In the years that are to come when the memories of our student nursing days have become dim, may this bookwhere- in we have endeavored to imprison the spirits of our alma mater, revive in our hearts once more her ideals and bind all together in a common love and loyalty to her. ' TftafUe WE DEDICATE THE 1955 AENEID To you, Miss Ricks, who because of your personality, kindness, patience, and deep understanding . . . because of your never tiring efforts to help others . . . because we have shared with you our ups and downs and through you have re¬ ceived guidance and sympathy . . . because of the good job of sponsoring our class . . . because you are deserving the ad¬ miration and respect we hold for you . . . we dedicate to you The 1955 Aeneid. To the one who has made our student nursing days more me aningful Oci ecUc itout 2 The world grows brighter year by year, Because some nurse in her little sphere Puts on her apron, and smiles, and sings. And keeps on doing the same old things. Taking the temperatures, giving the pills To remedy mankind ' s numerous ills, Feeding the babies, answering the bells. Being polite with a heart that rebels. Longing for home, and all the while Wearing the same old professional smile. Blessing the new-born baby ' s first breath. Closing the eyes that are stilled in death. Taking the blame for all mistakes. Oh, dear ! What a lot of patience it takes. Going off duty at seven o ' clock. Tired, discouraged and ready to drop. But called out to help at seven-fifteen. With woe in the heart that must not be seen, Morning and evening, noon and night. Just doing it over, hoping it ' s right. When we report off to cross the bar. LoisWinstel .Greshel J6 Ann Martin 12 .om iCftcUcuK Today the pictures taken on the night of graduation came back to the nursing school office and as I stare at the picture of those 2Z potential graduates, the picture fades and 1 see instead a picture taken on September 8, 1952 in front of the Y. M. C. A. and there are 32 eager young women touring the C. O. shops and getting ready to settle down to 3 years of hard work in their chosen pro¬ fession. This group had only yesterday came with their families and enrolled in this school of nursing. After viewing their rooms and getting unpacked, the girls left with their families for lunch and to return at 3 p.m.for a reception in their honor. Shortly after their families departed, they went to their rooms having a part gone with them, and to cover their loneliness they started getting acquainted with their classmates. That night they found the usual pranks await¬ ing them as they prepared to retire. These being the beds short-sheeted, crumbs, and macaroni in the beds and NOTES of encouragement pined to their pillow s. The following week was made up of tours, picnics, and the start of classes. They being Anatomy, Chemistry, Professional Adjustments I and Nursing Arts. By the end of the week they were well into the pattern of what being apreclinical r eally felt like . Beginning on Monday of the following week there was a set schedule to fol¬ low. So this was the beginning of their new life; the life of a nurse. Not too long after they were taught how to make a bed and give a bed bath were they kept off the wards. This new experience made them feel as though they were really a nurse. The last of February and first of March following found this group engrossed in finals and the worry of whether they would make the grade and receive their caps. On March the 8th this group of now 25 received their caps, a step in the nur sing profes sion which means that you have successfully passed your pre- clinical period and are now Freshmen. Things worth while remembering are their formal Christmas Dances at the Greenbrier, their basketball team, the Glee Club, those nights they entertained with talent shows, and their long hours of studying in the shower rooms and closets hoping that they neither aroused their housemother or their instructors at the far end of their hall. The day they had dreamed of ending came on June 5th when all classes were over for the year and was climaxed by a picnic at Douthat. For the next two years this class was separated due to affiliations and va¬ cations and now that they are all back together they feel as if their Senior year was the happiest. This year found them being invited to dances, banquets, and teas in their honor. The day they have longed for and even counted the days un¬ til, finally came; their graduation day. May 23, 1955. They will never forget this day with their long sleeves, their organdy caps, and the bouquet of roses. Indeed a day long to be remembered! This day was the final step in their cho¬ sen profession and having renewed their vow The Florence Nightengale Pledge, they felt that their past 3 years are not soon to be forgotten and this being their most valuable possession, their profession. The haze is gone and I see the picture of the graduation class of ' 55 and it is a reality of what WE have worked hard for and now have seen fulfilled. Audrey Simmons 13 cutcC We, the graduation clas s of ' 55 dohereby declare this our last will and testament. Libby Biggs leaves her ability to take shorthand to any one who likes to take notes.
