THE JUNIOR CLASS OP 1955 PRESENTS THE Ā 55 DIARY of CHERRY VALLEY CENTRAL SCHOOL CHERRY VALLEY, NEW YORK f9SS 2) i a Ji p To the Class of 1955Ā we offer this book as a momento of days that have passed. Soon, your dreams will be culminated when you become the Graduates, taking your place in the world. Some will continue as students in fields of higher educationāsome will be working, and still others will be service bound. We hope that, whatever your destiny may be, some evening in the not too distant future, you will pick up the '55 DIARY and, once again, if only for a brief moment, relive some of the happy memories thet you attained during your school days. The Class of 1956 wishes to de- dicate this yearbook to the memory of Harold Doolittle. We sincerely hope that those with whom he worked, and those whom he helped, will pause for a moment, as they read this page, and give thought to āDeweyāā who is gone, but not forgotten. ALMA MATER Where the hills' round Cherry Valley Meet the deep blue sky Nestled down among the valleys Stands our dear old high. Chorus: Cherry Valley High we'll sing Tell of deeds we've doneā Tell of victories, love and spirit. Bonds which make us one. Many, many are the classes Nurtured in thy halls, Alma Mater thou art mistress. Mother of them all. Principalā, M esia t AMERICAS' PROMISE Each and every student in the Cherry Valley Central School, along with every youth in America, is a combin- ation of possibilities. Your job is to discover your own worthwhile possibilities and to make them count for something for yourself and for those about you. What possibilities are worthwhile? How can you go about discovering and developing them? Your country says to each of you, I aim to offer every boy and girl in America a chance to be somebody. I cannot make you use your chance. That is up to you. In order to be somebody you must do worthwhile things. Success in life consists in making the MOST of what is in you. By your scholarship you can show that you have the ability to learn. By achievement in extracurricular activities, you can show that you have interests that will contribute to a well-rounded life. By your loyalty to the school you can demonstrate your willingness to cooperate for the best interests of yourself and others. The school cannot give you these abilities. It can give you the opportunity to develop them. How you use the opportunities of the school depends on you. It is my hope and the hope of the faculty that you will make full use of all that the school can offer. C. Deane Sinclair ROW I. Carlene Gillette CLASS HISTORY The Class of '55 started its career in Kindergarten with 9 members...George Burnside, Carlene Gillette, Bill Lane, Edith Leneker, Tommy McCarthy, Fred Thompson, Sally Willcox, Seth Yerdon and Willie Mizerak. They formed the beginning of our great Journeyāfrom grammar school to high school. We were Joined in first grade by Dick Haith, Carol Boyce and Ruth Hendricks. At this time, we mastered our ABC's with Miss Gilday. Our little troop continued its Journey through the second grade unchanged. However, in third grade, Elinor Gross made the superstitious take notice as she became number 13. Somehow, we survived the gruesome multiplication tables. Fourth grade proved to be a new and wonderful exper- ience to us. Evelyn Wilson and Harry Shaul came to our school and on we went to the fifth grade. This was the year Edith Leneker received the surprise of her lifeā Tommy dunked her long black pigtail in a bottle of ink. Laura Webster became our new ally to the worthy cause. With Mrs. Cole's help, the greatness of our country became vivid to us. Already, we were in the sixth grade, with one new faceāLeHand Mabie. We were happy to have Mrs. Briffett as our teacher, and at the end of the year, we decided our first six grades were all anyone could hope for. Could it be possible? We were in the seventh grade, with three new classmates. Ronnie Heyn, Fred Schmid and Ben Foster boosted our total to 20. My howwe grew up that yearāespecially learning to take care of ourselves. Grades eight through eleven seem like fleeting moments. During this time, we were deeply engrossed in several new subjects and in many money raising projects. Mr. Spurchise took over the helm in our Sophomore year, and has remained as our advisor since that time, guiding us on through to thisāour Senior year. And now we sre Seniors. Upon reminiscing, we realize that our journey thus far is but a beginning. Our thoughts turn now to the futureāour aims still high, and our goals new. With these new goals, we pledge to do our best to reflect credit to our parents and our Alma Mater. Carol Boyce ROW I. R. Loucks; P. Bressett; D. Yerdon; J. Snyder. ROW II. M. Eckler; J. Neal; G. Notable among these projects are the Minstrel Show, which was presented in February, the form- ation of a chapter of the National Honor Society in our school, and the compilation of a Handbook for the student body. The Council holds regular meetings every two weeks, with the President presiding. At these meetings, pro- blems which the student body may have are discussed. Once a month, a report is given to the Junior and Senior High school student body in the form of a group Student Govern- ment meeting. The Student Council is once again planning to sponsor an Athletic Dinner honoring our athletic teams. This affair was instituted last year by the Council, and it is hoped that it will be held annually. ROW I. M. Dana; L. Titus; C. Boyce; R. Heyn: C. Bowen; M. Eckler. ROW II. D. Leslie; P. Moore; P.
