Here weaves the thread of time and man. Twenty eyes focused intently upon one mortal soul, one immortal message. Worlds of literature tied the first knot of today with the intricately webbed symbols of yesteryear. Brave knights in gallant pose and ladies with silken robes and sapphire orb were suddenly transformed to moral concepts playing to the human drama. We perceived and gained insight because they willed it. We learned for they shared a piece of their knowledge and the whole of their wisdom. Here entwines the cord of east and west. Twenty ears tapped the flow of fate, Greek god myth and Indian legend to spark the imagination. For the first time, Zeus bolted not only thunder and Phaethon scorched not only a fertile green earth. We had consummated a marriage of precepts taken for granted and ideologies newly discovered. We learned of others as we learned of ourselves because they understood our need for self- awareness. Here braids the knot of past and present. Twenty hearts felt the pulse of men's genius, a nation's folklore. Corn pipe tobacco and ferryboat legends stirred dreams of a nobler future. No longer did symbols stand merely as symbols. We learned to relate them to our ex- periences and thus forged a new identity. We grew be- cause they had once grown themselves. We created, for beauty and imagination grew from early shadows to crystal visions. Here ties the wreath of ends and beginnings. Twenty souls beat the wings of knowledge to grains of wisdom. Sonnets and men with weaknesses that turned to strengths assumed a simpler air. Beauty of form en- hanced beauty of character and soon we learned that the written word unioned with the spoken word made us one. We learned to question because they knew we would grow. We learned to strive for nobler vision be- cause they cared. We learned to laugh and shed an oc- casional tear because only then could pain and joy create the immortal word. 28 W...
