JOE FLYERS 31-0 Danny Russell ls Standuut Backls Panthers Triumph A big. rangy crew of Chesa- peake Panthers, sparked by the running and passing ,of Dan Rua- sell. took a. long stride toward e. defense of their county champion- shlp when they defeated a. scrappy bunch of St. Joe Flyers 31-0 last night at Beechwood stadium. A crowd estimated at 2500 watched the Panthers roll to five touchdowns and an extra point whlle limiting the Flyers to 65 yards on the ground. Chesapeake made good use of its superior speed and power on the offense and its heavier llne throttled all attempts of the Flyers to cross into pay dirt. The Flyers made but one ser- ious scoring threat. and that was stopped by the clock at -the and of the first half with the hall on the- two yard line. Following the Panthers' Xourth touchdown the Flyers seemed to catch fire and on the flrst play after the kickoff 'Pat Levine broke through tackle, out ball andt got all the way to the 20 yard line. The Flyers lost. the ball on downs here but the Panthers quick kicked to the 33 yard line. On the first play Levine a flat pass from Mike Madden, and on a beautiful, twisting run got down to the two yard line. Two line bucks failed to scorerand the hal! ended with the hall still on the two. The Panther offensive started rolling immediately alter the opening kick off. Russell flipped two passes, good for 20 yards, the Flyers braced but forced' the Panthers to kick. The Flyers could not gain and Sthtth inter- cepted B. long pass on the 26 and returned it to the Flyer 7. CHESAPEAKE BATTLE T0 20-20 TIE Panthers Rally For Two Touchdowns In Second Hall To Deadlock .Score County League Race- Unchanqed After Contenders 'End In Draw ' HE CH-ESAPEAKE PANTHERS trailed the Coal Grove Hornets 20-6 early in the third quarter at Chesa- peake Friday- afternoon, but rallied in the third and final periods to Full into a 20-20 tie with the Hornets just a. minute be ore the 'game ended. The result of the game surprised no one, since it has been known for several weeks that those two teams were to be the top two in the County League, and they were about as evenly-matched astwo teams could be. Fx-iday's game at Chesapeake' was a case of the Hornets striking hard ln the early minutes of the game and staying ahead until i 40-yard pass tied the fray in the last minute. The Panthers were forced to stage an uphill battle all the way, but they came through gloriously and gave their sad- dened fans something to sceram about ln the latter stages of the game. The tle leaves the top rungs of the County League very much as they were before the game was played. The Hornets still lead with three wlns and their tie. which Chesapeake remains ln second place with two wins and the tle.
