WHAT IS HISTORY? History is the study of past civilizations and how they relate to one another, of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. It is the Dark Ages finding their way into the light of the Ren- aissance. History is the recognition of how the ideals con- ceived by past men are still at work today. WHAT IS HISTORY? History is the study of past conflicts and the growth of na- tions, of the American and French Revolutions, of the tur- moil that brewed change in South America and in the Russia of 1917, of tryanny in Europe that twice moved a world to war. It is the understanding of the flow of nations and how they developed into the modern world. WHAT IS HISTORY? History is the study of one's own heritage, of English nobles and Puritan exiles, of Thomas jefferson and independence declared, of Andrew jackson and the roots of capitalism. It is the binding of the nation at the close of Civil War and the founding of a democratic and industrial stronghold in the world.
