Mr. Charles Buchheim, Yearbook Advisor The staff of the 1973 Rampant is breaking tradition this year with a second dedi- cation honoring Mr. Chuck Buchheim. As a rookie staff without advisors, we were caught in a maze of publication jargon. Suddenly Mr. Buchheim appeared on the scene. Professing to have little experience, he nevertheless put the staff at ease with his calm approach and willingness to serve. He accepted the re- sponsibility for our mistakes, devoted more time than even the busiest one of us, played taxi service for those expected home by 10:30, and supplied enough hamburgers, donuts, popcorn and coffee to start his own take-out service! But the side of him we loved and appreciated most was the warm and open man who ate lunch in the publication's room, needed glasses only for special work, smoked a pipe, and got strangely giddy after 9:00. And in those late hours when the night turned to day, he was the only one who maintained some sort of sanity and appeared at 8:00 the next morning with the question When's the next deadline? Our greatest consolation as we finish this book is the knowledge that the next staff will be able to enjoy Chuck Buchheim. Dear Mr. losephs, The RAMPANT is dedicated to you. But we feel that it must be more than just a dedication, for when we pause and consider the past four years we realize that this book has always be- longed to you. The events which fill its pages would have been impossible without your constant support and faith in us. ln the beginning it was your closet that was full of candy and your car which served as delivery truck for doughnuts, bagels, and pickels. You arranged the final details for the trips to Valley Forge, Washington, and New York. You were first to the top of the Washington Monument and last on the bus at the close of the day after spending twenty tense minutes searching in the dark for lost students. You typified the ups and downs of sophomore year: thrown up in a blanket, falling down on the ice, or caught in the middle- of a hose squirting war at the car wash. At 4:30 in the morning you surveyed with despair the huge faded sneaker and the indiscernible purple and white banners, and then worked for twelve hours straight to raise those ban- ners and turn despair into triumph. You attended the square dances, the Hospitality Dance, and the lunior Prom and helped to make them a success. Remembering all these things and more, we say Thank You. It is because you have believed in us, praised our triumphs, and borne the burden of our mistakes that we have been able to achieve as a class. This yearbook is the final fruit of that achievement. Since the first sweltering September day in E-10 when, as bewil- dered freshmen, we gathered to establish a Constitution, the Spirit of '73 has thrived as no other in the history of West. That spirit of unity and perseverance, which you first fostered and led and then generously guided, has produced this book. The staff joins with the entire Class of '73 in presenting this year's RAMPANT to you. With love, Your Seniors
