ilwwh Gs me MM. Y. V . .Y 4. W .. hh W Once upon a time there was a shiny new train with ten special section cars and a lead car named KAZ. It was their responsibility to deliver the 1973 RAMPANT to all the stu- dents waiting anxiously on the far side of the mountain. Straining with excitement, the little train tooted its whistle but the call only echoed and died in the empty station. There were no engineers to lead the train up the path and over the mountain. The section cars sputtered and coughed and the whole train started to shake. The moun- tain had suddenly grown huge and dark. How would they ever find their way alone? The section cars looked ex- pectantly to their leader. We can make it, he boomed, if we all pull together. And so, encouraged by the brave pioneer spirit of the KAZ car, the push cars began pushing as the pull cars began pulling, and they all began chanting as they started up the mountain- We think we can we think we can we think we can . . . The little train plugged steadily through the hot summer months and by September it had made remarkable prog- ress. If one of the section cars got caught on a stone, the other cars pulled harder until its wheels were spinning smoothly again. But one day the KAZ car blew the whistle and the train jolted to a halt. We can't go any further, he sighed. We need someone who knows the way or the poor students will never receive their RAMPANT. As the weary section cars wondered what to do they heard a rumble in the distance. Speeding towards them was a shiny new CHUCKwagon bringing three eager engi- neers. After surveying the plight of the sad little train, the three engineers pushed it quickly on to the right track. The art engineer helped to make the RAMPANT beautiful to look at, the literary engineer made it fun to read, and the boss engineer shoveled coal in the furnace and shouted encouragement. Everthing finally started to click together and the little train chugged full steam ahead to the first deadline with all cars singing-- We know we can we know we can we know we can . . . After the train reached the first deadline, it knew that the rest of the trip was mostly downhill. But the section cars did not slow down. Skillfully driven by the KAZ car and the CHUCKwagon Three it slid smoothly into the sta- tion right on schedule and delivered its cargo into the hands of the waiting students. As the section cars creaked contentedly out of the station, the KAZ car led them in a rousing chorus of- We knew we could we knew we could we knew we could . . . activities 169
