TORENSICS lil Q, Ai' Interest in forensics, which has been increasing each year, received renewed emphasis this year after Don Gray's winning first place in the Regional Forensic contest in l9h9. The local contest was held March 7th and 9th with 18 students participating. Joe Matta with Common Sense and Barbara Danek with All Americans, Butn were the winners in the oratorical declamations. In dramatic reading Max O'Rou1-ke with Joe Smith, American' and Phyllis Wills with Sorry, Wrong Numbern were chosen. The winning orators were Marion Burch with Family Foundations and Don Gray with Democratic Ideal. The District Contest with Elsie, Millington and Chesaning represented was held at Chesaning March 29 with Mr. Blue as chairman. Chesaning emerged with two first place winners and three seconds in the four contests. Barbara Danek and Don Gray, by thus winning first places,represented Chesaning at the Regional Contest at Otter Lake in April. On the evening of April 19 a fine feature was added to the speech program when Mrs. Laura Stewart inaugurated a Freshman Forensic Contest which was attended by the parents and public. After many weeks of hard practice, the seniors, under the direction of Mr. Ellis, proved their efforts were not in vain by presenting Oh, Promise Mel' on April llp. Applause, laughter and many comments indicated that this play was as good as any put on in the local school in recent years. The play was given before an audience of about Soo people. Between acts, Mr. Sharp and the String Ensemble presented several numbers. Jack Richards and Catherine Kettler did excellent work in the two lending parts. Principal contributors to the humor situations were Ida Jane Persons and Barbara Ruff who did their best to catch the millionaire playboy. Martha Greenwalt, mother of one of them, brought alongto help catch the boy friend made the scenes riotous. It took an active part in the Fall and Spring Festivals. On Friday, April 21, the Glee Club participated in the Central C Conference Choral Festival at St. Charles. The Varsity C Club, whose purpose it is to further athletics in Chesaning High School, is in its third year after being reorganized. The boys are raising money by selling pop and candy at basketball games. This is turned over to the athletic department for purchasing needed equipment.
