boston 32 Senior Poem T’was the night before duty when all thru the school, the students were laughing and acting like fools. The lights were all burning, not one room was dark, while down the hall Jenny sang like a lark! The uniforms were set up, the shoes were shined, but working did not enter’’Pooch Lilly’s” mind. When all at once we heard a loud shout, and ran to the window to peek out. We saw poor ’’Boston” down on her knees, and heard Mrs. Lugar saying, ’’thru the Hospital please.” The songs on the radio and records too, made Mary and Betty twice as blue. With ”Jo” in her pajamas and Ava her gown, they were still living it up after a night on the town. Mrs. Lugar had panicked, Mrs. Dondley too, they really didn ' t know just what to do. When up the stairs we saw them both come, not looking their age - my how they could run I The phone was ringing right off the wall, Susan had waited rather late to call, ’’Tammy,” she said, had the tummy-ache and ’’Topsy” didn ' t know just what she should take. And then ... ’’The phone, you know should be off the hook- must you girls break every rule in the book? Miss Houchins, Miss Hanshaw, Miss Bransford, Miss Blake, Don’t you girls know it ' s getting terribly late?” With a sly little grin and a twist of the head, the girls reluctantly went off to bed. Virginia and Janis from their rooms gave a shout — ’’Janet and Shirley, turn your lights out.” The hall was dark, the lights were dim,- but just you wait ' till 6:00 a.m. 33 Miss Janet Perry Wittiest Miss Rachel Lampe Most Studious Miss Shirley Haynes Best All Around Miss Ava Mae Reynolds Most Likely to Succeed Mrs. Janis Wills Most helpful to School 36 Mrs. Cassie Black Co-Sponsor Miss Eva Bussard Co-Sponsor Junior Class Officers President.(not pictured) Miss Ruth Walkup Vice President.Miss Nan Richmond Secretary-Treasurer.Miss Frances Doss 38 Mrs. Sharon Argabrite Alderson, W.
