As sophs we had chosen the team with the golden touch and under the sign of the vulture we could afford to be upper-class. ANDROCLES AND THE LION carried class comps and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF ffinanced by profits from football concessionsj became the greatest stage success in the schooI's history. With enthusiasm that would not be drowned with the napkins, we built, rebuilt, and re-rebuilt a winning float. Regardless of the score, juniors were number one! The first prize spirit of '73 shone at the roller rink, the gym on sports nights, and the cafeteria at West's first square dance. Proudly we flashed class rings and got ready for our first prom. To be or not to be formal: that was the question answered by each class member. Tavistock was beautiful and though the theme was vague, the marvelous reality of Friends was weather- resistent. In the wake of that final tradition the year drew quickly to a close. With tears in our eyes we watched '72 depart and suddenly realized that at last we were SENIORS! f J. 2 V 5. f ' 1 - .f,.,e. -. ----'Na seniors 213

We moved easily into the role of the senior. For three years we had been working and planning and finally we were ready. No class had crammed more activities into one year, the last, the most precious year, had to be the best! Activities that had been successful before were re- peated: nostalgic trips, movie nights, and square dances. We were first again in class competitions and the controversial MAN OF LA MAN- CHA surpassed all expectations. Toward the end, activities became less frequent as each of us began preparing for the break-away, for next year and independence. It was not disinterest in the present but anticipation of the future that made class plans less important. At graduation we were one-in fear, sorrow, and disbelief. Those speakers couIdn't be referring to us, those Iaurels could not possibly be ours. Several days passed before we realized that we were finished. A last look down empty hallways and classrooms confirmed that nothing was left but memories, friendships, and a vague preparation for the future. seni r s ,vt. sw s A. seniors 215
