,The Chesapeake Panthers met a rough team front Guyan Valley. W. Va.. on the latter's fleld Wed- nesday afternoon, and ran into shore than they could handle. los- lng 20 to 'l.' The loss was Chesa- peake's second loss' of Bla season agalnst flve vlctorles and two tles. The game was played on a mud- dy field ln. a steady downpour of rain and sleet and there were lots of fumbles and very little of Danny Russel1's great pass- throwing. Coach Dlek'Ware'a Gunn Val- ley team took a quick lead mid- way through the first perlod when Roscoe Naples, the team's great fullback. aoored a touoh- down from the five yard line. In Saturday's game at Chesa- peake. the Panthers struck thru the air to rack up their victory. The first Panther touchdown came ln the initial quarter when Car- roll Keefer grabbed a lateral pass and ran for the marker. A pass from Danny Russell to End Charley Nlchols was good for the extra point. Later ln the first quarter, Roger Hungate took a Russell pass and 'went-over for the score, and Keef- er tookranother Russell aerial for the extra point. ln the second period. Nichols made a sensational catch of Rus- Rock sell's flip to scoot for the Pan- thers' third touchdown and Russell crossed up the enemy by runnfng the extra polnt. glv- ing the Chesapeake!! a 21-0 lead at halftlmeu ln the third perlod, there was no scoring at all. with both teams making mild scoring threats. lt was not untll midway ln the final stanza that Chesapeake tal- lled Ita :max fD. The try for conversion was no good, and the game ended with. that score. f Chesapeake Tunes Up Wins 39-6 C The Panthers of Chesapeake high school won their fourth County Loerue victory Wednes- day afternoon at Chesapeake when they downed the Bobcats of Black- fork hilh, 89 to 6. ln yesterday's same. Chesa- -peake kicked off. the Bobcats worklng the hall back to their 45 where the Panthers held for downs. On thelr first offenalve play. Dan Russell flipped a pass to Carroll Keefer who sprlnt- ed all the way for the touch- down. Russell then passed to end Charles Nichols for the ex- tra point. CHARLEY NICHOLS. CHESAPEAKE BATTLE T0 20-20 TIE Panthers Rally For Two Touchdowns In Second Hall To Deadlock .Score County League Race- Unchanqed After Contenders 'End In Draw ' HE CH-ESAPEAKE PANTHERS trailed the Coal Grove Hornets 20-6 early in the third quarter at Chesa- peake Friday- afternoon, but rallied in the third and final periods to Full into a 20-20 tie with the Hornets just a. minute be ore the 'game ended. The result of the game surprised no one, since it has been known for several weeks that those two teams were to be the top two in the County League, and they were about as evenly-matched astwo teams could be. Fx-iday's game at Chesapeake' was a case of the Hornets striking hard ln the early minutes of the game and staying ahead until i 40-yard pass tied the fray in the last minute. The Panthers were forced to stage an uphill battle all the way, but they came through gloriously and gave their sad- dened fans something to sceram about ln the latter stages of the game. The tle leaves the top rungs of the County League very much as they were before the game was played. The Hornets still lead with three wlns and their tie. which Chesapeake remains ln second place with two wins and the tle. Early ln the very first quarter, Coal Grove took the klokoff and trav- eled stralght down the fleld for a touchdown. In the second quarter, Carroll Keefer grabbed the ball. shot around left end and raced 60 yards for Chesapeake's first touch- down. Danny Russell's pass in- tended for John Hutchinson failed ln the conversion attempt. Coal Grove made it three TD's to one early ln the third quarter when Oscar Malone cllmaxed an 80-yard drive by pounding over from the eight yard llne. ' With the ball on the 'Hornet 40, Russell uncorked a heautlful pass to Nichols who snared t.he plll and raced that distance for the touchdown which made the score 20-19 in favor of Coal Grove. With everything dependlng on the powerful legs of Hungate. the Panther fullback, hulled into the line and added the tylilhi point. The work of Hutchinson' at end was outstandlna for the Panthers, while Joe Schneider. Fred Lewis.
